Section 6A Champions: Alexandria (19-6-2)

2022 Section 6A Playoffs Preview

Everyone loves an underdog. Well, at least until the underdog becomes the favorite. That’s been the story for Alexandria this year as after years of being the bridesmaid to the private power St Cloud Cathedral new section realignment gave the Cardinals instant credibility of what teams were left and a clean sweep of Section 6A opponents gave them the top-seed in the 6A tournament. Now instead of looking to pull an upset, the Cardinals will be the favorite.

Number 1 seed Alexandria (16-6-2) will need to keep focused and not rest on its previous achievements, the Cardinals will have to rely on its concrete veteran leadership. Senior forwards Josiah Gronholz and Brycen Berg have been around for a while and lead the offensive charge as they both have over 20 goals this winter. Those two will be vital to the section playoff trek of Alexandria, but they can’t do it alone. Luckily for them they have a trio of junior forwards Tyler Kludt, Joe Lamski & Nicholas Peterson all who have over 20 points and add much needed depth to the Cardinals attack. They have had some inconsistent play this winter and have the tendency to allow lower competition to stay in games; those flaws will need to be cleared up as Alexandria aims to return to State for the first time since their 2018 runner up finish.

Number 2 seed Fergus Falls (16-9-0) certainly wasn’t pleased with its regular season, one where expectations were as high as ever before the first puck-drop of the year, and the Otters will be as hungry as ever to make a return trip to the Xcel Energy Center for the first time in nearly 20 years. Junior Isaac Johnson & Senior Michael DeBrito lead the team in scoring. The Otters are not just a two man show as Seniors Carter Thielke & Cole Zierden along with Sophomore Kellen Senstrom all have double digit goals as well. However, for the Otters to make a magical playoff run they will need Junior goaltender Ben Swanson to return to his form of last year where he made it almost impossible to score on him. This is Fergus Falls best shot in a long time and this group will be focused on cashing in after coming up so painfully short a year ago.

Number 3 seed Northern Lakes (14-10-0) has struggled to find consistency all year and hasn’t fared well against top-tier teams. For the Lightning to string together three wins and make a return to the state tournament, top senior scorers Tyler Seeling & Jameson St. Clair and Sophomore snipers Logan Verville & Taylor Berg will have to play extremely well and sophomore goalie Nigel DeSanto , who earned more playing time in the late portion of the season, will have to be lights out.

Number 4 seed Wadena Deer Creek (14-11-0) is having one of its best seasons in years and are led by high scoring Junior forwards Cole Woods and Connor Davis who each have over 20 goals on the year, but the Wolverines don't have a lot of depth. Sophomore Gunner Olson is “the guy” in net, and much like every other goalie on a team looking to shock its section opponents, he’ll have to play his best hockey in the next couple weeks.

Number 5 seed Morris Benson (13-11-1) has had an up and down year and are led by senior Brady DeHaan & Brett Hansen along with juniors Ryan Tolifson & Trevor Buss all who have over 20 points on the year. But the Storm lack depth and have struggled competing against the deeper teams.

Number 6 seed Prairie Centre (8-17-0) is led by Junior sniper Eli Fletcher who has over 40 goals on the year however the Northstars are not able to offer much of a threat beyond him.

Number 7 seed Willmar (5-19-0) is another team that has struggled with depth and consistency over the past few years. Sophomore leading scorer Cullen Gregory does offer hope for the future though in a once proud program.

Number 8 seed Breckenridge/Wahpeton (0-20-0) has had an incredibly tough year and is looking like it will finish out the season without securing a win.

Alexandria is on a nine game unbeaten streak. Hopefully last night's tie with Brainerd will help them focus heading into the playoffs.

Alexandria plays to the level of their opponent they fall behind to team like Willmar and squeak out wins vs Sauk Rapids and tie 5 win Brainerd. Yet, they also can play Gentry to the wire and beat top level teams like Little Falls and be on the current 9 game win streak. However during that win streak they have been flirting with danger like falling behind 3-0 to Willmar, Hanging on to win 2-1 over Sauk, being tied 4-4 late to Northern Lakes, hanging on for dear life to beat st cloud 5-4 after leading 5-2 in the 2nd, etc. I will give them credit though they win.

The good thing for the Cards is that they have played probably their two most complete games of the year vs. Fergus but it will be tough to beat the Otters 3 times in one year but they seem to play their best against their 6A Rival.

Section 6A Playoffs Quarterfinal Games (2/22/2022)

#8 seed Breckenridge/Wahpeton (0-20-0) vs #1 seed Alexandria (16-6-2) @ Runestone Community Center, Alex, MN
This one looks like a mismatch on paper as Alexandria will be entering the Section 6A Playoffs on a nine game unbeaten streak while Breckenridge/Wahpeton is still in search of its season's first win. The Blades are a young and undersized team and they will have all sorts of issues matching up with the size and depth of the Cardinals. Alexandria’s Gronholz & Berg are seniors on a mission it seems and they have both been superb during their late season unbeaten run.

#5 seed Morris Benson (13-11-1) vs #4 seed Wadena Deer Creek (14-11-0) @ Wadena Community Center, Wadena, MN
Wadena Deer Creek swept the regular season series between these two 6A teams but the second game was closer than that first. The Wolverines Junior forward Aron Sutherland had a big impact during the regular season series as he had 5 points. Morris Besnon will need to get a much better night in the net from Sophomore goaltender Christopher Danielson who struggled in the regular season series going (0-2-0, .827 SV%, 5.00 GAA) against WDC. This should be the best of the Quarterfinal games in Section 6A.

#6 seed Prairie Centre (8-17-0) vs #3 seed Northern Lakes (14-11-0) @ Breezy Point Ice Arena, Breezy Point, MN
Northern Lakes swept the season series against Prairie Centre however, the first meeting did go into overtime to show that the Northstars can be a factor in this game. For Prairie Centre to have an upset big they will need another big night from Junior sniper Eli Fletcher who had a big 5 point night vs the Lightning the first time around in a game they led 5-3 after two periods before letting Northern Lakes sneak out the win in the OT. Northern Lakes needed a big third period 6 goal outburst to break open a tie game the second time around and they will lean on their Senior leading scorer Tyler Seeling who had 2 goals in each game. This one looks to be another good quarterfinal math up in Section 6A.

#7 seed Willmar (5-20-0) vs #2 seed Fergus Falls (16-9-0) @ Fergus Falls Ice Arena, Fergus Falls, MN
This is another first round matchup that doesn't look good on paper. The Otters destroyed Willmar in their two games this year as they outscored the Cardinals 19-0 in the season series. For Willmar getting on the scoreboard would be a big accomplishment and for Fergus Falls it's coming out and establishing their game early and not allowing the Cardinals to have any moments of hope. Micheal DeBrito and Issac Johnson had big nights the first two times around and Fergus Falls will look to maintain that formula as the third time around in their Section 6A Quarterfinal.

Section 6A Playoffs Quarterfinal Games (2/23/2022 & 2/24/2022) Recaps

Alexandria 19 Breckenridge/Wahpeton 0
Alexandria jumped out to 12-0 after 1 period and was able to cruise from there. Alexandria’s top line of Brycen Berg, Tyler Kludt & Josiah Gronholz was buzzing in this one as those three had a staggering 14 points between the 3 of them. The Cars outshot the outmanned Blades 60-1 and Alexandria will move on to the Section 6A Semifinal round.

Morris Benson 5 Wadena Deer Creek 4 OT
Morris Benson and Wadena Deer Creek played a spirited back and forth 4 vs 5 game in the Section 6A Quarterfinals. The game was tied multiple times. Morris Benson’s Trevor Buss had a huge 3 point night and Brett Hansen picked up the game winning goal in OT to put Morris Benson in the Section 6A Semifinals.

Northern Lakes 7 Prairie Centre 0
Northern Lakes used a big six goal second period to blow open the game against visiting Prairie Centre. Sophomore forward Taylor Berg had a hat trick and Sophomore goaltender Nigel DeSanto recorded the shutout as the Lightning cruised to the win over the North Stars. Now they will head to St. Cloud to take on the Otters in the Section 6A Semifinals.

Fergus Falls 8 Willmar 0
Fergus Falls continued its domination of Willmar on the year as they scored 3 goals in each of the first two periods and they cruised to a big 8-0 win. The Otters got a big 4 goal night from Isaac Johnson and that is all goalie Ben Swanson would need as he picked up the shutout win in net. Fergus Falls will now head to the MAC in St Cloud for the Section 6A Semifinals.

Section 6A Playoffs Semifinal Games (2/26/2022)

#5 seed Morris Benson (14-11-1) vs #1 seed Alexandria (17-6-1) @ MAC Arena, St. Cloud, MN

This one looks like a huge mismatch again on paper with Alexandria looking like the heavy favorite. For Morris Benson to have a chance they will need to get seniors Brady DeHaan & Brett Hansen along with juniors Ryan Tolifson & Trevor Buss best games as they are really all the Storm have for scoring. Alexandria’s top line of Brycen Berg, Tyler Kludt & Josiah Gronholz has really been clicking of late and will be very tough for MBA to match up with. Add in the huge depth advantage that the Cardinals have and this one could be another runtime game. The winner will move on to the Section 6A Championship next week

#3 seed Northern Lakes (15-11-0) vs #2 seed Fergus Falls (17-9-0) @ MAC Arena, St. Cloud, MN
The nightcap matchup between Fergus Falls and Northern Lakes could get interesting. These teams met way back in November and the Otters used a big three goal third period to blow open a tie game. Since then Northern Lakes has had a few players leave the team but has really gotten some depth as Sophomores Logan Verville & Taylor Berg have really developed and give the Lighting a solid two line attack. Fergus Falls on the other hand has had an up and down season but they still are a veteran group that is led by Senior Micheal DeBrito and Junior Issac Johnson up front. The Otters are well coached and Ben Swanson could be the difference if he can find his form that he showed last year during a superb sophomore campaign in the net. I think this will be a close one but the Otters look like they have just a little bit more and they still are my pick to represent 6A in two weeks.

Great Content RosevilleDad! This one could get interesting as the Lightning have a strong group of Sophomores that got steadily better throughout the season. However, like you showed going (3-9-0) against the better half of their schedule does not bold well. Fergus Falls has the better team here but again I think this one will be interesting as Nothern Lakes showed when they were tied 4-4 late with Alex about 2 weeks ago they can hang around with the 6A's Top Teams. Playing at the MAC always is a wildcard as well. I just think the Otters know this is the group if there ever was one that can break through as Alex and Nothern lakes both have been humming in the youth levels. Add to that there is still a few Otters with the bad taste of last year double OT loss to Little Falls. Northern Lakes does return players with State Tournament experience the X factor will be Goaltending I like Swanson for Fergus Falls and DeSanto as been hot and cold in the bigger games. i think this one will be close but I see the Otters pulling out a Section win.

Should be a good one. I wish it was streamed but I know the MAC is brutal about that so will have to listen and watch social media for updates!

The Northern Lakes vs. Fergus Falls game tomorrow night (7:00) will be on the radio (977 FM), just type in 977 FM Fergus Falls and people can listen online. Other playoff games from the MAC in Saint Cloud have been on LiveBarn this year, so that be might be an option also.

Section 6A Playoffs Semifinal Games (2/26/2022) Recaps

Alexandria 10 Morris Benson 2
The beginning of to massacres at the MAC started with Alexandria giving Morris Benson a glimmer of hope with the Storm’s Brady DeHaan scored midway through the 2nd period to make it a very surprising 3-2 game given the talent gap between the two teams, However, Alexandria decided to kick into gear after that and they easily scored 7 unanswered goals behind Joseph Lamski and Gavin Olson’s multiple goal nights to cruise to semifinal win. Alexandria will now get ready for the Otters for a third time in the Section 6A Final.

Fergus Falls 10 Northern Lakes 5
The Otters had some adventures of their own in the second of the massacres at the MAC as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the 2nd period and should have cruised from there. Instead they let Northern Lakes score the 3 and by the time Lightning forward Tyler Seeling had finished scoring back to back goals it was suddenly a 5-4 game. The Otters though behead the huge offensive nights of Issac Johnson and Carter Thielke were able to stretch the lead back out quickly and before you knew we had the second 10 goal game and runtime affair in the third of some ugly semifinals in very light as far as depth goes Section 6A playoff grouping.

Section 6A Playoffs Championship Game (3/3/2022)

#2 seed Fergus Falls (18-9-0) vs #1 seed Alexandria (18-6-2) @ MAC Arena, St. Cloud, MN
Alexandria and Fergus Falls have outscored their Section 6A opponents 47-7 combined in the first two rounds to show really there was no one else even close to these two teams in Section 6A this winter. Now they face off for the third time and so far in the season series Alexandria has dominated the Otters putting together their two most complete wins jumping out to leads in both games and really controlling the game. However, the Otters will get one more shot and they have a group that has Section Final experience where for the majority of the Cardinals they have not played in this game due to missing it a year ago and limited number of Seniors playing in it while they were Sophomores. A key to this game will be we know the Top line of Alexandria’s Brycen Berg, Tyler Kludt & Josiah Gronholz vs Fergus Falls Isaac Johnson, Carter Thielke & Cole Zierden are both coming in on fire through two playoff games but it will be the secondary scoring players like Micheal DeBrito for Fergus and Joseph Lamski for Alex how they can produce. Another key will be Fergus trying to take a lead, something they haven't done to Alex yet. I think this will be a great game. I know Alexandria has owned the Otters twice but in a 1 and done winner gets everything you gotta think the Otters have at least one game in them where they can beat the Cardinals. Will it be on Thursday night with a trip to St Paul on the line?

The Cardinals opened the scoring with a goal by Leonard Kompelien with 31 seconds left in the first. The Otters tied the score with a goal by Michael DeBrito early in the second.
