New Section alignments for a three class state play-off

Post by LSQRANK » Sun Mar 07, 2021 11:50 pm

Might be getting to the time where Minnesota Boys HS Hockey converts from a two-class system to a three-class system similar to Michigan and Massachusetts.

How about this as a starting point?

Why not 64 classes? That way EVERYBODY goes to state. Win win! The kids will live much, much better lives because of it. And Hermantown can play in Class 64A so they make darn sure they win state every year. Yay

Interesting idea! We'd certainly see some schools from D3 make state that we've never seen before (which is the point of the lower classes)

Exactly! If you want to promote hockey in traditionally lesser programs in Minnesota, one needs to expand the possibilities for the program to get to the state tournament. For example, if Proctor has a reasonable chance from year to year in a 3 class system to make it to state, would that promote the retention of its better players to stay in the program rather than defect to Hermantown, or another higher-end program? I don't know the answer to this, but its worth a discussion.

Elliott you are right on. I recoded the section and class numbers assigned to the teams, then reran the rating profile... not what I would expect, so I ended up making a second version after making a few switch-a-roos.

Section 8 should look something like:

AAA Roseau, Moorhead, Brainerd, Bemidji East Grand Forks, Warroad, Thief River Falls

AA Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Little Falls, Detroit Lakes, Crookston, Northern Lakes

A Red Lake Falls, Kittson, Park Rapids, Bagley, LOW, Wadena

And some could be switched around now or in the future.

Say FF and Alex could be switched with Warroad and TRF.

(That is if you are breaking up the state geographically by size and a bit by quality.)

I made a few more switch-a-roo's then re-ran the rating profile and got this result.
I find it interesting that by dividing the state up on a more geographical basis, certain aspects start to pop-out.
The "new" section alignments tend to be very competitive amoung the bulk of each section, much more so than the current 2 class system.

How about take the liberal way out and just issue a trophy to everyone? I am sure there can be names associated with them.
There should also be a tournament just for the teams in the cities with the first ring suburbs included.
Keep it the way it is, working fine....

I understand your viewpoint, but the current two-class system needs to be "re-calibrated" so the upper or perennially more successful teams are all in the upper-division. Anomalies like Hermantown and Mahtomedi, etc being a class A is just silly, if the premise of having two classes holds. Discussing a 3-class system in Minnesota just brings these inequalities into the spotlight. Besides, if Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Massachusetts can implement a 3 class state playoff system, Minnesota has little excuses not to do so itself.

Or could we re-calibrate back to one class?

OK, then why not have just one class for all other sports like basketball, football, baseball, swimming & diving etc? fair question. What is the justification for having 5 or 6 classes in HS Boys football?

Football has 6 A level teams and none man (no 6 man that I know of).
So 7 levels.
The top 7 or so metro teams make up 6A.
About 60 in 9 man.
Total teams roughly 350. Take out the bottom and top of 90 you have about 260 over five levels. About 52 per level.

Basketball ahs about 400 teams with 4 classes or about 100 per class.
Using basketball we are fine with 2 classes.

Hockey has about 150 teams - if you use football as the comparison you would have 3 classes.
I am not advocating but enjoy discussing the possible alternatives.

You are right. The direct comparison with other sports fails. If hockey want to keep up, then expand it. 11 games over three days with one champion was exciting. More teams, more days, and fewer fan have been a watered-down product.

Please don’t require 1A to be played at the X.

I agree that trying to fit all games in a three class state tournament at the X may be pushing the logistical limits, maybe .
Let figure out if it is possible. Quarter finals would be no problem, just start on the tues. Fitting 6 semi-final games in one day would be the greatest issue. How many hours does MSHSL/Xcel need for each set of two games?

TUES D3 quarter-finals @X
WEDS D2 quarter-finals @X
THU D1 quarter-finals @X
FRI D3 semi-final @ UMN Ritter?
FRI D2 semi-final @X
FRI D1 semi-final @X
SAT D3 Final @ X 10:00am
SAT D2 Final @ X 2:00pm
SAT D1 Final @ X 6:00pm

Ok, so that would mean 6 games grouped in 3 pairs to be played on SAT.
Would have to start early and end late.

D3 7:00am to 12:00 noon
12 noon to 1:00pm change over
D2 1:00pm to 6:00pm
6pm to 7pm change over
D3 7pm to 12 mid-night
