Could a Class A team win it all this year if we still had single class tourney?

Post by SpreadOut! » Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:04 pm

With all the upsets so far, I’m thinking 100% yes.

Absolutely. SCC and Hermantown could both compete for a title this year if there was a single class.

This question gets asked every year.
If so, these teams should move up and prove it. :?
What is a Green Wave anyway?

Yea, I have wanted them to move up, but I doubt if they ever will.

I really like the Greenwave This year!

Everyone hypes Warroad, Hermantown and SCC but I think in the end it will be the Greenwave on Top!

Yes!

Stang could update the previous list from a month or two ago, but I think there probably would be 16 D1 commits from the A class this year, counting those that are expected commits but not yet announced

I think it is possible, but unlikely. Most would likely not be favorites within their own sections.

In 7AA--Andover over Hermantown
In 8AA--Moorhead over EGF or Warroad
In 6AA--The Wayzata/Blake/Edina gauntlet for SCC.

This is a good take. I think the top six Class A teams are capable of knocking off any AA team in a single game. But putting together an extended playoff run is much more difficult. Still, if there was a year where a Class A team could pull off a state title run, this is one of the better seasons in recent memory.

I agree. While I would have Moorhead as the 1 Seed in section 8, SCC, EGF, and Warroad, along with opt-up Roseau could all be in the section finals.

Thought question just assumed they were already hypothetically at the AA Trny

We will find out if SCC could beat three straight
hypothetical AA State Trny teams, they beat Andover , and MH and Wayzata are coming up on their schedule later

Seems plausible to me

Or combination of Blaine , WBL , Lakevilles ? Plausible also .

They’d probably need some help by somebody upsetting EP, if everyone was available .

Impressive what Crusaders have achieved without Smith

Agree with all A teams people have mentioned. I think multiple A teams would at least compete for shot at state from their sections. Heck, Mahtomedi just beat HM last week, and Tartan beat Mahtomedi. WBL would be favorite in that section but multiple upsets, and current A team emerging from it, would be very possible. Same in other sections, with 7 and 8 most likely.

Beating 3 AA teams is good.

However, assuming a decent section, winning 6 straight games vs AA teams, with 3 consecutive days at State is a whole new level.

I agree with Blue. Depth would be the obstacle for an A team. And winning 6 straight vs deeper AA teams would be a grind and a tall order. One game? Sure. 6 that are progressively more difficult? Very different conversation. To me SCC is the only team that belongs in this discussion. Take a closer look at their AA games..........and don’t overthink the Andover game.

Fun conversation. But not sure it’s as simple as some want to make it.

I enjoy watching class A teams in the State tournament. My favorite memory from 2018 was watching Alex take down Hermantown in the semi-finals. And in 2019 it was Greenway's run from sections to the championship game. I would hate to lose the class A tournament on the hopes of getting a class A team in a single class state tournament a couple times every decade.

Very unlikely. I just watched St Cloud Cathedral (#1 or #2 in Class A) play Moorhead, a top team in Class AA. While certainly holding their own, Moorhead was clearly the better team over 3 periods and came away with the victory on the road.

Now could SCC win a potential rematch in a hypothetical section championship game against Moorhead? of course. With a couple breaks their way, the gap wasn't so great that they couldnt pull one out. But then they would have to go to state and beat three more teams that are as good or better than they are. It just would be a tall order.
