Regarding the value of HP 15, 16, 17, 18 and Seniors... many posters are correct that it’s unnecessarily expensive, a fundraiser, less important than family time, poorly timed in the spring, etc. However, it is also far from useless. The spring festival and final 54 are filled with NAHL and USHL scouts and D1 coaches. I know of multiple players who have had their breakout during this time, have been first noticed, or have done well enough to tip the scale from being “looked at” to approached and offered scholarships from D1 schools. Could these things have happened if they didn’t do HP? Sure, probably, maybe. When coaches and scouts attend high school season games, they are almost always watching a specific player, and not necessarily looking for the “next” player. Yes, they sometimes still catch their eye on a new one, but not often. Additionally, these things build on themselves. Success in HP very much helps chances of making Elite League, Model Camp (not as prestigious these days), NAHL and USHL team tryout camps, and for the 16s especially the USHL draft.

There are some very legitimate gripes about the selection process for teams depending on section, it’s overpriced, and as I said above, it is not so necessary that one needs to change their family vacation. It is possible though that those are true AND it can be very helpful for those who do participate.

Edina will definitely take a dip on older talent next year

Tonka Joe Brink still recovering from injury early last season , hopefully in good shape for next fall varsity
Minnetonka will be fine, agreed. The 17s have like 6 or 7 kids on the team. Plus, end of the day, HP teams are a nice spring barameter of upcoming talent, but is far from a full picture. Interesting and also not unsurprising nonetheless with Tonka if you’ve been paying attention to their youth teams coming up.
I don't know much beyond what I can find online - is that a good or bad sign for them? I saw the Bantam AA team was not highly rated, Jr Gold 16U "Blue" was 7th, Pewee AA was 4th...

Jr Gold at Minnetonka will always be good just based off of sheer numbers. None of those players will play high school though. Bantam AA wasn’t great and even last year though they made a nice playoff run wasn’t anything special (Newhouse, Kiffin, and younger Brink were good). Peewee AAs got better as year went on but really had one extremely good player. I guess the biggest theme I’ve noticed is a lack of the depth they had 3-5 years ago at youth. As always with Minnetonka though, they’ll be solid and a couple yearly move-ins will put them near the top.

They don't typically have that many move ins. Last year was a bit of an anomaly with 2 (Motzko and I think Kittleson. One other that transferred from HF already lived in the district and previously played for Tonka youth teams), the 2018 team had only Brink I believe.

Model camp is garbage since Potulny left imo.

I agree 15/16/17s is good for exposure IF you make it to 54s or St. Cloud (15s). The spring festival is less scouted. NCAAs are in full force as are the final weeks of the USHL / NAHL seasons. Some go though. My comment is more about 18s / Seniors - Ted Brill Great 8 is a huge fundraiser with little to gain. 4 games for $200/300 - yikes. You might get some exposure - it isn’t a good value.

Depends how you look at it. Next years junior and senior group had a decent chunk of move ins to their Bantam AA team two years ago. Add those to the chunk that moved into the high school team and it makes a difference.

Exactly. Newhouse, Lacomy, and Doctor did not grow up living in the district either. Before them it was K’andre Miller, a kid from orono, and a kid from Waconia. A couple every year adds up. They’re not the only ones obviously, happens everywhere. But for public schools they’ve certainly led the pack over the last decade.

For the record, this is not really Goldsworthy’s doing, nor was it necessarily the previous coach. The district as a whole recruits heavily from nearby communities, and a strong hockey program has helped it. Coaches certainly aren’t saying “no,” but they’re not actively “recruiting” either.

I haven’t personally been to Great 8 so I don’t know how many scouts there truly are, but I do know of players who have received calls from that event. I would guess it’s a nice opportunity for seniors to get looked at by an NAHL or Tier III team, and the 18 group actually looks pretty decent so I wouldn’t be shocked if a few NAHL scouts are there. Strange it’s the same weekend.

For 16s and 17s, you’re somewhat right. Being in-season has nothing to do with USHL or NAHL scouts coming to the events, and I know for a fact there are many at the festival weekend watching. The college coaches do really only come for the 54s though, you’re right on that.

They are many teams eliminated by then - so you’ll see the Motzkos out there in the spring fest. It’s a fun weekend of hockey. Hate the gate fee garbage. It’s not worthy of paying to get in unless you’re family or a scout imo. If it was free - I’d definitely stop by for a day of hockey. Yes I’m cheap ;)

I didn’t mean to discredit the G8 / Seniors / hp18. It’s just that many of the higher end players have joined the NAHL or their respective USHL team by now. But yes - 100% agree some kids will find opportunities within the NA3 or D3 or even a invite to a NAHL camp. That’s all they hope for.

612hockeytown--I was told by a god source that there is not gate fee this weekend. Feel free to stop by to watch some free hockey.

Thank you! I don’t mind paying for 54’s. The Spring festival is fun for a quick hockey fix, but not worth a gate fee imo. I’ll be there a day!

Curious, Stang, on your "shock" re: Section 6 HP roster? Can you be specific?
I'm assuming he's referencing the 14 of 20 kids being private school kids
Yes, partially that, which is weird to see, and partially because I think there are a lot of good players on that roster. Maybe it is a name recognition thing, but that roster stood out to me the most in my first pass through the lists (though I could certainly turn out to be wrong on the talent aspect).
Section 6 ended up romping through the tournament by scores of 6-3, 8-0, and 5-2, so I’d say my initial assessment was pretty much on point!

NIT teams. Some interesting omissions from the Great 8. No Andover players anywhere.

For NIT

I wouldn’t say huge misses or anything. Just interesting kids missing. Not as many as I thought. I forgot that the “higher end” junior and seniors tend to skip Ted Brill In favor of their junior teams.

I’d say either Huber or Fritsinger for goalies / but that’s just a toss up. Lots of goodies to choose from. Derek Roberts I thought played well. I don’t recognize the AV goalie, I was thinking Mayer from LVN was good. Aside from that - good for the kids that some haven’t heard of and getting a chance to shine! Turnover does happen year to year.

16/17s

Only 2/6 players of 17s from SSM made it to 54s.

Tanner Thompson CP - Drew Holt EP - Axel Begley HM - Cal Thomas MG

On a side note, lots of quiet bickering from parents about the Gentry kids being there (and therefore SSM). No dog in the fight here, but I was saying they play Tier 1 sanctioned by MN and USA hockey - so it’s a non issue imo. Anyone else really care?

Drew Holt for 17s and Trey Fechko for 16s are most notable omissions in my eyes, though as I’ve stated in other threads the Holt one doesn’t surprise me much (edgeless will disagree  )

As for SSM and Gentry, at least the tier 1 Gentry kids, I can understand the gripe. Especially for those who are competing for spots in their sections. Those players play a national schedule all year and are in front of plenty of scouts, and I’m sure USA Hockey would be able to pick from those teams who they want at the national camp much like they do with some others. Not a super strong feeling either way myself either, but I’m sympathetic to those who are upset.

Very nice group of goalies, several strong candidates at that age.

What should be done to recapture what this used to be (or at least improve it from the current state)?

With junior teams now scouting the upper end MNHS players more than ever, the need for these players to demonstrate their skills at that camp has reduced, which has allowed for "less skilled" players the opportunity to attend model camp.
