2021-22 Enrollment Data

Post by Stang5280 » Fri Mar 26, 2021 3:14 pm

In the 6A thread it was mentioned that Sartell would be moving up to AA for the next cycle, which came as a surprise to me. That prompted me to poke around the horribly organized MSHSL website, and I came upon the enrollment data and classification process for 2021-22 and 2022-23. Obviously this process is still ongoing, but the cutoff for AA/A and school enrollments have been published. Here’s the relevant link:
https://www.mshsl.org/classification-an ... -resources

Apparently the enrollment cutoff for AA will be 1299 and above. At a quick glance, that would put New Prague (1250) and Northfield (1281) back to single A, while Sartell (1318) moves up to AA. There are still appeals to be heard and geographic alignments to be altered, but this gives us an idea of some initial changes. Notably, Alexandria (1206) and Mahtomedi (1126) remain comfortably below the enrollment cutoff. Let me know if you notice any other changes for schools, but I mostly just wanted to share this info.

Waconia (1288) dangerously close to AA on its own not counting any co-ops. Not sure how the process works but would not be shocked to see them replace New Prague in 2AA. Would have to imagine that Waconia is growing faster than the latter.

Yeah, I noticed that one as well. It doesn’t appear that Waconia is currently in a cooperative with any other schools. So that should keep them safely below the limit. Even if Waconia’s enrollment did push them into AA, they would have a strong argument to remain in A based on the short history of the program and lack of success.

Another school that caught my eye was Bemidji, where the enrollment is up to 1294. They barely even need to opt up to AA.

How do the co-ops work, as far as the attendance and classification? I see one bad hockey team that is a co-op of two schools that both fit fairly well below the cut off, but together they are pretty big. Maybe that's one of the appeals? Interesting to look at the list of enrollments.

Yes how do the CO-ops work?
Richfield and Southwest Christian make up is 1309. Over the cutoff...
How many other Co-ops are at this cutoff?

If I remember correctly, 100% of the largest school and then 50% of any additional schools in the coop.

Co-ops also get the opportunity to appeal if they’re moved up. See Minneapolis. Marshall out west and Mound Westonka were put into AA the last large re-alignment due to co-ops and both were able to opt down.
