Just one or two private school players.

Also, is that the lowest number of Edina players on a U17 roster in recent memory? U16 for Section 2 has zero from Minnetonka as well.

Edina will definitely take a dip on older talent next year

Tonka Joe Brink still recovering from injury early last season , hopefully in good shape for next fall varsity

Looking at Section 1, Lakeville South has 6 kids on 16s roster and 5 on the 17s roster. Of those 11 kids, 5 are D, 5 are F and a goalie. Pretty balanced.

Minnetonka will be fine, agreed. The 17s have like 6 or 7 kids on the team. Plus, end of the day, HP teams are a nice spring barameter of upcoming talent, but is far from a full picture. Interesting and also not unsurprising nonetheless with Tonka if you’ve been paying attention to their youth teams coming up.

What can I say... I’m easily impressed by shiny objects, even if some of them happen to attend Blake  I am particularly high on the Benilde defensemen, which isn’t exactly a fresh take.

On a side note, props to tiny North Branch for placing three players on the two Section 5 teams. They have some nice young talent at the top end of that roster.

Remember how these are picked too... The NB coach is one of the coaches for 5AA team... Not saying kids aren't deserving, but always will be smaller schools represented, can't have the HP tryout money dry up if kids don't have hope of making it..

Wow... What was the idiotic part? Not a knock on NB, but a dose of reality on the process... No need to get the panties bunched.. having seen and been part if the process, it's true. It happens in each district/ section every year... Kids make it that are a suprise and others get missed... Some don't tryout. Are they mostly right? Probably pretty close...

Why so surprised? I guess you can't comprehend your own writing...
"They have to take a couple A kids"
"North Branch guy is the coach"
"But not saying"

If you're not saying it... why say it? Idiotic!!!

Come watch a game...

This is a process that could be improved upon. Way to many players on the ice at one time. Hard to get into the flow of the game when you go out for a shift, then wait on the bench for a long period of time. Timed a couple and was 9/10 minutes in between shifts. In addition, teams are not equal in size. As example, this past weekend one team had 7 D the other had 4/5 as one was moving back and forth between F and D. F's were not equal in numbers either. Is it really that hard for those in charge to move one player or two between teams and make adjustment with evaluators?

Player making section team that was missing due to Bantam VFW? My understanding is an evaluator was watching VFW to evaluate. Kind of comparing apples and oranges. Playing with your in season team vs pretty ugly hockey playing with players you may have never skated with before going out after long time on the bench.

Not sure why couldn't just form 4 teams and have a round robin. If that is to many and becomes watered down, then do a 54 at Section level (Three teams). Smaller bench size would help with flow of the game and would likely result in better evaluations. Of course this would require a little more effort and thought process to try and make the teams as equal as possible. Each team plays each team, thus evaluation against each team.

Limit number of goalies to 8, or 9 with three teams. Two on each team where each plays a half. Even more crazy with 9/10 goalies at same tryout. Yeah come in cold and do your best.

With the revenue that is generated, (lets just go with round numbers of 50 @ $100 = $5000) for 4 1/2 hours of ice, a jersey, one teenager on the ice and some evaluators it just seems to me the process could have a little more effort put forth by MH and it would be improved process. Yep, would need 6 hours of ice instead of 4 1/2 with 4 teams, but would also likely have more players to fill the 4 teams.

This is more of a knock on the process and how the teams get formed... don't confuse the process, this generates $$$ if kids quit going the money dries up. There are truly some great players at all levels.

I agree there should probably be some changes, at least some sections I'm aware of have 60ish skaters and 10 goalies trying out. I understand it's a revenue generating event for MN Hockey, but it seems they should be able to get this down to 40ish and 5ish to begin with so there can be some legitimate evaluation at the tryout.

In past experiences it seems like the biggest question marks are most often on D. When this occurs and you then watch the player who made the team in the festival and are too often left walking away like this

I think the whole process is intended to raise funds for the NDTP.
A few kids get a chance to go to the national camp out the program as well.
When you look at 17s, the very best are with their junior teams, or soon will be.
Spring HP is better than MN Hockey Fall Tier-1, but there are a lot of talented kids who pass on HP. It’s just not that big of deal.
Now getting a date for prom, that’s a big deal;)

Agreed that for 17's not as big of a deal as many already have college commits and have already had phase 1 of USHL draft completed the previous year. Like you said many are playing with those teams.
I do think 16's is important at the 54 level from the USHL draft perspective.
15's, St. Cloud is a great event and has good exposure and of course first opportunity to go to naty's.

Of course it is a MNH revenue generator that funds the progression of the process and MN/USA Hockey, part of my point without explicitly saying so. They collect the $, so at least provide a better product. The changes would not need to have a huge effect on revenue. There is plenty of revenue being collected.

Round number of 60 at each section 16's and 17's
Revenue = $96,000
Ice = 4.5 hours per level @ $200 an hour = $14,400
That leaves $81,600 for any other expenses (jersey's, Ref, Evaluators). What ever is left over is profit.

It is interesting that posters have many ideas regarding improvement and the amount of money that is netted from the process, BUT

your faces are never seen at a MN Hockey meeting.

You have been invited.

And will be again.

Those on the MH board and the others involved are open to suggestions - volunteering - and helping in any manner available.

I am short of telling you to shut up but do wish that you would be involved.

Agree , I think Tonka BAA has lost 20 +/- Games
each of last two years? Coincidentally about the same period that a great coach departed the system?

So what you are saying is unless someone goes to a MNH meeting, they shouldn't post opinions/thoughts for discussion on a blog?

Just because someone is not involved at the MNH level does not mean they are not involved, nor that they don't volunteer a lot of time. Just saying!

No, not criticizing or saying someone does not have the right to speak, but saying perhaps someone should gather data prior to speaking.
I am sure many on here if not all do a fair share of volunteering for hockey and perhaps other worthwhile causes..
I am saying that by the comments made it is obvious some do not know the exact process, the reasons for the process or the money that is generated and spent.
I am not speaking for myself as I do not serve on the Hockey OPs committee, but do listen to their reports=, their discussions and r=view the data supplied.
Also, I ma saying that if you have complaints you will be listened to and taken serious if you show up and let people know of your concern and if you want, become part of the process.

Go back and read your original post... Dig.. Dig.. Dig.. but I'm not saying it's the case here...

And then in another post you say that you've seen them play since mites... Then you obviously remember North Branch always being at the top... or towards the top against the big 5AA programs when they played against their BEST...

So you tried to discredit... but knew the truth on their talent level!

So it's an obvious case of a jealous dig.. that couldn't be said subliminally.. because of idiocy..

=D>
