It worked fine for the kids and only seemed to bother a few parents, likely the ones lobbying to get rid of the single class state tournaments.
AP, like your post and agree. Pretty trivial. tomatoes tomaatttos. GB

I think it's more about if you make the change to birth years then you will have players that will be in 9th grade (late birth year players) that will have run out of Bantam eligibility and who may not be developmentally ready for HS hockey as a freshman. There is a lot of change that goes on with young boys that age and there will be players who are not ready for HS hockey that will fall through the cracks. If they still have Bantam eligibility that gives them one more year of competitive hockey to mature and hopefully be ready for HS hockey their sophomore year. Not only will they be physically more mature but competition for spots won't be as a great as a class (seniors) has moved on and the incoming freshman will also still have Bantam eligibility, so they can hold back in Bantams for a year.

The July 1 cutoff helps those kids that are born later in the birthyear that have been shown to be left behind in the rest of the country in the book Outliers.

But does a July 1st cut-off help those same kids integrate into the rest of the country and life after MN Hockey?. Love the MN Community based model, but the age cut-off and pompous attitude of "our way is best" isn't going to help anyone develop. An older 9th grader who is not ready for high school has JV as an option. if they're not ready for JV, join a Rec League. Making the kids feel good dominating a level of hockey they shouldn't be at isn't the answer. Hard work and perseverance is!

Something to consider is how the cut off date affects high school numbers. I don’t believe adding more players to high school in this way is beneficial for development, participation, or winning.
Unlike sports like football, soccer, basketball, and baseball, there is not a ninth grade team in hockey. Any cut off date that increases the number of high school age players also increases the number of players cut.

Minnesota Hockey will not be voting on a calendar year.
That has no support at all.
This current vote is strictly to change from July 1 to June 1 based on various studies that suggests there are a significant number of players (or boys) that fall into this June category (900 or so if memory serves me).

900 or so kids. And how many registered players in MN, mites thru Bantams? What percentage of the membership are we changing rules for?

When is the vote happening? I have kid who is going to start Mite 1 this year and his bday is the dreaded June 30th.

I have no knowledge of the Minnesota Hockey birthdate data whatsoever......but a good solid guess would be about 8%......or 1 in 12...... :D :D

About 56000 to 58000 players registered in MN.
Of those about 34000 bantams and younger and 8000 on the girls side.
So 2. something percent.
