I was there fir both semis that night

Great to watch the highlights again . Almost 25 years ago but many of those players especially Spe and Westr had speed and skill that carries forward to the present players era

I don’t know how Apple Valley had enough gas left in the tank to win it all only 18 Hours later .

Looks like it hit the cross-bar...............were there more angles than those we saw in the clips above?

I think that was the only angle they provided. It looked in to me based on the time it took to break back away from the net. I really have no feelings one way or the other. It just looked in to me. I remember being a bit more emphatic about it back in '96.

yeah: thats obviously not the full broadcast: just clips edited together. Perhaps there was another angle that was shown later that people remember?

i also just watched these highlights. I remember forcing myself to stay awake for this.
No doubt in my mind that puck was up & in behind the cross bar before coming back out. Don't know what the ref saw there. Tough break for Duluth East.

Looks to be a goal even in this video the puck goes below cross bar, delays (hits rear bar) then shoots back out

Surprised goal judge didn’t flip the switch

I have seen a picture or freeze-frame somewhere that clearly shows the puck in the net. Not sure where to find it--maybe in a newspaper archive?--but it exists.

Best tourney game I’ve ever watched. Both teams gave everything they had for 8 periods! Amazing that AV had any gas in the tank on Saturday, and even more impressive that they were able to win Saturday!

Only game that comes close in my mind is the 2011 title game between EP and DE. Unfortunate for DE fans, they ended up on the losing end of both games - but on the other side, at least they were good enough to get there.

It also was fun because it was the upstart program who's best player had his dad as coach, which happens around the state from time to time and those teams reach new heights, against a power at the time that was taking the reigns from Jefferson as the team to beat. Spehar was already a legend. And one has to ask themselves, will Apple Valley ever be back to win another title? They had some good teams in the 80's too (I seem to recall), but not much since. I suppose I may have upset some AV fans, so please correct me.

We know Duluth East kept sending contenders down to St. Paul for the next 25 years and I'm sure will continue.

It is kind of a head scratcher to me that Apple Valley hasn’t had a good team in some time with how big the community is and the higher income area

I worked in the sports department at the Duluth News Tribune from 1992-97. A few days after the Apple Valley game, Kevin Pates, the boys high school hockey beat writer, was given a photograph of the puck hitting the upper part of the net inside the cross bar. Kevin showed it to all of us. Pates wanted to run the photo, but Joe Bissen, sports editor of the DNT at the time wanted to first check with Mike Randolph on what he thought about the paper running the photo. Randolph told Bissen that he, Randolph, knew it was a goal, but didn't want the already burgeoning status of the game tarnished or questioned. Bissen decided not to run the photo and Pates agreed.

A Duluth station has the original news report from 1996 on its website. It includes video shot by the station, which is a little different angle from the TV broadcast:

-I think the creation of Eastview didn't help anything, so whatever talent was there was now split into two.
-I guess I've never really considered Apple Valley as a higher income area. You can correct me if I'm wrong though as I wouldn't declare myself an expert at all if it's the case or not. I see it pretty similar to Burnsville, but Burnsville seems to have had a lot more success in terms of churning out a team occasionally. B'Ville's problem was they were in the same section with Edina from '08-'15

That senior class of AV in '96 had a lot of success, from Squirts all the way up to HS. But overall, you are right in that you'd think they'd have a team here & there make a little noise. Other than 2010, they seem to definitely be behind B'Ville & Eagan.

As we all know - hockey is an economic sport. The Eastview side of AV has the newer, bigger homes (for the most part)- much like East Ridge. Also - the current junior class was very good - but a handful of their top players went to at least 3-4 different schools (LVS South, STA, Holy Angels, etc). Numbers are down the past few years and have combined with B'ville for some of their youth teams.
