Re: Ideal state tournament
I like this. A lot! Make it so.
Re: Ideal state tournament
As of next year, this scenario will only be one team short of being a possibility.
Re: Ideal state tournament
This is a similar idea to the Massachusetts Super Eight, except they have best-of-three quarterfinals. It’s a fun tournament, especially now that public schools are finally competitive there.
Re: Ideal state tournament
This makes way to much sense to ever actually happen.

Re: Ideal state tournament
We had the ideal tournament, until 1991. It was fab-u-lous. Then we killed the Golden Goose.
All of these cockamamie schemes are merely an attempt to recreate what we once had but still accommodate those who whine about being fair, not to small schools, but to small schools that have just above average teams. There are plenty of small schools that still don't have a prayer of making even the class A field. (And some people want a 3rd tournament for them!)
One of the upsides of the one class tournament that is rarely discussed was that it made it easy for casual fans, the people who don't necessarily check the scores every morning, to follow the tournament. It was only 3 days, not 4, and there were always a couple teams you knew would likely lose in the quarters, so you didn't much bother with them. You kept your eye on 2 or 3 favorites, and a couple teams that might make a nice run.
With 16 teams, 4 days and more games, its just more to keep track of. The media devotes the same resources to covering more teams, so teams get less coverage. With the demise of local newspapers (they even published a Saturday afternoon edition!), there are actually fewer media resources available.
So that's the way it is. If you don't believe me, just ask me and I'll tell you.

Class AB would have to be at the X, or someone’s parents would likely sue if you tried to play at the UM, SCSU, or UMD.elliott70 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 8:57 am per QRF 2-24-21

Yes, this is my point. Unless you have a single class tournament, you're just trying to accommodate the Everyone Wins a Trophy crowd. You can have your 16 team field, and after only one class A team makes the semifinal round in the first 5 or 6 years, we will hear whining about how unfair it is, and we need to seed one class A team into the semis.
Another thing is, I wonder how many teams who make the class AA tournament would not even care. It comes off as a 3 day 8 team consolation tournament. You think Mariucci is a downer environment now, your class AA consolation on Saturday morning will draw worse than a Dodge City JV game.
