Section 1A Outlook- Northfield is unbeaten and a lock for the 1 seed in 1A. New Prague & Albert Lea both only have 1 loss in 1A to NFLD and will be an interesting coaches vote for the 2 and 3 seed. Dodge County only has 1A loss to NP and wins over the teams below them for the 4 seed. La Crescent beat Faribault head to head for the 5 over 6. The Falcons beat Rochester Lourdes head to head for 6 over 7 but Lourdes still has a game with the Lancers. Winona has wins over Waseca & Austin and two ties with Red Wing for the 8 seed over them. As QRF would do for Playoffs it would take into account Head to head when its Close La Crescent beat Faribo to flip that and Austin beat Red Wing to flip and,.... You get exactly what I have above.

Yes, head to head IF they are within a certain point spread apart and of course that will not be known until the season is over.

Still some shake up but looks likefor right now we are the exact same page

Section 1A Seeding Outlook- Northfield is the lock for the 1A #1 seed as they are unbeaten in the section. New Prague due to a tougher schedule and being defending 1A Champions I believe gets them the nod at the #2 seed over Albert Lea who will be the #3 seed. The 2nd game between Dodge County & La Crescent winner this week will determine home ice of the #4 vs #5 Quarterfinal Game. Seed #6, #7 and #8 will be interesting Winona has a winning 1A record and won the head to head over the Lancers and Faribault which I think gets them the #6 seed. The Falcons own head to head win over Rochester Lourdes but the Eagles own the head to head win over the Winhawks so the coaches vote will be interesting here. Waseca’s only two 1A wins were over Austin & Red Wing and the Packers beat and tied the Wingers to set seeds #9, #10 and #11.

Section 1A Seeds
1- Northfield (20-5-0)
2- New Prague (14-10-1)
3- Albert Lea (18-6-1)
4- Dodge County (15-9-0)
5- La Crescent (18-7-0)
6- Winona (9-13-2)
7- Faribault (11-13-0)
8- Rochester Lourdes (9-16-0)
9- Waseca (10-14-0)
10- Austin (4-19-1)
11- Red Wing (1-20-4)

Section 1A Playoff Preview- A year ago at the Rochester Rec Center the then heavy 1A favorite and #1 seed Northfield Raiders led 2–0 after two periods and were outshooting the #4 seed New Prague Trojans 28-15 and seemed on their way to the Section Final. However, with under 7 minutes to play in the game the Trojans made a stunning comeback scoring twice in regulation to tie the game and then carried the momentum into the overtime to pull one of the bigger Class A Section upsets of last winter. Fast forward a year later in the storyline could be presenting itself again in case of deja vu or will we see a group of angry Raiders get their long awaited redemption for last year's section 1A shocker?

The Favorite- Northfield again is the favorite in 1A and since the beginning of season has been on the “Raiders Redemption Tour” having gone unbeaten in the section, including two shutout wins over top contenders New Prague & Albert Lea. Shutouts have been common as Sr. Goaltender Keaton Warlock has been outstanding in the nets. Defensively they are led by Sr. Mike Fossum & Jr. Ty Frank who both have close to 30 points on the year from the back end. Up front they sport one of the best lines in Class A as the top line of Jr.'s Cayden Monson, Jake Geiger & Kamden Kaiser have been outstanding all winter.

The Challengers- The two teams that played in the 1A Section Final last winter appear to be the top contenders as both have been very good again this winter. Starting with the defending Section 1A Champion New Prague who has been steadily improving playing a tough AA filled schedule all winter. Finding a goaltender has been a question mark as the Trojans have rotated starts between three players much of the winter. They do have some good scoring punch through as Sr. John Schmidt leads the way and they have a nice core of Jr.’s Will Seymour, Braeden Woitas, Michael Beckius & Eric Berg who all have double digit goals and are over 20 points on the season to present a lineup with good depth. The Trojans looked primed to make another run through Section 1A and return to State this winter.

Albert Lea, the other section finalist from a year ago, is often overlooked when talking about Section 1A. It would be a mistake to not consider the Tigers contenders as they have a veteran senior lead group. Goaltender Sr. Dakota Jahnke has returned to the net this year and will be looking for his own redemption as he missed last year's playoffs due to injury. Albert Lea features one of the sections’ best overall players in Sr. Joseph Yoon who has over 25 goals and nearly 60 points on the year and is a threat to take over any game he plays in. They have scoring depth also as Sr.'s Jack Ladlie, Tim Chalmers, Max Edwin Jr. Eli Farris & Soph. Connor Pirsig all have double digit goals on the year and Albert Lea will be playing with their own sense of urgency to make up for coming just short of State last year.

The Dark Horses- A few sneaky darkhouses exist in 1A do exist and one is Dodge County, who the last time they were in 1A they went to the Class A Title game. While Bordy Lamb has moved on to the Gophers they do have two elite scores in Jr. Gryffon Funke & Soph. Brett Ludvigsen who both have over 40 points this winter and could take the Wildcats on run in sections. La Crescent is another team having a wonderful year having won 18 games and while the competition may not be the same as the teams above Jr. Wyatt Farrell is a serious talent scoring over 50 goals on the year and Lancers will be looking to get back to the Section Semis like they did in 2021, which was their first ever appearance in school history.

Section Scaries- Section 1A does have a few teams that could produce a section Quarter Final upset. Faribault has been up and down on the year but has shown in two tight one goal losses to top contenders New Prague and Albert Lea that on any given night they could be dangerous. Jr. Oliver Linnemann leads a very young Falcon team with over 40 points on the year. Winona is another team that while the record is not pretty has shown at times they can put a scare into teams as Jr. Teis Larsen is one of the Section best players and has well over 50 points on the year. The other team would be Rochester Lourdes who has been plagued by the injury bug but they do have one of the sections top goaltenders in Jr. Xander Carter-Kleven who can stop 50-60 shots on any given night and create panic for the top seed.

The Rest- Waseca has Sr.’s Griffen Krautkramer & Kyle Ahlschlager who each have 20 goals on the year and if they get hot could put some fear into some of Section 1A’s best. Austin will have optimism for the future as while it's been another rough year Sophomore Gahvin Schaefer has been very productive and has double digit goals for the winter. Red Wing has struggled this winter but does have 4 ties and will look to build with many returners coming back next winter.

1A Playoff Recap #1

Section 1A- #6 seed Winona was able to shutout #11 seed Red Wing and pick up the playoff win in their last home game of the year. Junior Teis Larsen was the star of the game as he had 3 goals and 1 assist for the 4 point night which gives 64 points on the year (32 goals & 32 Assists). The Winhawks will now head to #3 seed Albert Lea who defeated them 5-2 at the beginning of February. #7 seed Faribault rolled to a big 7-1 win over #10 seed Austin. The Falcons snapped a 3 game skid with the win and they now head to #2 seed New Prague who they played very tight earlier this year in a 4-3 loss where Trojans scored the game winning goal with just 1 minute to go late in the third period to pull out the win. The most entertaining game in Section 1A took place at Graham Arena where #8 seed Rochester Lourdes was able to defeat #9 seed Waseca. In a back and forth game that saw numerous lead changes, Lourdes scored to take a 4-3 lead with 2:20 remaining in the third period, putting the Eagles up 4-3. The Bluejays tied it with :34.3 left, only to see Lourdes Sophomore Colton Rich play hero and score the game winner with just :01.7 left. The Eagles will not head to face #1 seed Northfield next.

Section 1A Playoffs
Friday February 24th
Section 1A Quarterfinals

#1 Northfield 8 #8 Rochester Lourdes 1
#4 Dodge County 4 #5 La Crescent 3 OT
#2 New Prague 2 #7 Faribault 0
#3 Albert Leas 4 #6 Winona 1

Section 1A- #1 seed Northfield took the #8 seed Rochester Lourdes out of the game early as they jumped on the Eagles to build a quick three goal lead. The Raiders Junior Jake Geiger had the big night as his 5 point night (3 goals & 2 assists) helped Northfield cruise into the 1A Semifinals. They will play #4 seed Dodge County who won a overtime classic over #5 seed La Crescent in a game that saw the Wildcats jump out in front twice only to see the Lancers battle back to tie it. It was Junior Gryffon Funke who scored the game winner in overtime and they will now have a quick turnaround with an 11:30 AM puck drop at Rochester Rec Center tomorrow. On the other side of the bracket #2 seed New Prague struggled putting #7 seed Faribault away. They were able to get two third period insurance goals which in the end they didn't need as goaltender Sophomore Cole Murphy got the shutout playoff win. They will take on #3 seed Albert Lea who took down #6 seed Winona 4-1 in a close hockey game that were able to break open in the third period. The Tigers will meet the Trojans in the 2:00 PM game of the 1A Semifinals tomorrow at the Rochester Rec Center.

Section 1A Playoffs
Saturday February 25th
Section 1A Semifinals

#1 Northfield 6 #4 Dodge County 1
#2 New Prague 7 #3 Albert Lea 5

Section 1A- #1 seed Northfield did not mess around with being upset again the 1A Semifinals this winter as they jumped all over #4 seed Dodge County in a game where they outshot the Wildcats 63-13. The Raiders controlled the play throughout as their speed and depth were too much for the Wildcats to handle. The Raiders Sophomore Will Cashin scored a 2nd period hat trick to propel them into th Section 1A Championship Game. They will take on #2 seed New Prague who won an excellent hockey game over #3 seed Albert Lea. In a back in forth game that saw neither team lead by more than one goal until the ending empty net goal. It was the Trojans Junior Will Seymour who was the hero as he scored the game winner goal with just 24 second left in the game after Tigers Senior Joseph Yoon hit the post to win the game just moments before. The Trojans will look to defend their 1A title when they take on the Raiders on Wednesday Night March 1st at Rochester Rec Center.

At the end of the New Prague/Albert Lea game…..which in the last 45 seconds of a 5-5 game went from the thrill of victory to the agony of defeat. The New Prague Twitter page captures the situation pretty darn well……after shaking hands the Albert Lea players gather in the center ice circle and take a knee. New Prague players who were celebrating nearby took notice and joined the Tigers taking a knee at center ice. The arena fell silent as everyone was watching. Nearly as one all the players stood up together and patted each other on the back and skated off together. The crowd gave the players a huge round of applause.

What goes on at center ice I can probably guess but don’t know. As an old curmudgeon who can complain about the younger generation, I also have to say when they impress me beyond my comprehension. What a bunch of good young men. Their parents, coaches, teammates, and schools should be very proud.
