2022 Class A QF #1 seed 7A Hermantown (26-2-0) vs 1A New Prague (11-15-2)

#1 seed 7A Champion Hermantown (26-2-0) vs 1A Champion New Prague (11-15-2) Class A QF @ Xcel Energy Center

Section 7A Champions- Hermantown Hawks (26-2-0)
Section 7A Playoff Results- W 13-0 #8 seed North Shore, W 6-0 #5 seed Greenway, W 11-0 #2 seed Duluth Denfeld

Meet the Hawks-
Hermantown comes into the State Tournament having made a mockery of the Section 7A Playoffs which they outscored their opponents by a combined 30-0 margin. They enter St Paul as again the favorite in Class A a place that Coach Andrews has had his squad the previous 5 years he has been behind the bench but will this finally be the group that has so much superior talent that they can win him his first Class A Title? All signs point to yes as if there was a question coming into the year it would have been goaltending and a key transfer from Duluth East answered that question as Sophomore Dane Callaway (17-2-0 .921 SV% 1.48 GAA) has been magnificent in the net. They have three thoroughbred defenders in Senior Beau Janzig (7-17-24 pts.) and Juniors Ty Hanson (14-28-42 pts) & George Petrson (10-12-22 pts.). They also feature on the state’s top lines regardless of Class as the Plante brothers, Junior Zam (20-35-55 pts.) & Sophomore Max (16-50-66 pts.), along with Junior Kade Kohanski (20-33-53 pts.) are enough to give any opposition fits. This Hawk group though can throw out the likes of Seniors Gavin Blomdahl (10-16-26 pts) & Dominic Thomas (11-11-22 pts) , Junior Wyatt Carlson (17-13-30 pts) & Sophomore Dallas Vieau (16-11-27 pts.) as part of the supporting cast and it just makes them so difficult to match up with for any Class A team. This group looks to be the favorite as we get ready for the Class A Tourney to Start and the crazy thing is if they all stick around next year’s Hawk group will be even better then this year’s version.

vs.

Section 1A Champions- New Prague Trojans (11-15-2)
Section 1A Playoff Results- W 7-1 #4 seed Faribault, W 3-2 OT #1 seed Northfield, W 5-2 #3 seed Albert Lea

Meet the Trojans-
Well rather the state or the MSHSL wanted them the Trojans have arrived at the X representing Section 1A. After a 6 year stint of getting throttled in the first round year after year by Section 2AA teams New Prague was able to get back down into Class A due to a number change in the enrollment cutoff and boy did that move pay off for them. While they still struggled mightily during the regular season finishing in the bottom of Metro West Conference they were able to garner a #4 seed in 1A. They did make news during the regular season but for all the wrong reasons and this will not be a program that is going to capture anyone’s heart at State but regardless they are here. The key to their team's success is in the net where veteran Senior Goaltender Carter Peuente (10-11-1 .911 SV% 3.14 GAA) has been steady all year. He will face a ton of rubber at State so New Prague will need him to be on top of his game. On the blueline, Senior Defenseman Ryan Brinkhaus (3-2-25 pts.) uses his physical style of play to lead the group from the back end. Up front is mixture of Underclassmen and Seniors as Junior John Schmidt (10-16-26 pts.) leads the team in points while Sophomore Willy Seymour & Freshman Luke Portner have each chipped in 21 points of their own. But it has been their Senior duo of Will Andersen (9-16-25 pts.) and Charlie Turnberg (9-6-17 pts) who have led the way in the playoffs scoring the big goals when the team needed them the most. They enter state as the lowest rated team and with losses to teams like Waconia and Kennedy during the season on their resume they will struggle mightily to keep up with any of the top 3 seeds they draw at State.

#1 seed 7A Champion Hermantown (26-2-0) vs 1A Champion New Prague (11-15-2) Class A QF @ Xcel Energy Center
The third game of the day on prime time tv will be an ugly between the two most controversial teams in Class A this season. Not much of an interest from a fan perspective here as both teams come to St Paul with some not well received fan fare. New Prague made headlines late in the year for all the wrong reasons but they did benefit from a weak Section 1A and were able to beat Top 10 Northfield to get here so they earned it. However they will need Senior goaltender Carter Peuente (10-11-1 .911 SV% 3.14 GAA) to be outstanding just to keep this game somewhat competitive on the scoreboard. Look for the Hawks to get off to a fast start and their top line of the Plante brothers, Junior Zam (20-35-55 pts.) & Sophomore Max (16-50-66 pts.), along with Junior Kade Kohanski (20-33-53 pts.) will shine. The Hawks will be in cruise control in this one and I don't think many will feel bad for New Prague and not much else to really say about this one.

My Pick- Hermantown in a rout this one will be ugly

I would like to think those around this team were not part of the ugliness.
And I hope the crowd does not react negatively toward the team.

On the ice it hard to believe this will not be running time.

Agreed Elliott

I think what has people fired up is that the incident happened at Boys Hockey game specifically this was a excerpt from the local media.

The St. Louis Park High School athletic director has sent a letter to the New Prague activities director stating his school would no longer compete with New Prague High School after a “racist experience” last week. Athletic Director Andrew Ewald said in his letter Monday that racist behavior was directed at the St. Louis Park boys hockey team during a game on Feb. 15. He said his decision to cut ties with New Prague was also influenced by more allegations of racism against another school in the Metro West Conference.

I think due it happening actually at Boys Hockey game it brings more attention to that program. Again I dunno if it was Hockey players or parents but it was New Prague Hockey fans making them a target.

I have a direct source to the person involved in the story. It was two NP players, during the game, making inappropriate comments towards the SLP player. Afterwards, one player admitted to it and the other denied it.

I can also confirm that New Prague parents and coaches have a habit of being complete nut job dbags as well. Sure, there are tons in all corners of the state and not all from NP should be labeled this way, but I also have first hand experience with NP parents/fans/coaches where their behavior was downright disgusting…

From Karl (East) as we get ready for the Night games of Class A

NEW PRAGUE VS. #1 HERMANTOWN

This one likely won’t be very pretty. Hermantown won a 2014 semifinal between these two by a 4-2 margin.

New Prague (11-15-2, Unranked, 4-seed in 1A)

State appearances: 3 (last in 2015)

Key section wins: 3-2 (2 OT) over #7 Northfield, 5-3 over 3-seed Albert Lea

The Trojans shocked 1A with an upset of top-seeded Northfield in the section semifinals, and while the record is ugly, they did play a significantly harder schedule than the rest of the section.

It’s a committee effort offensively, with John Schmidt (27) and Will Andersen (18) pacing the scoring pace and some younger talent, including freshman Luke Portner (3) and sophomore Willy Seymour (10) on their heels and looking to build this team for the future. The forwards carry pretty much the entire offensive load.

Carter Puente (30) has put up solid numbers considering the amount of pressure he’s seen in goal, and the Spartans will need all of that and more to keep this one close.

Hermantown (27-2, #1, 1-seed in 7A)

State appearances: 18 (3 in a row)

Championships: 3 (2007, 2016, 2017)

Key section win: 11-0 over #8 Duluth Denfeld

It’s no surprise to see the Hawks here, though this may be their best team yet, at least when it comes to high-end skill.

Zam Plante (27) may be the best player in the Tourney in either class, though younger brother Max (26) is not far behind. They have impressive depth, with Dallas Vieau (24) also showing D-I potential, Kade Kohanski (11) sharing a line with the Plantes, and Wyatt Carlson (4) casually putting up 30 points for this team, which has a 41% power play.

On defense, Ty Hanson (2) is yet another Hawk UMD commit and can act like a fourth forward, while Beau Janzig (13) add a necessary dose of heaviness and senior steadiness.

Sophomore Dane Callaway (32) has won the goaltending job and may be the most skilled netminder the Hawks have had since they started their run of dominance in Class A. They should waltz into the final, where, barring a major surprise, a rematch of a 2-1 overtime regular season thriller with Warroad will occur.

Do they do running time in the first period or only the 3rd? Either way, second game is going to be on time...

As someone who rarely comes on this site and also doesn’t have the time to read 78 pages of the Hermantown thread… what have they said as a program as to why they stay down at A? Anything? I’m at the game and they do not belong here at all (which I’m sure has been said in that thread a million times). Also looking at their results this year I think that confirms it. Someone at the MSHSL needs to grow a pair and just tell them sorry you’re moving up

What a Joke. I’m well aware it’s a running theme of the Hawks still being in A, and kids get excited to score at the X but the celly’s against a team that isn’t on the same planet are ridiculous. Play AA like you do all season. SMH

Many years ago, I watched Centennial hang 20+ on some teams. Would take no issue with Hermantown going full throttle the whole 51 minutes, and doing the same.

In a nutshell, Bruce Plante used to say "We're all hometown kids, we belong in A."

Now, all you hear is "We're not breaking any rules."

Lol, ok guy.
Lemme guess, you from New Prague? Coach Lonke would’ve had none of what’s gone on down there. Sure, not all of the kids on this team deserve to be labeled as bad, but much like some have hate for HTown, I could care less if New Prague gets throttled here.
