#5 DULUTH EAST VS. #4 ST. THOMAS ACADEMY
8:00 Thursday
-Two Tourney regulars collide in another excellent North vs. Metro battle. East leads the all-time series 3-1, including a 6-5, 2OT win in the 2015 quarterfinals.

Duluth East (18-6-2, #12, 2-seed in 7AA)
State appearances: 24 (2 in a row)
Championships: 3 (1960, 1995, 1998)
Key section wins: 4-1 over #21 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, 4-3 (OT) over #4 Andover
-The Greyhounds return to State after yet another stunner in the 7AA final. While this team is not as deep with star power as last season’s runners-up, they do have a few big guns, including slick-skating Mr. Hockey finalist Ryder Donovan (22), gritty defenseman F.H. Paine (20), and Ricky Lyle (15), who went on a tear through sections. Beyond that, they’re deep with respectable players at every position, and are probably the most physical team in the field. Logan Anderson (28) and Brendan Baker (37) play productive supporting roles, and Jacob Jeannette (19) is next in the line of East stars. With good play in back and continued steadiness out of Brody Rabold (39), they have a chance to go on a run.

St. Thomas Academy (24-3-1, #5, 1-seed in 3AA)
State appearances: 4 in AA (3 in a row); 8 in Class A
Championships: 5, all in Class A (2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013)
Key section win: 4-1 over #19 Eagan
-The Cadets enter the Tourney on an 18-game win streak and have allowed just 14 goals over that stretch, though the competition wasn’t always front-line. Offensively, Ryan O’Neill (12) had a breakout season, while Rob Christy (11) is the established star, and Brendan McFadden (21) is a wrecking ball. They have strong depth up front, with Luke Herzog (22) also in a tight group among their top point-getters, and Nico Vega (9), who led the way in the section final. The defense, led by Carter Henry (3), has held its own this season after being an issue in past Tourneys, and will be the most important piece of a potential run. There has been some uncertainly in goal, where Muzzy Donohue (1) replaced Wes Gervais (30) after one period on the section final.

STA 5
DE 2

STA under-rated. DE over-rated. Will be obvious from puck drop.

While I detest STA for my own personal reasons, I really, really am indifferent to DEast but to keep some people happy,
Go Hounds!

Duluth East wins this one in a close game. Will be 4-3 or 5-4 but in regulation. Tough draw for STA. East is playing very good hockey.

I think STA is going to win because they are more talented this year.

But you'll have a building full of people cheering for East. And East got hot at the right time. But they got a magic call in OT to even be here, so I can't see it happening again.

6-4 STA...

A part of me is pulling for East for a potential Edina/East matchup, where East has taken 4 of the last 5 tourney games since 2000. St. Thomas is flying under the radar, having not lost a game in 2019, and have a legit chance of winning the AA title. I'll take STA in this one, 4-3.

I find it really hard to trust sta this time of the year and east to the surprise of no one is playing their best hockey now. 4-2 east

I’m pulling for Ricky Lyle and his boys. That’s all I’ve got....

I just want an STAA win so the whole crowd will have no one to cheer for in the Hornets v. Cadets semi.

STAA: 4
East: 2

I kind of have a feeling how the first 3 quarterfinals are going to go....

I have no idea about this one. Only thing that would shock me is a complete boat race by one team.

Last year STA was absolutely awful in their opening game. I think they remember that, but can’t change anything. 5-1 hounds.

Randolph has the boys clicking at the right time, and I struggle to cheer for STA, so I'm going with East in this one, 4-2

East ducked Lakeville South, hard to pick a team that ducks a 1AA # 4 seed. 🤣

STAA: 4

Remember the 2014 final where at the start of the game nearly the whole crowd was behind Lakeville North but by the 3rd period had switched to a pro Edina crowd? The only time I can remember a state tournament crowd backing Edina.

The Hounds caught lightning in a bottle against Andover last Thursday night. No lightning tonight. Cadets 4-1.

No lightning in a bottle. The Mad Scientist has once again found the formula in his lab. No one should be surprised or caught off guard.

Except DE gets no ref bias at the big show like they do at Amsoil, so no Bueno for them.

Even Louie knows the days of the so called "neuteral site" game in Section 7 are numbered after this year's sh*t-show.

The advantage east will have will be the refs putting their whistles away in the tourney as they always do. Hardly any penalties called thus far. Advantage for the big physical team.

East wins. This team is built for this tourney.

The top 3 seeds have advanced. STA, you’re number 4, can you do it too? 😉https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0YIJQ1jgEI
