Proposal for Three Class System
Sources inside the MSHSL office have confirmed that it recently received a proposal to move to a three class system in Boys Ice Hockey. The idea would be to "give more opportunities to the little programs".
And who is the "little program" that is spearheading this effort? Well it is Hermantown and their long time coach Bruce Plante, who retired two seasons ago after the Hawks last championship in 2017. Asked for his reasoning behind the proposal "well just look at the past two seasons: I mean how are we supposed to complete with the Alexandria's and Greenway's of the world? You saw what kind of talent they had. It's not fair really to ask us to compete at that kind of level. We feel it would be best if there was more classes so those programs could then be moved up a level."
Plante says he just the voice for the community, as the real push for this change is coming from the parents in the Hermantown area. Said one parent: "I schedule vacation days for the first week of March every year so I can go watch the team play in St Paul. And then they lose in the sectionals last year. What was I supposed to do? It was too late to switch my vacation days at that point."
Said another parent: "ever since my kid transferred here in 7th grade, it's been his dream of going to state as a Hawk. What if we don't make it out of the section tournament again? That wouldn't be right."
A third added: "two years without a state championship......the MSHSL has to do something. It's only right"
Plante finished by saying "we recruit......errrrrrrr I mean bring in kids from all over the area. So when we win state, its like the whole Northeast part of Minnesota wins state too."
The proposed alignment would have Hermantown as the only team in it's section.
No word from the MSHSL on if or when this proposal will come up for a vote.

Love the satire! Fear the day is not to far off, where the MSHSL will put a third-tier in place.

Doesn’t look to bad but might have to do some juggling around with Eveleth/Virginia now combined.
Where would all this be held, if it ever got to this?

Re: Proposal for Three Class System
Here is my version of how a potential three class state tournament would work: I just picked Mariucci and Ridder Arena just to lay out the plan. Not sure the logistics of using both those sites at the same time would work or not. So if you are more familair with Twin Cities rinks, by all means give me a better idea:
Wednesday:
Class A at Ridder
Class AA at Mariucci
Class AAA at Xcel
The Class AAA quarterfinals would be broadcast on 45 with Prep-spotlight TV picking up the other classes.
Thursday:
Class A Consolation Games at Ridder
Class AA Consolation Games at Mariucci
Class A semifinals at Xcel (morning)
Class AA semifinals at Xcel (evening)
Friday:
Class A Consolation and Third Place at Ridder
Class AA Consolation and Third Place at Mariucci
Class AAA Colsolation at Xcel (morning)
Class AAA Semifinals at Xcel (evening)
Saturday:
Class AAA Consolation and Third Place at Mariucci
Class A and Class AA Championship at Xcel (morning)
Class AAA Championship at Xcel (evening)
Now I can already hear the purists complaining about going away from the traditional "three games in three days format"; but I think the extra day off would be for the better as some years we have seen teams that just dont have their legs for the championship. This would alleviate that.
Also, you wouldnt be able to broadcast all the quarterfinals on 45. However, this was the best I could do with still using a Wednesday start date. You could start playing on Tuesday of course but that seems too far spread out.
What do you think?

Re: Proposal for Three Class System
I’d think the AAA quarters being on Wednesday would be a non starter. Just being honest.
Re: Proposal for Three Class System
I am kind of torn about games being played on Olympic ice.... I suppose that is just me.
Also, will we see a lawsuit filed by parents of the A and AA schools over "equal access", just as we did with Girls Hockey when they were not playing at the Xcel Center?

Re: Proposal for Three Class System
Jeez didnt think of that: but not sure how you squeeze them all into Xcel unless you start on Tuesday. A on Tues, AA Wed, AAA on Thur. But squeezing 6 semi-finals into Friday would be near impossible.BSUBeaver wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 8:18 am I am kind of torn about games being played on Olympic ice.... I suppose that is just me.
