Heard Boynton was selected for ASG at Fargo camp.
Any word on if he was selected for roster spot?

Glockner selected for ASG at Sioux Falls camp.
Boynton made 30 man roster. Should be with Fargo next year.
So he is no longer a top 5 goalie? Good to know. It helps the 1AA kids at Hastings, Owatonna, and Century. Who are completely disregarded.

There is a relatively strong group of goalies at a couple of age groups in MN, so it's highly competitive and everyone sees and evaluates them differently. I think you may be missing the point with Boynton, he was also passed over for many opportunities over the years (HP teams, HSEL, etc.) in spite of being a 4 year starter and playing nearly every game in his HS career (and statistically did very well), so many would see him as "completely disregarded" as well.

I wanted to move this post forward and see who are considered to be the top returning goaltenders for the upcoming season. Evaluating goalies is definitely not my forte, so I’ll start by listing the top ten returning starters by save percentage. I realize it’s an imperfect metric, but it is better than other stats and should at least get us in the ballpark to start the discussion.

Top ten by save %:
Tyler McCarville, Hastings (11) .944
Dominik Caspers, Marshall? TG? (12) .941
Noah Rupprecht, TRF (12) .939
Remington Keopple, Hill-Murray (12) .929
Hudson Hodges, Moorhead (12) .928
Ben Dardis, Mahtomedi (10) .923
Jack Wieneke, Maple Grove (11) .923
Logan Wright, Greenway (12) .922
Jake Turek, North Branch (12) .919
Matthew Syverson, Holy Angels (11) .915

Other notables:
William Tollefson, Rosemount (12) .914
Zach Foster, Warroad (12) .914
Tim Pundt; Rochester Century (12) .909
Louden Hogg, Edina (11) .907
Aksel Reid, Blake (11) .893
Carson Limesand, Benilde (11) .892
Carter Clafton, Grand Rapids (12) .886

Whom among this group (and I am sure I missed a few others) would you consider to be the most “legit” backstops? Keopple and Wieneke seem to be the most obvious inclusions, along with Hogg after the way he performed down the stretch for Edina. Is Rupprect truly that good, or partially a product of TRF’s stout defense? How about McCarville, who kind of popped up out of nowhere to help Hastings to an excellent season.

Also, is this crop of goaltenders weaker than the past few seasons? It seems like there is a lack of star power near the top. I am curious to hear the thoughts of those more knowledgeable about such things.

Along with Weyandt, I believe the other two who played in the HSEL last fall were Clafton and Pinney.

Good call, Westy. It’s hard to tell sometimes with goalies on lesser teams like Chanhassen. They see a lot of rubber and don’t always have the best support around them.

Stang - list looks pretty complete when you add Weyandt. I agree - lacks the real high end star power - but some good depth from top to bottom.

Three other adds to the list above:

Zach Weise (12) - Owatonna
Tyler Steffens (12) - WBL
Will Pinney (12) - St. Louis Park

Nothing set in stone yet I don’t think, but there’s a better chance Weyandt will be gone next year than there is he’s back with Chanhassen.

CEC is loaded with goaltending. I have a feeling players feelings are going to be hurt and the parents as well. The new coaching staff is going to have an excruciating job just with handling the goalies and their parents this year.

Pinney is trying to make Fairbanks (NAHL). Unsure of the actual chance as most USHL and NAHL camps and their all star games are money grabs. Those teams usually know their players and many locked in players don’t attend camps. Including goalies.

Interesting to see who makes the jump considering recent success of some who left early (NAHL) and as much success yet (WHL). Tier 1 kids are still up for debate as many are still 16/17.

I’ve seen some doozy goalie parents. One set resides in section 4 and who’s kid has a chance to be the starter. The teams pxp called out the dad on twitter when he was yelling at them regarding stats this past season during an actual game. Yikes.

Over the last 4 years - being a section 5 guy - my fave goalie parent interactions came out of Blaine, Osseo, Maple Grove, Champlin, and Centennial. All the dads were nothing, but classy and fun to talk to.

It would be interesting to know how many games they played, who they played, and how many shots they faced (especially if they were backups the year before or split time).

It would be interesting, but I think we can safely say that everyone listed above played a majority of their teams games (they were the starters) and with that they would have played the tougher part of the schedule for their team even if they were in a time-share of some type (so Stang already did a lot of the work here). The "tougher part of the schedule" is of course relative, for some of those teams they are playing most/all of the top 5-10 AA or A teams last year, while others on the list probably didn't have that opportunity.

Strong depth in this group, maybe not the star power with the senior class compared to last year. Also, a correction, Syverson at Holy Angels will be a junior, not a senior. OK to your question, not sure how legit is defined, but I would view it from the lens that a guy can control a game singlehandedly, are consistent and have a good opportunity to play at the next level (juniors or college). I like Caspers (12), Hogg (11), Keopple (12), Syverson (11) and Weyandt (12) a ton. Different styles and bodies, but all top end goalies IMO. Also, new guys who will impact next year include Kochendorfer (10) at Cretin and Dahlmeier (10) at LVS IMO. Erikson (10) at HM will be a great one once he gets the net to himself after Keopple graduates.

That is basically the criteria I used. I didn’t have a hard cutoff for minutes or games played, but I only listed goalies who played the majority of minutes for their teams last year. Foster played the least number of minutes at 646, but started every significant game down the stretch and in the playoffs for Warroad. Dardis appears to be next at 750. So there weren’t any small sample sizes among the ‘tenders listed.

Thanks for the excellent insights. That is essentially what I meant by “legit” (I couldn’t think of a better term). Any dummy like me can list a bunch of stats, but I don’t get to see enough games, particularly things like elite league, to have a sense of the goalies who transcend their stat lines. Also, I generally focus on Class A, where there are more mismatch games, and I have a blind spot regarding some of the AA goalies.

(Oh, and I corrected Syverson‘s grade in my list above, thanks.)

If I had to pick top 5 for this season based on what Ive seen in various venues last couple years, in no particular order , it would be Keopple, Weyandt, Hodges, Hogg, and Clafton if he is on his game. CEC Owen Carlson belongs somewhere in the top 10 Id say.

I get that Hogg is pretty good but everyone seems to be jumping on that bandwagon based on a small sample size. Granted it was the state tourney and in particular the championship game....but he was also very prone to giving up "soft" goals on a regular basis during the regular season.

Saw every game he played last year. Home and away. All playoffs. A couple of 'soft' goals? Yeah, there were, mostly in first 1/3 of the season though - as a 1st year starting goalie at EDINA facing a top 5 schedule. He didn't give up the soft goals that Mackay did...holy smokes not even close. What Hogg did do though? Was consistently improve week in and week out, month in and month out...flip side? With that team and that Dcorps in front of him how would one not get better? Flip again? Fantastic end of season, playoffs and state tourney not to mention single-handedly keeping Edina ALIVE in title game vs. EP. This summer? After U17 Dev camp in Amherst, NY? He is now on the TEAM USA U17 Selects squad heading to the Hlinka tourney, etc.

And he's only going to be a junior.
