2010s All-Decade Team and Awards

Post by karl(east) » Tue Dec 31, 2019 9:32 am

Figured this would be a fun way to round out the decade.

I posted an all-decade team on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/KarlEastHockey/stat ... 2749544448
And a Duluth East all-decade team (would be fun to see other teams): https://twitter.com/KarlEastHockey/stat ... 5156475905

Looking at the all-decade team, the Class of 2014 really was loaded...and I didn't even include that year's Mr. Hockey, who was Avery Peterson. Poehling might be the biggest reach, but I felt compelled to add a North player. For similar reasons (wanting a Tonka player) I went with Glockner in goal, though I was tempted by Alex Lyon out of Lake of the Woods.

Some other stray all-decade awards:

Best Tourneys
AA:
1. 2012: Top seeds all go down
2. 2011: Great semi and final
3. 2018: Best 3-team field for the semis and final

Class A:
1. 2017: The year of the upset in Class A
2. 2010: Most open field in the semis and final
3. 2011: A couple good quarterfinal upsets and a great final

Best State Finals
AA:
1. 2011: Kyle Rau in 3 OT would be a top 3 final of all time
2. 2019: Edina's thriller with an unsung hero in the snow
3. 2016: Best regulation final, the Wayzata D takes down Casey Mittelstadt

Class A:
1. 2013: Bruce Plante, meet Tommy Novak
2. 2015: East Grand makes it 6 in a row for Hermantown
3. 2011: More OT Hermantown heartbreak

Best Teams
AA:
1. 2014 Edina: my possibly controversial take, but they thrashed the same North team that went undefeated the next year
2. 2015 Lakeville North: undefeated
3. 2018 Minnetonka

Class A:
1. 2013 St. Thomas Academy: arguably he best team in either class
2. 2016 Hermantown: the curse finally breaks; also could've won AA
3. 2014 East Grand Forks: see above

Best Teams of Destiny
AA:
1. 2017 Grand Rapids
2. 2012 Benilde: less of a shocker, but great storylines with Besse and Jablonski
3. 2015 Duluth East: didn't win it, but the run to get there was one for the ages

Class A:
1. 2019 Greenway: everything about why State hockey is special in a nutshell
2. 2017 MAML: Moose.
3. 2015 East Grand Forks: probably the only state final upset of any magnitude in Class A of the decade

Best lines:
1. Hain-Adams-McLaughlin, Grand Rapids
2. Poehling-Poehling-Poehling, Lakeville North
3. Moore-Labosky-Besse, Benilde-St. Margaret's

Class A:
1. Tweten-Bowen-Loven, East Grand Forks
2. Smith-Warner-Perbix, St. Cloud Cathedral
3. Troumbly-Lawson-Gernander, Greenway
(Class A picks here may suffer from my lack of attention to Class A early in the decade)

Best D pairs:
1. Luedtke-Docter, Minnetonka
2. Beaulieu-Moore, Duluth East
3. Any of Edina's D, 2018

(Someone really needs to help me on a Class A list)

Best goals:
1. Rau dive
2. Noah Cates spin-o-rama
3. Donte Lawson, Greenway over Hermantown

Biggest State upsets
AA
1. Duluth East over Edina, 2015 - biggest one ranking-wise
2. Lakeville South over Duluth East, 2012 - biggest one reputation-wise
3. Duluth East over St. Thomas Academy, 2015

A
1. MAML over Delano, 2017
2. Alexandria over Hermantown, 2018
2. East Grand Forks over Hermantown, 2015

Biggest section upsets
AA:
1. Wayzata over Edina, 2017
2. White Bear over Hill, 2011
3. Farmington over Lakeville North, 2016

I resisted the urge to pick yet another East 2015 upset here, but their win over Elk River was on par with these, ranking-wise. This is also doing this in terms of significance; we could do another list about things like Armstrong over Eden Prairie in 2012.

A:
1. Greenway over Hermantown, 2019
2. New Ulm over Luverne, 2015
3. Orono over Breck, 2014

Broader storylines:
1. The status of certain teams in Class A (St. Thomas in the first half of the decade; Hermantown in the second)
2. Early departure numbers stabilize, but transfers seem to increase in number and magnitude
3. Change in penalty rules and overall style of play following the Jablonski injury

Team of the Decade
AA
1: Edina: 4 titles, 8 Tourneys, the no-doubt winner
2. Eden Prairie: 1 title, 3 finals, 6 Tourneys
3. Duluth East: 8 Tourneys, 3 finals; most consistent after Edina, but couldn't win it all
4. Lakeville North: 1 title, 2 finals, 6 Tourneys
5. Hill-Murray: 6 Tourneys, 2 finals
6. Minnetonka: 1 title, 2 finals in 2 Tourneys

Class A:
1. St. Thomas Academy: won the most titles despite only being there for 4 years. 3 titles, 3 Tourneys
2. Hermantown: Most dominant start to finish but seems fitting they should be 2nd. 2 titles, 9 Tourneys
3. East Grand Forks: 2 titles, 5 Tourneys
4. Breck: 1 title, 2 finals, 6 Tourneys
5. St. Cloud Cathedral: 1 title, 4 Tourneys
6. Orono: 1 title, 2 Tourneys

Other takes and categories welcome!

Exceptional work Karl!!

Not to slight big Al Adams but wouldn't the 2017 line of MacGlauphlin-Hain-Miller have garnered more state wide interest?
If I recall correct they seemed to have received more state wide appeal. What does the hive think?

Best lines-Class A
Koepke-Jacques-Sandelin: Unstoppable in HS, all three now play for top D1 programs.
Johnson-DeCenzo-Anderson: Carried a young, not deep team to within a whisker of the A title game. Johnson has played in the NHL this season, DeCenzo played D1, and Anderson played D3. They put up ridiculous points vs a tough schedule.

Best D Pair-Class A
Aamodt-Gotz: Ironically, neither of these two were the best defenseman on the team (Samberg, who was injured most of that season, I believe.)
Perunovich-Erwin: Erwin wasn't the most skilled, but he was big and physical, allowing sophomore Perunovich to concentrate on offense, very similar to how Wolff and Perunovich complement each other for UMD. Too bad Erwin moved after that season, and even worse that Gotz didn't stick around, as Gotz-Perunovich had the potential to be the best of the decade, in either class.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. Their various lines were blurring in my memory. Definitely the line of the decade.

Knew there had to be an elite D pair from Hermantown, just wasn't remembering who was paired with who. EGF probably has one from a couple years before also out of the combination of Eades/Poolman/Brierley/Ausmus also.

Class A section upsets

They didn't make the state tourney, but Little Falls over St. Cloud Apollo in 2016 was a big one. I think Apollo was #1 or #2 at the time.

Nice!

So many memories!

Agree on 2012 best state Trny with 4 upsets first round . Aside from the star names and stories , there was a lesser known low key kid with unsure future 😀by the name of Jake Guentzel in that Trny for the Pios

And agree on 2017 Rapid team of destiny. Specially with all the drama that year and 2016. Still smile several times a year when I think about that semi, and championship game with the spuds . Doesn’t get any better . ( Tonka might be runner up for destiny champion, with back to back BAA titles )

Wyatt Aamodt , yes!

Fastest skater of decade: Walker? Randklev?

Additional Broader story lines: Twitter coverage led by Doug H, Tony and many others . And livestream led by Zach and Chad

None of those three were actually Hermantown kids though, so maybe they got docked for that? I’m not sure what the criteria was. Aamodt and Samberg both open enrolled, neither one of them have ever lived in the Hermantown School District. Gotz obviously moved in late for Hockey. I don’t know if that’s part of the criteria but that might explain the omission.

Great post!

I could see a category like best individual performance, or break out performance - Just so I could slide Jack Powell of Alexandria in the Class A slot. His game against Hermantown in 2018 was jaw dropping.

Even better one Mite-dad is when Apollo #9 seed went into Little Falls #1 Seed Top 10 Class A team and pulled off the only known 9 seed to ever win a Section game in High School Hockey over 1 Seed in MN. Much greater uspet then the 2016 thing above.

2010-11 Section 6A Playoffs
#1 Seed & Top 10 State Ranked Little Falls (20-3-2) lost at home to #9 Seed St Cloud Apollo (8-18-1) (Only time ever a 9 seed over 1 seed)

Got to be the Greatest Upset of Section in the Decade.

I would also mention Perbix and Maas from 2017 Elks as top D pair , Both playing D1 and NHL draft picks

A very impressive pair indeed, especially when you consider...that neither were selected for the HP 15 (year old) District 10 team☝️Of course, a certain player from EP didn’t make the District 6 team that very same year & ended up being the 8th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

I'm in that camp too. I brought it up at dinner last night and was alone in my opinion. Others are all okay with the first decade only having 9 years. I don't think that's a decade.

lol I see this argument but when people are saying the decade is over they are saying the 2010s are over. Not that the 202nd decade ever is over.

9 years? What you talk in’ about Willis?

Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 31, 2009 = 10 years
Jan 1, 2010 to Dec 31, 2019 = 10 years

We are now in the 21st year of the 21st century.

No, Blue. If you start counting from 1 A.D. you have another year to go.

For example, the first 1000 years (millennium) is 1 A.D. through 1000, not 1-999.

You can't call Jan 2000-Dec 2009 a decade unless your first decade had 9 years.

Separate discussion that came up at dinner is that 1 B.C. to 1 A.D. is an arbitrary starting point anyway.
Be kind. Rewind.

In 2016 Farmington had beaten North twice during the regular season, they may have shut them out twice as well. This was a bad match up for North and there weren’t a whole of people who didn’t see Farmington winning that game.

I would put Luverne in as a team of the decade, they never won a title, or even a quarterfinal game but they came out of nowhere and from hockey nowhere to become not only relevant but a fan favorite. The day they took Hermantown to overtime alone should get the mention ....if it wasn’t for Luverne we wouldn’t have a yearly 3A thread and rollcardsroll wouldn’t exist.

Fun post to read.

One addition to D pairings for AA: Maybe not results wise, but I particularly enjoyed Eagan 2014 when Wolff & Muck literally only left the ice when they chose to get a quick blow. They never left the ice. And they did the best job of slowing down the 2014 Edina team, only allowing 3 goals, 1 of them being an empty netter.

I also enjoyed Jack Powell of Alexandria in 2018.

I disagree with the 2012 tournament. I suppose that's just difference of opinion in criteria to judge. I judge great tournaments on Friday night & Saturday night above Thursday. It's great to have great quarterfinals, but Friday afternoon & night is the jury for me.

My sentimental favorite still is the 2010 tournament for the Friday day/night combo of the Hermantown-Mahtomedi & Minnetonka-Hill Murray games.

As I said before, fun read.

My memorable moments:
Class A:
Certainly the Hermantown/STA WARS from the early part of the decade.
Heart break for the Hawks multiple times (OT game in 2011 and the Novak game in 2013).
The misery continued even after STA left Class A: Hawks rally with 2 late goals against EGF in 2015 only to lose in OT.
They finally break thru in 2016 with a team that DOMINATED and probably could have won the AA side.
Then the cinderella Monticello Moose in 2017 (GREAT sweaters and GREAT fans) pushed the Hawks to the limit in 17
Resurgance of Greenway: program almost died. HUGE upset of Hermantown last year and finished 2nd in state
After A LOT of dominance from the same schools (Breck, Hermantown, STA, and EGF), the decade ends with two first time champions in Orono and St. Cloud Cathedral.
Could Mahtomedi be next? They have been the past decade's bridesmaid.

Class AA:
2010: EPIC 4OT Hill-Murray/Tonka game in 10. Skippers pull it out but fall in championship
2011: maybe the best championship of all time as Rau scores on an all time effort dive in 3rd OT
2012: do you believe in destiny? Benilde's wins it all after Jablonski injury. Grant Besse: FIVE goals in championship
13 and 14: Edina dominates. 14 team was hardly challenged
15: Poehling's dominate: end Duluth East's miraculous run
16: Wayzata wins 1st title with rally against Middlestadt's EP team
17: The HALLOWEEN MACHINE returns to the top! (and another 2nd place finish for the Moorhead Spuds)
18: epic East/Edina matchup goes Randolph's way again but they fall a great Tonka team: Skippers first title
19: EP wins 3OT thriller against Lakeville South in the Quarters: but lose another battle and the title to Edina
