State Tournament Times

Post by stateofhawkey » Wed Mar 04, 2020 1:06 pm

Maybe this has been talked about before, and I just haven't seen it. But, I'm still curious. Does anyone know why they still set the times of games as 11, 1, 6, and 8? What I'm getting at is the 1 o clock and 8 o clock games NEVER actually start at those times. The SCC/East game is going to be running time and it won't be done by then. Toss warmups for the second game in there and it probably won't start until 2/2:30. I've seen afternoon games that nearly run right up to the 6 o clock start time for the second session. Why don't they just do 11 and 2 and 5 and 8 and actually stick to the times? Or something similar? I've never understood why they stick to listed times that don't hold up.

Excellent question, I have seen others questioning that/laughing at it. Doesn't make much sense

I’d say that reflects how poorly the league is run. Every other league starts on time. You’d think with tv they would have to do all they can but usually the 11 and 6 games don’t even start on time.

Hence when I make my own brackets, I use more realistic start times

Because the High School League wants to run two sessions to get some extra money into the coffers by selling two sets of tickets. Starting the second session at 6 gives them time to clear the arena.

Even starting the second game at 2:00, baring overtimes, they should be done 4 or 4:30ish, giving them enough time to clear the arena.

Pretty sure the 11 and 6 games are at 11:16 and 6:16. The games following these games start 30 minutes after the conclusion. Been that way for quite some time.

You are missing the point: yes, do to having two games in a session, you are never 100% sure when the second game will start. The point is why dont they list a more realistic time for the second game in each session? The second game of the morning session is NEVER going to start by 1 pm. So why list that? 1:30, 1:45 or 2:00 would all be more realistic.

I guess I fail to see what the big deal is? If the first games goes three or four overtimes, that is going to push the second game back even if it is listed at 2:00.

If I am going as a casual fan and I have a session one ticket, I am sticking around for both games, whether it is listed as a 1:00 game or a 2:00 game. If I am going as a fan of a team that is playing in the second game of a session, I am going to get there at least a half hour before the game. By listing it as 1:00, that type of fan is pretty much guaranteed of being in the arena before the puck drops.

I was thinking the same thing BSU. If this is a notable enough problem on the problems list that it’s worthy of its own thread........I’d say were in pretty dang good shape.

Is it that big a deal? Not really I guess.............but on the other hand, it would be something that would be such an easy fix, so why not do it?

I know all the die-hards on here that watch every year know those start times will be off: its just second nature to us. But that might not be the case for everyone: Im sure some people are only attending/watching because they have a family member in the tourney this year.

Lets say you see a 1:00pm start time so you tell your boss you would like to off at 1 so you can get home and watch your kid/grandkid/nephew/friend play. Well you rush home only to see that the first game still has 10 minutes left plus a 30 minute break between games. Well it was listed as a 2pm start instead, thats an extra hour that person could have worked.

If this is your angle, why are you lobbying against it? Unless you’re the boss and got WestMetro and ChrisK sneaking out early...

Im saying maybe the person could have had that extra money from that extra hour instead of thinking the game started at 1

In the old days games were played an hour later. They moved them up because sometimes the late game Thursday and Friday would not start till sometimes after 10:00. Don't forget at one time even played a Championship Round Game in afternoon and night on Friday. With the move to two classes Friday Night became the hot ticket with both semi- finals Friday Night.

Hell, I'd be telling my boss the kid's game was at 11. I'd rather watch hockey than work, what can I say?

Maybe that PERSON should just stay at work the whole day then since they can't afford to lose that EXTRA money!

Most hockey fans that don't live under a rock are aware of the actual start times. Starting with the first game of each session starting about 20min after posted times.

Yeah probably: but it would be such an easy fix/change. Not sure why so many of you are against listing more realistic start times.

I’m with ya Joe. Can’t understand why people don’t like order like how the rest of the world is on time. Not sure if basketball tourney is on time but if it’s not I’d be mad if I had to wait through another game when I could be making money

With no commercials and just starting lineups my section runs semifinal games 2.5 hours apart and runs on time. How the MSHSL figures they can go every 2 hours is beyond me.

Its 8:27 so I assume Moorhead/Hill-Murray are about one period into their game by now right?

I assume you know it doesn't start on time by looking at your very own spreadsheet you posted earlier?

It's a pretty well known fact that the MSHSL loses money on the sections/state tournaments. So you can't really blame them for wanting to maximize profits (in this instance).

I sat in a seat yesterday that has a $19 face value. For a wild game, the ticket is probably 150+. For 18,000 seats your talking about 350k for tickets. A wild game I would bet the ticket revenue easily exceeds 2M. The X isn't cheap to rent/staff.

If you think the boys hockey tournament loses money, you're probably a fan of a team that's never gone beyond the quarter finals. Unlike Stillwater.

I should clarify. I didn't say they lost money on the boys hockey tournament. I said they lose money on section/state tournaments (meaning all sports). As a non profit, the MSHSL can't operate in the long term at a deficit. So they are looking at every angle to cut costs/maximize profit. You can look at their annual reports and see why they are trying to maximize all profits from the hockey tournament.

I'm also not saying they are doing a great job or managing everything correctly, just that I don't blame them for trying to maximize profits from men's hockey, football, and men's basketball.
