Class A Ranking Week #3 (12/12/2021)

1- Hermantown (7A) (4-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 Wayzata, W 6-3 Rosemount
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Duluth Marshall, 12/16 @ Greenway, 12/18 @ #2 Mahtomedi
The Hawks weekend got off to a good and bad start at Wayzata. The good thing is they showed they could play a tight checking low scoring game and the transfer of Duluth East’s Dane Callaway gives the Hawks big time goalie their teams have lacked in the past. The bad was losing Zam Pante, the engine of their lineup. Minus Zam the Hawks relied on Dallas Vieau, George Pertson, and Gavin Blomdahl big day’s offensively to pull away from Rosemount late and move to (4-0-0) on the year. This week they should get two wins before they are set to travel to Mahtomedi on Saturday which looks to be the Class A Game of the year as of this date.

2- Mahtomedi (4A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 Hill Murray, W 3-2 St. Thomas Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 12/18 vs #1 Hermantown
The Zephyrs opened the week vs AA Hill Murray and despite being outplayed for large portions of the game they were able to hang around and eventually be tied late in the third period. The 55 save heroics of Ben Dardis are what we have become accustomed too and again Mahtomedi showed the potential danger they present with their ability to hang around in games. The Zephyrs did rebound finishing their week with a 3-2 win over STA. Charlie Drage’s 2 goals and Dardis’s 35 saves were all Mahtoemdi needed for the big win. This week just one game on the schedule they host #1 Hermantown. 1 vs. 2 early in the year should be a great game next Saturday!

3- Warroad (8A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Rock Ridge, W 4-3 OT Grand Rapids
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 @ #7 East Grand Forks, 12/18 vs. Rogers
The Warriors got their weekend set of games going nicely with a dominant win over Rock Ridge led up front by Jayson Shaugabay (5 pts.) and Damon Gardner (4 pts.) Warroad cruised to a 6-0 win. Hampton Slukynski secured his first shutout of the year. They then took on AA Grand Rapids and jumped out 3-0 they got some secondary scoring in this one only to see the lead evaporate in the third however, The Warriors responded by winning in OT. Big week vs Rival EGF and good AA Rogers will tell us a lot more about this team moving forward. This weekend was a nie step forward for their group.

4- Fergus Falls (6A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Sauk Rapids, W 7-1 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Brainerd, 12/17 @ Rochester Century, 12/18 @ Owatonna
The Otters stayed unbeaten this week as their week got off to a weird start with the COVID PPD of Sartell. However, they rolled against Sauk Rapids winning easily 6-1 behind Junior Issac Johnson’s 3 point night. They followed that up by blasting Hutchinson 7-1 behind Johnson again with the help of DeBrito and Zierden on Saturday and the Otters are officially rolling over competition. This week they play three AA teams starting with struggling winless Brainerd and then they take a southern swing against Century and Owatonna. Three more winnable games for the unbeaten Otters.

5- Little Falls (5A) (7-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-6 OT #13 Alexandria, W 6-3 Pine City
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs Cambridge, 12/18 vs. Sauk Rapids
The Flyers had a game for the ages on Tuesday night as they fell behind 6-1 in the second period. They ended up reuniting their big line of Johnson, Filippi and Oothoudt and they just kept fighting back. They got some heroics from Senior DefenderGeorge Moore to tie it in the last 1:30 and they finished it off with a shorthanded winner in OT by senior Defender Collin Kray. The Flyers finished the week with a chippy Section 5A win 6-3 over Pine City which saw the teams combine for 22 penalties. This week Little Falls looks to strengthen their grip on the #1 seed with an interesting game vs 5A Cambridge beware of 9th Grader Netminder Jaxon Sibell and they finish with 5A Sauk Rapids.

6- Delano (2A) (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Chanhassen, W 2-1 #20 Mound Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs. Breck , 12/18 vs. Hutchinson
Not Delano’s best week, it got off on the wrong foot as they ran into tough young up and coming AA Chanhassen club. Anders Peterson and Bruce Halonen scored for the Tigers as they were tied 2-2 after one. However, Chanhassen got the next two on the Powerplay and with an empty net to seal Delano’s first loss of the season. They rebounded somewhat against Mound Westonka. Will Brown was the hero; his third period goal allowed the Tigers to escape a tight one. Not overly impressive week by Delano. They have two 2A games this week at home they should roll in and get back on track.

7- East Grand Forks (8A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 14-0 Crookston, W 3-2 OT Grand Forks Central
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs. #3 Warroad, 12/18 vs. #13 Alexandria
The Greenwave got their week started by blowing out Section 8A Crookston 14-0. Panzer again led the way along with big nights from Schultz and Magner. The shots in this were an incredible 59 to 1 that's one way to cover up for some shaky goaltending. The Greenwave backed that up with a very nice come from behind win over a very good Grand Forks Central team. Justin Overgaard netted the game winner on the PP late in the third for the big win. This week two more home games, the first of what will likely be 3 matchups with 8A rival Warroad and they end the week hosting a very solid Alexandria team.

8- Minneapolis (2A) (5-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-2 #14 Providence Academy, 12/11 W 4-2 #13 Alexandria
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Hutchinson, 12/16 @ Orono
Great week for Minneapolis who started their week with a big statement win over Section 2A Providence Academy. They broke up a tied game behind the Hattick of Evan Grimm and the efforts of the Hanson brothers. On Saturday they went north and took down a solid Alexandria club they jumped out 4-0 and then rode the solid goaltending of Alex Lamont to a nice 4-2 road win. This week they take on Hutchinson at home before hitting the road in another critical Section 2A game at Orono.

9- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Hibbing, W 6-2 Cloquet
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Rock Ridge, 12/16 @ Superior, 12/18 vs. Proctor
The Hunters got a nice win over Section 7A Hibbing to start their week. In a game that was tight only up 1-0 after 2 periods Denfeld led by the McClure twins was able to pull away with a big 4 goal third period to secure a big section win. They followed that up with a nice win over Cloquet. Again, the Hunters used a big third period to break open the game. This week they have 3 more winnable games up north two of which are 7A games for seeding. Look for the Hunters to continue to roll.

10- Northfield (1A) (3-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Red Wing
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 @ Faribault
Northfield only had one game this week and they were impressive in that showing. They took down fellow Section 1A Red Wing 5-0. They outshot the Wingers 63-15 and they were led by Sophomore Kamden Kaiser’s Hattrick and overall 5 point night. This week they again just have one game and it's a rematch with Faribault this time on the road.

11- Northern Lakes (6A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Brainerd, W 8-0 Becker/Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Morris/Benson, 12/16 vs. #16 Detroit Lakes, 12/17 @ Park Rapids
The Lightning got a big program victory over their AA neighbors Brainerd to start their week. In a game they 56-17 it showed they are fine a goalie this year as Junior Ethan Kunz was strong and the 2 goal effort by Junior Darby Boelter helped lead Northern Lakes to a very big win. The Lightning came back with a big win over Becker Big Lake to get 2 wins on their week. This week Northern Lakes has three games during a busy week. The big one will be vs. #16 Detroit Lakes in a key Mid-State Conference game on Thursday.

12- New Prague (1A) (2-1-1)
Past Week Results: T 3-3 Orono, W 6-0 Faribault
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Chaska, 12/18 @ Chanhassen
The Trojans enter the rankings as well this week. They started off with a solid tie on the road at Orono. After that they took care of business vs. Section 1A Faribault led by Portner’s hat trick and Puente’s shut out. This week they take on some old 2AA competition as they play Chaska and then Chanhassen both will be good tests. This team will be the other top contender in 1A and they play a tough schedule all winter that will have them prepared and ready to play.

13- Alexandria (6A) (1-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 6-7 OT #5 Little Falls, L 2-4 #8 Minneapolis
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Sauk Rapids, 12/16 vs. River Lakes, 12/18 @ #7 East Grand Forks
A rough week for Alexandria came out flying against Little Falls building a 6-1 lead at one point in the 2nd period. It was a balanced attack led by Brycen Berg’s 2 goal however, Little Falls mounted an amazing comeback and scored 6 unanswered the final being a shorty in OT to give the Cards a tough loss on the road. They followed that up by digging a 0-4 hole vs Minneapolis in their home opener. They did fight back but it wasn't enough and the Cardinals fell to (1-3-0) and fell in the rankings as well. This week they should get 2 wins before heading to #7 EGF for a good test next Saturday.

14- Providence Academy (2A) (3-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-8 #8 Minneapolis, W 6-0 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Hopkins, 12/18 vs Armstrong Cooper
The Lions had a rough start to their week as they were handily beaten on the road by 2A Minneapolis. In a game that was tied up 2-2 and very even after 1 period but the wheels fell off the 2nd and third and Minneapolis scored 6 unanswered to claim a big 2A win. They did end the week on a better note, dominating a previously undefeated Section 2A Hutchinson team. This week they have 2 more winnable games against AA Hopkins and Armstrong/Cooper.

15- Southwest Christian (2A) (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Hopkins, W 3-1 Dodge County
Upcoming Schedule: 12/18 vs Gentry Academy
Southwest Chrisitian started their week with a win over Hopkins 3-2. While the score wasn't overly impressive the Stars did find a way to win the game. They then took on Dodge County and methodically wore the Wildcats down and came away with another 3-1 victory. Nothing flashy about this group, they just find a way to win hockey games at this point. Only one game on the schedule this coming week and its a big one vs AA Gentry.

16- Detroit Lakes (8A) (3-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 Park Rapids, W 9-0 Prairie Centre
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Bemidiji, 12/16 @ #12 Northern Lakes 12/18 vs. Crookston
The Lakers enter my poll this week after being overlooked the previous two. They have only 2 losses and both were to top 10 teams. They took care of business this week racking up 2 wins vs. Park Rapids and Prairie Centre. They have used very balanced scoring to be competitive in every game so far. This week will be telling as they have two really good road test vs. a good AA Bemidiji and a Big Mid-State Conference game at #13 Northern Lakes before finishing up with 8A Crookston at home.

17- St. Cloud Cathedral (5A) (3-3-0)
Past week: W 6-4 Princeton, W 6-3 Duluth Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Prairie Centre , 12/18 vs. Wadena Deer Creek
The Crusaders much like the Detroit Lakes above them have losses only to top 10 teams (Warroad, LF, EGF).They showed in those games they can compete with the top teams in Class A. This week they showed they look to be the other contender in 5A. Led by senior Nolan Widman’s 6 goal week the Crusaders offense has a youth feel beyond him the next two leading scorers are freshman and their leading scoring defenseman is sophomore and sophomore has played every minute in net. The youth movement looks to be paying off as the Crusaders keep getting better. Should be able to get two more wins this week.

18- Chisago Lakes (4A) (4-0-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 Monticello, W 11-1 Becker/Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Pine City, 12/16 vs Princeton, 12/18 vs #20 Mound Westonka
The Wildcats stayed in the rankings this week getting a good win at Monticello to start the week 4-1. It was a complete game for them as they jumped out to a lead and never looked back. After that they continued their scoring exploits with a dominant win over Becker/Big Lake. This week they are busy taking on 5A Pine City & Princeton before finishing the week with an interesting game vs. Mound Westonka who sits just below them in the poll.

19- Mankato East (3A) (4-3-0)
Past Week: W 8-3 Mankato West, W 8-0 Austin, W 2-0 Owatonna
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs. Winona, 12/18 vs. Rochester John Marshall
Really nice week for the Cougars they started with a big win over cross town rival Mankato West 8-3. Junior Brayden Borgmeier’s 4 point night led the way. Landon Metcalf’s 3 point night helped them blow by Austin and they finished with a very good 2-0 win over Owatonna led by Caelin Brueske’s shut out. I had to rank them ahead of Mound Westonka who they beat head to head and they look like the favorites in a down 3A. This week 2 very winnable Big 9 games vs. Winona and John Marshall.

20- Mound Westonka (2A) (3-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 Chanhassen, W 5-3 Breck, L 1-2 #6 Delano
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Monticello, 12/18 @ #18 Chisago Lakes
The White Hawks as always are one of the toughest teams to rank. They had a decent week playing a good young AA Chanhassen to the wire. They won a critical Section 2A road game at Breck and then went to Section 2A favorite Delano and played them tight as well. This week will help give a better idea on Mound Westonka they play at Monticello on Tuesday which will be a curious one to see where in the heck the Moose are at and they finish with a good on at #18 Chisago Lakes who sit right above them in the rankings this week.

Dropped out of the rankings- Breck, Orono, Monticello, Luverne

Luverne gets dropped for winning. East loses to Century but Century gets beat by Faribault.

Your rankings, your criteria. I guess🤔

I spent an hour on the Luverne debate this week. I really wanted to see them vs. New Ulm them not playing and having only 1 solid win a 7-6 OT over Marshall who lost Windom who lost Waconia who lost to Pine City if we want to chase down that hole.

Mankato East has a win over Mound Westonka. I have believed from the start they were the favorite in 3A they have looked good this week against ok Big 9 Teams.

I think Luverne will keep winning although I am curious to see how they do against Windom and Worthington both have their top squads in years. Luverne goes unbeaten this week they are back in the rankings. I will keep considering. Same with Greenway another team thats hard to read. Both have a case. Also, last week I over looked DL and NP wanted to include them. Not the perfect logic just my thoughts.

Good thoughts though I agree I could have kept Luverne they got punished for not having a game and Mankato East winning 3 in a row.

If I am being honest 12-30 could go many different ways.

If I was doing top 25 the next 5 would be...
21.Luverne
22, New Ulm
23. Greenway
24. Simley
25. Orono

Class A Section by Section Breakdown Week #3-

Section 1A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Northfield (10)- (3-1-0)
2- New Prague (12) (2-1-1)
3- Rochester Lourdes-(3-1-0)
4- Albert Lea- (1-1-0)
5- Red Wing- (2-2-0)
6- Faribault- (3-4-0)
7- La Crescent- (3-2-0)
8- Winona (1-3-0)
9- Waseca (0-5-0)
10- Austin (0-2-0)
11- Cotter (0-1-0)

Section 1A Overview- Northfield and New Prague appear to be destined to meet for the first time in the Section 1A Final. Rochester Lourdes appears to be moving to the top of the best of the rest pile putting together three straight wins. Albert Lea, Red Wing and Faribault will battle it out for the next seeds. Curious on what is going on with Cotter they haven't played since November.

Section 2A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Delano (6)- (4-1-0)
2- Minneapolis (8)- (5-1-0)
3- Providence Academy (14)- (3-2-0)
4- Southwest Christian (15)- (4-1-0)
5- Mound Westonka (20) (3-3-0)
6- Orono- (2-4-1)
7- Breck- (0-3-0)
8- Hutchinson- (4-2-0)
9- Waconia (3-2-0)
10- Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato- (2-2-0)
11- Bloomington Kennedy- (0-3-0)

Section 2A Overview- Delano showed they are beatable with their game against the White Hawks. Minneapolis had a big week and jumped up in the rankings and polls. Southwest Chrsitian, Providence Academy, and Mound Westonka are muddled in the middle. Orono and Breck as 6 and 7 seeds is just silly. Very deep Section as has been stated.

Section 3A (10 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Mankato East (19)- (4-3-0)
2- New Ulm- (4-0-0)
3- Luverne- (3-0-0)
4- Windom- (3-1-0)
5- Marshall- (3-3-0)
6- Worthington (2-1-0)
7- Minnesota River (2-3-0)
8- Mankato West- (1-4-0)
9- Fairmont- (1-3-0)
10- Redwood Valley-(1-3-0)

Section 3A Overview- Mankato East looks to be slowly coming into form and looks like the favorite again in 3A. New Ulm and Luverne’s big match up got PPD. Windom had a big win over Marshall last week and Worthington might have its best team ever. Mankato West’s loss to Minnesota River looks worse by the week. Lots of parody in this Section.

Section 4A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Mahtomedi (2)- (4-2-0)
2- Chisago Lakes (18)- (4-0-1)
3- Simley- (4-2-0)
4- St. Paul Highland Park- (3-4-0)
5- South St Paul- (1-2-0)
6- Two Rivers- (2-3-0)
7- St. Paul Johnson- (1-1-0)
8- St. Paul Academy- (1-3-0)

Section 4A Overview- Mahtomedi continues to be the heavy favorite in this section. Chisago Lakes had a good week picking up two wins. Simley may have had a better week with their two wins, the big one over St Paul Highland Park who just beat South St Paul. Two River had a nice northern swing to pick up two wins of their own.

Section 5A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Little Falls (5)- (7-0-0)
2- St. Cloud Cathedral (17)- (3-3-0)
3- Cambridge Isanti- (3-2-0)
4- Monticello (1-4-0)
5- Princeton- (2-2-0)
6- River Lakes- (2-3-0)
7- Mora (2-3-1)
8- Sauk Rapids (2-3-0)
9- Pine City (1-5-0)
10- Becker/Big Lake- (1-4-0)

Section 5A Overview- Little Falls continues to win and be the dominant team in 5A. St Cloud Cathedral is getting better every time out. Watch out for Cambridge; they have won 3 in a row since Freshman Jaxon Sibell took over in the nets. Monticello is reeling but still the 4 seed for now. Princeton appears to be the best of the rest.

Section 6A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Fergus Falls (4)- (5-0-0)
2- Northern Lakes (11)- (2-1-0)
3- Alexandria (13)- (1-3-0)
4- Wadena Deer Creek- (4-2-0)
5- Morris Benson- (2-2-0)
6- Willmar- (1-4-0)
7- Prairie Centre- (1-4-0)
8- Breckenridge/Wahpeton- (0-2-0)

Section 6A Overview- Fergus Falls had a nice week and continues to stay on top of 6A. Northern Lakes and Alexandria are even with the Lighting having the edge early on. Wadena Deer Creek looks solid at 4 and there is not much really after that.

Section 7A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Hermantown (1)- (4-0-0)
2- Duluth Denfeld (9)- (4-2-0)
3- Greenway- (3-0-0)
4- Hibbing- (2-3-0)
5- Rock Ridge- (1-3-0)
6- Proctor- (3-2-0)
7- North Shore- (1-1-0)
8- International Falls- (0-4-0)
9- Ely- (1-3-0)
10- Moose Lake- (0-7-0)

Section 7A Overview- Hermantown continues to roll against AA teams even without Zam which is just silly. Duluth Denfeld got on track with 2 good wins. Greenway is (3-0-0) with the Hawks coming to town this week. Hibbing got snowed out of their trip south this weekend. Meanwhile Rock Ridge finally got its first program win to see if that can get them going.

Section 8A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Warroad (3)- (5-0-0)
2- East Grand Forks (7)- (4-2-0)
3- Detroit Lakes (16)- (3-2-0)
4- Thief River Falls- (1-4-0)
5- Red Lake Falls- (3-3-0)
6- Kittson Central- (3-1-1)
7- Crookston- (0-3-1)
8- Park Rapids- (3-2-0)
9- Lake of the Woods- (2-2-0)
10- Bagley/Fosston- (1-5-0)

Section 8A Overview- Warroad and East Grand Forks have the first of their most likely three showdowns this week in EGF. Detroit Lakes is trying to upset the power structure in 8A but don’t out Thief River Falls. Red Lake Falls looks to be the clear 5 seed and it's a battle after that between Kittson Central, Crookston, and Park Rapids.

A few notes ahead of the rankings:
- I didn’t realize until I came here that I have the exact same top 8 as ClassAGuy
- I am not at all confident in these rankings below about #12
- Lastly, a programming note: due to some health care issues (not actual health, I am generally fine), I likely won’t be doing rankings write ups for the next few weeks)

1. Hermantown (4-0-0) [LW 1]
W 2-1 @ Wayzata, W 6-3 vs Rosemount
The Hawks knocked off two more AA foes, though the weekend came at a steep cost. Superstar Zam Plante came out of the Friday game early, clutching his wrist area, and didn't return to the lineup. Obviously that is a big loss if he is out for an extended period. On the ice, Wayzata pushed Hermantown (in multiple ways) over the final two stanzas, but the speedier Hawks held up and prevailed. The Rosemount game was a choppy, chippy affair, but the Hawks were able to draw upon their depth to light the lamp half a dozen times times. Opsahl has been shaky in net during his two starts, so Callaway may get the nod going forward in big games. Hermantown finally has its first 7A contest, followed by a much anticipated showdown with Mahtomedi.
Tue vs Duluth Marshall, Thu @ Greenway, Sat @ Mahtomedi

2. Mahtomedi (4-2-0) [LW 2]
L 2-3 @ H-M, W. 3-2 vs STA
The Zephyrs split with their two AA conference rivals by the same score, and that's more than enough to keep them tucked into the two spot. Dardis continues to play at almost superhuman level in net - he was credited with 55 saves against Hill (which seemed a bit dubious) and 35 more versus STA. The offensive production has not completely dried up, however. Brent Gulenchyn has a goal in each of the last three games, and Charlie Drage scored twice against STA. There's only one game on deck, but it's a doozy, and maybe the game of the season in Class A.
Sat vs Hermantown

3. Warroad (5-0-0) [LW 5]
W 6-0 vs Rock Ridge, W 4-3 (OT) vs Grand Rapids
The Warriors performance was more reminiscent of a top-flight team this week, and the ping pong back into the third slot. Manhandling Rock Ridge was a good sign, though the Wolverines have been plenty disappointing, but the Rapids win was huge. Fergus Falls doesn't have any results on this level, so Warroad leapfrogs them. The Warriors let a 3-0 lead slip away in the final 23 minutes of regulation, but Murray Marvin-Cordes saved the day in overtime. He has a goal in three straight games, and Jayson Shaugabay went off for two goals and five points against Rock Ridge, so Warroad is relying less on Daimon Gardner to carry the offense. Warroad has upcoming dates with two more tricky adversaries: their section archrival and ascendant Rogers. Escaping without adding a blemish to their record will be impressive.
Thu @ EGF, Sat vs Rogers

4. Fergus Falls (5-0-0) [LW 4]
W 6-1 vs Sauk Rapids, W 7-1 vs Hutchinson
Following postponement of the Sartell scrap, the Otters devoured two overmatched opponents. Not much to glean from these two performances other than the fact that Isaac Johnson and Michael DeBrito continue to put up absurd point totals, while Cole Zierden net minder Ben Swanson has only surrendered five goals in five games. The schedule remains soft despite three AA opponents, with only Century providing a moderate challenge.
Tue @ Brainerd, Fri @ Century, Sat @ Owatonna

5. Little Falls (7-0-0) [LW 6]
W 7-6 (OT) vs Alex, W 6-3 @ Pine City
The Flyers pulled off a comeback for the ages Tuesday night, erasing a five-goal deficit over the final 19 minutes and sealing the deal with a shorthanded goal in extra time. The win over Pine City wasn't pretty, but kept the ball rolling. Little Falls will need to tighten up their discipline and defensive zone play if they wish to avoid such escapades in the future. While the defense and goaltending have been shaky, the top line has been a force, with Matt Filippi and Hayden Johnson among the state scoring leaders. This week kicks off a run of six straight lower-tier opponents through the end of the year, and the Flyers could well turn the calendar to 2022 sporting a bagel in the loss column.
Thu vs Cambridge, Sat vs Sauk Rapids

6. Delano (4-1-0) [LW 3]
L 2-4 @ Chanhassen, W 2-1 vs Mound
As good as the Tigers were in the first three games, they looked exceedingly average this week. The youngsters from Chan outskated and outhustled Delano in knocking them from the ranks of the unbeaten. This was followed by a listless performance against the White Hawks that was a rough watch. Still, a win is a win and it is hard to justify placing them behind EGF. Will Brown is still leading the way by far in goals, though Anders Peterson is coming on of late. Huotari has put up far superior stats in goal, but has faced lesser competition. The upcoming week brings two more section contests against teams Delano should dispatch easily, at least on paper.
Thu vs Breck, Sat vs Hutchinson

7. East Grand Forks (4-2-0) [LW 7]
W 14-0 vs Crookston, W 3-2 vs GF Central
The Green Wave have ripped off three straight wins since the disastrous performance against Mahtomedi and appear to have righted the ship, at least for now. We won't speak of the Crookston walkover, but EGF comported itself well in the first of its border battles and posted a nice comeback win over Central. The offense continue to revolve around Panzer, but sophomore Grady Magner and defenseman Sam Frost have chipped in with scoring recently. Sophomore Lucas Wavra started his first two varsity contests this week and seems to have added a stabilizing presence (granted, he only faced one shot versus Crookston). The intensity will be turned up a notch with skirmishes against two fellow top ten teams.
Thu vs Warroad, Sat vs Alexandria

8. Minneapolis (5-1-0) [LW 12]
W 8-2 vs Providence, W 4-2 @ Alex
Minneapolis is my team of the week after stellar performances against two ranked opponents. The two games were mirror images of sorts. The Providence contest was tied 2-2 after the first period, and Minneapolis blew open the game from there. Minneapolis jumped on Alexandria right out of the gate, and the Cardinals only scratched back late. Jack Hanson had two goals and four assists on the week and has emerged as the scoring leader. Two section skirmishes are ahead, with Orono being the more interesting of the pair.
Tue vs Hutch, Thu @ Orono

9. Duluth Denfeld (4-2-0) [LW 10]
W 5-0 @ Hibbing, W 6-2 vs Cloquet
I compared the Hunters to EGF last week, and they likewise showed marked defensive improvement in posting a pair of resounding victories. The game flows were quite similar, with Denfeld pulling away in the third period both times. Connor McClure has been an offensive force, with nine goals overall and two in each of the past three games. Goalie Austin Wick was much better than his early performances, saving 37 of 39 shots on the week. Nothing particularly interesting on the horizon, and the Hunters should continue to solidify their section positioning.
Tue @ Rock Ridge, Thu @ Superior, Sat vs Proctor

10. Northfield (4-1-0) [LW 9]
W 5-0 vs Red Wing
The Raiders continued to rip through the soft underbelly of the Big Nine and 1A. Last week I sung the praises of Cayden Monson, but this time it was fellow sophomore Kamden Kaiser who broke out in a big way. Kaiser figured into all five goals in the Red Wing win, including a hat trick. Keaton Walock has been stingy between the pipes, posting his second straight shutout and boasting a 0.946 save percentage. There's only a single game on the slate again, a return date with a Faribault team they also blanked 5-0.
Thu @ Faribault

11. Alexandria (1-3-0) [LW 8]
L 6-7 (OT) @ Little Falls, L 2-4 vs Minneapolis
While it's probably unfair to place the Cardinals this far behind Little Falls, Alex was outscored 7-3 following an early five minute power play during which they scored three times. The Cardinals came out flat on Saturday and couldn't mount a comeback of their own. The only win thus far is over a weak River Lakes squad. Brycen Berg and Joe Gronholz accounted for five of the six goals, while senior goalie Gabe Evink picked up the win over River Lakes in his first varsity start. Alexandria has basically two warm-up contests prior to a weekend trip up I-94.
Tue vs Sauk Rapids, Thu vs River Lakes, Sat @ EGF

12. Northern Lakes (2-1-0) [LW 13]
W 4-2 @ Brainerd, W 8-0 @ Becker
Our third 6A team, the Lightning chained together a few triumphs over a very down Brainerd and crummy Becker/Big Lake. More importantly, Northern Lakes secured the "The Battle for the Paddle" traveling trophy with the Brainerd win. Goaltender Cyril Thull has been rock solid in his first varsity action, earning two wins and a shutout. The activity level will ramp up with three games this week, though it should amount to two cakewalks with a juicy Thursday matchup sandwiched in between.
Tue vs Morris, Thu vs Detroit Lakes, Fri @ Park Rapids

13. Chisago Lakes (4-0-1) [LW NR]
W 4-1 @ Monticello, W 12-1 @ Becker
The Wildcats enter the rankings with a bang by comfortably defeating a mercurial Monticello crew, and then pounding poor Becker/Big Lake. Chisago has averaged a ridiculous 7.0 goals per game in the early going, and Nicholas Helland and Ryan Schmidt lead the pack with 17 points apiece. The Wildcats apparently adjusted to their new section digs in 4A about as well as I remember that they changed sections, as they only face three in-section foes all season. They continue their run of middling 5A/Mississippi 8 opponents before a potentially interesting date with enigmatic Mound Westonka.
Tue @ Pine City, Thu vs Princeton, Sat vs Mound

14. Mankato East (4-3-0) [LW NR]
W 8-3 @ Mankato West, W 8-0 @ Austin, W 2-0 vs Owatonna
The Cougars re-enter the rankings after a three-win week. All of East's losses were at the hands of decent AA opponents, and they do own a win over Mound Westonka. This is a team with very well balanced scoring – three players are tied at the top with eight points, including sophomore Christian Theuninck, and several more are right behind. Anthony Parker registered a goal in all three games this past week. The Cougars should continue to feast on weaker Big Nine competition.
Thu vs Winona, Sat vs Rochester JM

15. Mound Westonka (3-3-0) [LW 14]
L 1-3 vs Chanhassen, W 5-3 @ Breck, L 1-2 @ Delano
I feel gross keeping the White Hawks up in this range after a two-loss week, but they do have the win over Providence and a close loss to Delano.
Max Krebsbach and Michael Doshan continue to be a potent tandem up front, supported by Cooper Kantola chipping in from the point. Mound Westonka hits the road twice this week, with two games outside of their conference and section.
Tue @ Monticello, Sat @ Chisago Lakes

16. Providence Academy (3-2-0) [LW 15]
L 2-8 @ Minneapolis, W 6-0 vs Hutch
The Lions slip a spot after a very uneven week in which they split two six-goal decisions. After a first stanza that ended with the teams tied 2-2, Minneapolis turned on the jets and ran them out of Parade. Providence flipped the script Saturday and controlled the Tigers from start to finish, with Andrew Owen netting a hat trick. Sophomore Evan Villagomez stopped all 17 shots to earn his first career shutout. Next on the agenda are two lower-tier AA squads that the Lions should defeat without too much difficulty.
Tue @ Hopkins, Sat @ Armstrong/Cooper

17. Detroit Lakes (3-2-0) [LW NR]
W 4-1 vs Park Rapids, W 9-0 @ Prairie Centre
The Lakers blasted two more opponents to bring their record above .500. The scoring has been extremely balanced, with Cole Larson and Spencer Bergman atop the heap with seven points each. The goaltending situation has also been a timeshare; Josh Mack stepped into the fray to great effect this week after Elijah Blow had played the first three games. The difficulty level ramps up considerably with a resurgent Bemidji and the reigning 5A champion upcoming.
Tue @ Bemidji, Thu @ Northern Lakes, Sat vs Crookston

18. Southwest Christian (4-1-0) [LW 16]
W 3-2 @ Hopkins, W 3-1 vs Dodge County
The Stars continue to fall after two uninspiring outings. Hopkins outshot SW Christian, and the Stars needed a late tally to edge out the winless Royals. Scoring has been limited, led by Jared Greiner; fellow sophomore Kaden Feltmann added two goals and a helper versus Dodge County. The play in goal has been strong, with both netminders posting at least a .930 save percentage. Only one game awaits the Stars, but it's the defending Class A champs. At this rate SWC may need a decent showing to remain among the ranked.
Sat vs Gentry

19. St. Cloud Cathedral (3-3-0) [LW NR]
W 6-4 @ Princeton, W 6-3 @ Duluth Marshall
The Crusaders were an early season surprise, mainly for keeping things unexpectedly close against a barrage of top ten opponents. Well, Cathedral now has a few more victories under their belt, and look to be on the rebound after bottoming out last season. Senior Nolan Widman leads what has not been a high scoring group, though there are some nice younger pieces like freshmen John Hirschfeld and Joe Gillespie. Sophomore goalie Nick Hansen has done a respectable job against a difficult opening stretch. The Crusaders enter a less challenging run over the next few weeks which should pad their win total.
Tue @ Prairie Centre, Sat vs Wadena

20. New Prague (2-1-1) [LW NR]
T 3-3 @ Orono, W 6-0 vs Faribault
I am more bearish on the Trojans at this point than others. New Prague's only decent results are the Orono tie and an overtime loss to Shakopee. This is a youthful group, with the top two scorers being freshman Luke Portner and sophomore Braeden Woitas. The Trojans face a big week ahead, with the Chaska/Chan duo, now conference mates, coming up.
Thu vs Chaska, Sat @ Chanhassen

Out: Orono (2-4-1) [LW 11], Monticello (1-4-0) [LW 17], Hibbing (2-3-0) [LW 19], Breck (0-3-0) [LW 20]

Thanks ClassAGuy. Thankfully it is nothing much to worry about, but just more of an inconvenience. I will at least try to maintain numerical rankings and hopefully do some minimal write ups. Keep doing your good work as well, and I will certainly be around here still!

19- Alexandria (6A) (1-3-0)
20- Luverne (3A) (3-0-0)

Out- Orono, Monticello, Breck

Legacy Hockey Commentary- Overall good poll again didn't move any of the top 9 which I do respect. Moved Minneapolis into the top 10 the big winner of the week. New to the Poll Chisago Lakes and St Cloud Cathedral big winners at 13 and 14 after not mentioned at all prior. Really low on Alexandria and no mention of Mound Westonka. Had the guts to stay with Luverne at 20 and added Mankato East to the poll at 18. Good poll good thoughts great site!!

Class A guy, another reasonable response I hope for.I watched East play Century and lose. I have little faith in East based on that singular experience. Faribault beat Century.

Are Luverne and Windom better? I do not know. 3A will be interesting none the less.

Youth Hockey Hub Class A Rankings Week #3 (12/12/21)
1. Hermantown (7A) (4-0-0)
2. Mahtomedi (4A) (4-2-0)
3. Warroad (8A) (5-0-0)
4. Fergus Falls (6A) (5-0-0)
5. Little Falls (5A) (7-0-0)
6. Delano (2A) (4-1-0)
7. East Grand Forks (8A) (4-2-0)
8. Duluth Denfeld (7A) (4-2-0)
9. Northfield (1A) (3-1-0)
10. Minneapolis (2A) (5-1-0)

YHH Commentary- Good Poll overall. The top three stay the same. Some good discussion on would Fergus Falls beat EGF head to head. However, things are based off of results and while they are not as high on Little Falls they are winning the games they are scheduled to play. Duluth Denfeld and Northfield re-emerge in the rankings after week off. And to Tony's joy Minneapolis enters the Top 10.

Another fun look at Class A!

CLASS A GAMES OF THE WEEK (12/13/21-12/18/21)

Tuesday Dec. 14th
Windom @ Luverne
Interesting matchup down in the Big South Conference and in Section 3A Windom is off to a nice (3-1-0) start and meanwhile Luverne has been rolling at (3-0-0). Will be a good match up here to see if Luverne is indeed back or if Windom is primed for one of their best seasons in program history.

Chaska @ #12 New Prague
New Prague continues to play its old 2AA schedule and this one will be a good test for them. They host undefeated AA Chaska to see how they measure up. A good game to keep an eye one when judging the Trojans.

#9 Duluth Denfeld @ Rock Ridge
Big Section 7A game as Rock Ridge finally plays a home game after securing their first win in program history. They take on the Hunters who appeared to have gotten things figured out and will look to claim another important Section 7A win.

#20 Mound Westonka @ Monticello
Intriguing Class A Matchup Mound Westonka is lurking near the bottom of the ranking and the Moose need something positive to happen. Should be a good match up of mid level Top 20-25 teams in Class A.

Thursday Dec 16th
#3 Warroad @ #7 East Grand Forks
This would be the game of the week normally as this one will be a great early indicator of who has the upper hand in Section 8A. The Warriors will come into town unbeaten and they will get all they want from an ever improving Greenwave squad. This match up is always a good one.

#8 Minneapolis @ Orono
A very good Section 2A Match up. Minneapolis enters the week very hot and they go on the road vs a better than their record Orono who is desperate for something good to happen. This one has barn burner written all over it.

#16 Detroit Lakes @ #11 Northern Lakes
A very good Mid-State Conference matchup between the Lakes. The Lakers of DL have been in every game but have yet to win a big game meanwhile Northern Lakes is looking to prove they were no fluke last year and defend their conference title.

Cambridge @ #5 Little Falls
This one could be interesting. The Blue Jackets enter looking like a top 3 seed in 5A and have been unbeaten since 9th grader Jaxon Sibell took over in the net. The Flyers are rolling and bring in one of the state’s best scoring lines. This has all the makings of a very fun Matchup in Central MN.

Breck @ #6 Delano
Doesn’t have the same appeal it has had in previous years however anytime these two rivals meet Section 2A and Class A is paying attention. Delano showed last week they can play down to other teams and Breck really is struggling needing something good to happen.

Friday Dec. 17th
#4 Fergus Falls @ Rochester Century
The highly potent Otters head south on the weekend. As they will take a long bus trip south and will need to be ready to take on AA Century.

Saturday Dec. 18th
#13 Alexandria @ #7 East Grand Forks
This will be a good battle in Alexandria, who is much better then their record indicates and EGF is starting to get into form. This will be a physical heavyweight battle between two very good traditional Class A Programs.

#20 Mound Westonka @ #18 Chisago Lakes
Another interesting Class A Matchup between two teams near the bottom of the rankings fighting for respect and a big win. Both teams have some players that can light the lamp. This one should be another good game to pay attention to.

Rogers @ #3 Warroad
Another good opportunity for the Warrior here to make a statement on their home ice. Rogers is a yo-yo Class AA team they can play with anyone in the state and have some serious talent. It will be interesting to see how the Warriors respond to that skill.

CLASS A GAME OF THE WEEK
#1 Hermantown @ #2 Mahtomedi (Saturday Dec. 18th)
Maybe the Class A matchup of the year. We are in for a treat as 1 vs 2 take on eachother. The Zephyrs Ben Dardis will need to be on his game as he has been all winter so far. They have seen the likes of CDH, HM and STA so they know the speed and depth and how to limit them. The Hawks, without Zam Plante for a period of time, will look to continue their roll of late over the best teams the state has to offer. This one should be fun and could be a preview of a potential bigger game down the road in March.

Looks like what we are heading for only one I would argue is 2A its so deep I have no idea who is gonna come out of that grinder. But the top 2 elsewhere look very firm and solid. 3A looks fun because with West being way down opens the door for someone new different to make a run ...

Tuesday Night (12/14/21) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
Tuesday Dec 14
Luverne 5 Windom 2

Luverne stays unbeaten with another Big South Conference and Section 3A win at home. This one was tight tied at 2 but a big third period helped Luverne stay unbeaten over a solid Windom team.

Chaska 6 #12 New Prague 1
The Trojans week got off to a rough start as they were dominated by unbeaten AA Chaska falling 6-1 in a game they were never really in. See if they can do better vs AA up and coming Chanhassen later this week.

#9 Duluth Denfeld 6 Rock Ridge 2
The Hunters got their week started in similar fashion to the previous by breaking open a tight Section 7A game vs Rock Ridge in the third period. Junior Kaden Postal’s hat trick led the way and the Hunters again appeared to wear down their opponent.

#20 Mound Westonka 7 Monticello 4
The White Hawks used a 5 goal outburst in the 1st period to build a commanding lead over the Moose. Montiucello did claw back into the game but an empty net goal sealed a very nice road win for Mound Westonka.

Other Notable Class A Games
#1 Hermantown 6 Duluth Marshall 0-
The Hawks will be without Zam until at least January and they have the depth to withstand it with a nice win over the Toppers.

#13 Alexandria 9 Sauk Rapids 4- The Cards go their week off to flying start jumping all over the Storm 9-4 led by the co-hat tricks of Josiah Gronholz and Joe Lamski but the goaltending questions remain as they gave up 4 goals on just 11 shots.

#14 Providence Academy 8 Hopkins 3- The Lions took care of business to begin the week by pouncing on Hopkins. Sammie Lewis and Louie Wehmann’s 4 point nights helped lead the way as Providence picked up a convincing win.

Bemidji 4 #16 Detroit Lakes 1- The Lakers jumped out 1-0 on the road but the Lumberjacks responded and controlled the game the rest of the way.

#17 St. Cloud Cathedral 14 Prairie Centre 0 - The Crusaders destroyed Prairie Centre on the road to start their week 14-0. The youth movement continued for Cathedral as freshman Joey Gillespie led the way with a 4 goal night to keep the Crusaders rolling.

#18 Chisago Lakes 2 Pine City 1- The Wildcats got all they wanted from Pine City. It was not until a PP goal from senior Ryan Schmidt with 40 seconds left in regulation that Chisago Lakes was able to claim a tough road win.

UPSET OF THE NIGHT
Brainerd 5 #4 Fergus Falls 4 OT

WOW did not expect this one. The Warriors are having one of their worst years in a long time and on the road they jumped all over the Otters early. Fergus did fight back and had the lead at one point but Brainerd’s effort was to much they secured a shocking win over the highly ranked Otters.

Thanks for the recaps. I didn’t get a chance to watch any hockey last night, but I will try to find a few replay streams if I can. Definitely a few surprising performances for ranked teams in there, both good and bad. That Fergus loss was rough given how down Brainerd is. They have yet to post a signature win, either.

Thursday Night (12/16/21) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
Thursday Dec 16
#3 Warroad 6 #7 East Grand Forks 3

The Warriors took the first of what most likely is going to be three meetings vs their Section 8A rivals EGF. Daimon Garnder was the difference; his 2 goal 4 point night helped Warroad win a big game on the road in which they never trailed. The Greenwave’s Jaksen Panzer’s 3 point effort was not enough.

#16 Detroit Lakes 4 #11 Northern Lakes 1
In a key Mid-State Conference game the Lakers came out hot and were able to jump to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd period. Northern Lakes did cut the deficit to 2 goals but Detroit Lakes secured the win with a third period goal. The Lakers again used a balanced approach having 4 different goal scorers and this was a nice conference road win for them and sure to shake up the rankings later this week.

#6 Delano 5 Breck 2
Delano’s Will Brown led the way for the Tigers as his 3 point effort was key to them earning a good Section 2A win. Breck hung around in this one for a while but eventually the Tigers were too much. In a very chippy affair which saw 16 combined penalities the flow of the game was not really there. You could tell there is definitely no love lost between these long time Section rivals.

Other Notable Class Games
#10 Northfield 6 Faribault 1- The Raiders struck just 10 seconds into the game and rolled behind Senior Spencer Klotz big night; they also got 3 points from sophomore defenseman Ty Frank.

#19 Mankato East 8 Winona 2- The Cougars continued their winning ways again taking care of business vs the weaker part of the Big 9 Conference. Against Winona they were led by the 4 point nights of Senior Aiden Prochaska and Sophomore Christian Theuninck to cruise to their 4th straight win.

Luverne 6 Worthington 3- RollCardsRoll is back in the deep SW Corner after being absent that past few years. Some new names lead this high scoring bunch, specifically the emergence of Sophomore Patrick Kroski who has 24 points in 5 games.

UPSET of the Night

Princeton 6 #18 Chisago Lakes 4
Awful loss at home for the Wildcats who dug themselves a large hole that they were unable to get out of. They will need to have a better showing vs. Mound Westonka on Saturday or way may see the last of them in the upcoming rankings.

Friday Fun again as the Official State HS Hockey Poll is out for Class A and it getting bad again. This is again the poll that is released to Media Outlets and used by many to help determine State Tournament Seeds.

Let's Play Hockey Hockey Class A Poll (12/16/21)
1- Hermantown (7A) (5-0-0)
2- Warroad (8A) (6-0-0)
3- Mahtomedi (4A) (4-2-0)
4- Little Falls (5A) (7-0-0)
5- Delano (2A) (5-1-0)
6- East Grand Forks (8A) (4-3-0)
7- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (5-2-0)
8- Fergus Falls (6A) (5-1-0)
9- Greenway (7A) (3-0-0)
10- Southwest Christian (2A) (4-1-0)
11- Minneapolis (2A) (5-1-0)
12- Providence Academy (2A) (4-2-0)
13- St Cloud Cathedral (5A) (4-3-0)
14- Chisago Lakes (4A) (5-1-1)
15- Orono (2A) (3-4-1)
16- Mound Westonka (2A) (4-3-0)
17- Sartell (8AA) (3-2-0)
18- Alexandria (6A) (2-3-0)
19- Luverne (3A) (5-0-0)
20- Northfield (1A) (4-1-0)

LPH Hockey Poll Thoughts- Ugly Poll this week.... I dont mind Warroad at 2. I dont mind moving Fergus Falls down after a bad loss to Brainerd. BUT GREENWAY at 9 I am fin if they are mentioned but NINE come on. SWC at 10 is suspect but ok. Orono at 15 is too high in my opinion. Then there is AA SARTELL returning to the poll and AA TG still getting votes that is embarrassing. They are way to low on Northfield but at least they know they are Class A again!

Again this is the state's official poll .... DO BETTER!

This is Christmas come early news! I will be holding the Class A Rankings for 12/17/21 until this is published. PageStat is the best ranking to compare with when looking at computer based rankings and could help with the mess that is Class A Hockey after the Top 10. Also, will help withe Section by Section Breakdowns. I cant wait for this!

I hope you will let us know Lee when it is published I have spent the last three sundays refreshing the page in hopes of seeing this! Thanks for news and nice work Elliott on nailing the Top Four! Those Four would be a fun State SemiFinal Friday on March Afteroon in few months.

Speaking of.. While the inbalance at the top remains if things would hold out... BIG IF would the below be the deepest field ever for a Class A Tournament. Sections 1A, 2A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A, 8A could all have a TOP 10 Representative. Imagine the Wednesday Below ...

#2- Mahtomedi (4A) vs Unseeded Northfield (1A)- Last time these two met in the State Quarters Northfeild ousted them then in Section 4A after Section realignment they took the Zephyrs to the brink in Double OT. They seem to give Mahtomedi fits.

#3 Warroad (8A) vs. Unseeded Fergus Falls (6A)- We will get a preview of this game in January but this one would be a fun Matchup!

#1 Hermantown (7A) vs. Unseeded Luverne (3A)- Luverne is stretch here but they have made it state twice and both times played the Hawks toe-to-toe so be a fun see that match up with Hermantown likely to rout anyone out of 3A maybe the Luverne matchup could produce a good match up like it has the last two times in St Paul.

#4 Delano (2A) vs. #5 Little Falls (5A)- Rematch of last years night cap. Can Delano break their own WBL State Quarter Curse or will the Flyers repeat on last years results...

Again dumb to even speculate but that would be some fun Tourney Headlines..
