I agree that SCC is the best team in this section but they have 2 games with Little Falls and 1 game with Monticello that are must wins. Team in full control of 1 seed is Cambridge need to beat Monticello the second for spilt, own the head to head over Cathedral, RL, PC, Princeton, and if they can beat LF will be 1 seed. Lots of games yet but Like the Crusaders at 1 as they look the best of late.

Section 5A Seeding Outlook- Little Falls is the lock at the #1 seed as they went unbeaten in Section 5A during the year. Monticello, Cambridge Isanti & St Cloud Cathedral are the #2-#4 seeds. It's still messy on the order as the Moose and Crusaders game this week could change the order yet or it still may stay the same due to Crusaders loss to Bluejackets who the Moose swept. Princeton is the #5 seed due to their head to head win over River Lakes who is the #6 seed with their win over Pine City who is #7 seed. I thought it was 10% of the average QRF which would trigger whatever tie-breakers they use. That was the only part of QRF I agreed with, to the point where it triggered a "Hey! If memory serves me, the QRF value that they look at ranges between 3 and 5 (they have a formula) which head to head or head-head-head comes into play.
In this section (as of now) there would be a lot of that to come into play.

Section 5A Playoff Preview- One of the better Class A Sectionals appears to be happening in Section 5A this winter where there are 4 to 5 teams that legitimately could have the ability to win this section. As we learned last year when the 3 seed played 4 seed for the Section Title in a classic game the teams at the top are very close. The top four appear to be the same as they were last year and even though the Semis in Section 5A are the only ones in the state that play at the high seed it didn't seem to matter last year when both top seeds were upset at home. Central Minnesota is often overlooked when it comes to hockey but Section 5A should give us some very entertaining and close games over the next two weeks.
The Favorite- Little Falls the Flyers come into the playoffs playing some of their best hockey of the year as they went (10-1-0) in their last 11 games. Two major things happened that could be seen as turning points in the Little Falls season. The first was the emergence of 9th grade Goalie Izaak Kalis who took over the starting gig due to injury and all he has done since is win and be very solid in net. The other was moving Sophomore Joey Welinski back to the top line with Senior Matt Filippi & Junior Carter Oothoudt and that line has been lethal of late. Senior defenders Coltin Johnson & Matthew Copper each play mega minutes on the blue line and Sophomore Luke Avery converting back to defense this year has been huge for this team who is looking to make amends for getting upset as the #1 seed a year ago in Section 5A.
The Challengers- St Cloud Cathedral brought a ton of talent back from last year's Section runner up team but has really struggled late in the year. However, much like last year the Crusaders would be a very good bet to win Section 5A. They have an explosive 1st line led by Sophomores John Hirschfeld & Joey Gillespie who along with Junior Andrew Dwinnell will be tough for any Section 5A team to handle. They have a super silky smooth defender in youngster 9th grader Griffin Sturm who is their top defender. However, the reason Cathedral would be a good beat to win 5A, I believe, is in the net as Junior Nick Hansen has been rock solid in the net and he led his team last year to Section Final before coming up just short.
Monticello, the defending Section 5A champion, much like last year, appears to be being overlooked again this winter and as we found out last year never count out the Moose. Coach Eric Nelson is the Section’s best and he has guided his teams to multiple Section 5A championships and looks to have this current group playing their best hockey right now. Monticello uses plenty of depth as Seniors Tyler Miller, Tyler Bitz, Jake Larsen & Brayden Dunn along with Juniors Roman Thompson & Gunnar Simon give them experience and balance as all have 20 points or more on the year. Add in goaltender Junior Owen Soderholm who has been very good this year in the starting role and the Moose have all the ingredients for another deep playoff run.
The Dark Horse- Cambridge the Bluejackets have put together another quality year and have the talent needed to win 5A. They showed in the upset win over Cathedral earlier in the year that on any given night this is a team to fear in 5A. Their three leading scorers Juniors Finn Overby & Will O'Donovan along with Senior Seth Terhell all have over 30 points on the year and are dangerous whenever they take the ice. In net, Sophomore Jaxon Sibell is capable of leading a State Tournament run. Would not be shocked at all to see the Bluejacket be the team to represent 5A in two weeks at State.
Section Scaries- River Lakes will be a dangerous low seed for any of the top seeds to draw in the first round as Seniors Jacob Philippi & Brady Blaschko and Sophomore Blake Schultz are a potent trio and they are playing their best hockey late in the year. Princeton is another scary team for teams to draw as Seniors Jake Patnode, Jake Baumann, Tim Donnay along with Sophomores Brody Kok & Lane Olson all have double digit goals on the year and could give a first round opponent trouble.
The Rest- Pine City is led by 9th grader McCall Leger & Senior Ryder Youngbauer who could cause teams trouble. Sauk Rapids is a team that had injuries early but is playing their best hockey now and Junior Teagan Dodge is a major threat for the Storm. Becker/Big Lake the Eagles have had one of their best seasons in a long time as Senior Eli Scheideman & Juniors Brayden Graning & Jase Tobako have all had big years. Mora the Mustangs are a young team but Junior Trenton Fore has been excellent again from the blueline as they rebuild around him.

5A Playoff Recap #1
Section 5A-#1 seed Little Falls picked up the playoff win but looked like a team that had not played a game in over 10 days. While the Flyers were able to win it was not pretty as #8 seed Sauk Rapids peppered goaltender 9th grader Izaak Kalis who stopped 39 of 41 shots to get the win. In the other game on the top side of the 5A Bracket #4 seed Cambridge Isanti used Junior Will O'Donovan hat track to build a big lead over #5 seed Princeton as the Bluejackets were able to end their longtime rivals season for the second consecutive year. In bottom end of the 5A bracket #3 seed St. Cloud Cathedral cruised to shutout win over shorthanded #6 seed River Lakes who was missing their top player and leading scorer Senior Jacob Philippi whose absence was felt in a punchless offense effort. Crusaders star Sophomore John Hirschfeld led the way with a big 4 point (3 goals & 1 assist) as they advanced to the 5A semifinals. They play at #2 seed Monticello who survived a serious upset scare from #7 seed Pine City. The Moose were able to score a late 2nd period goal to take a 2-1 lead and hang on for the win from there against the upset minded Dragons.

In bottom end of the 5A bracket #3 seed St. Cloud Cathedral cruised to shutout win over shorthanded #6 seed River Lakes who was missing their top player and leading scorer Senior Jacob Philippi whose absence was felt in a punchless offense effort. Crusaders star Sophomore John Hirschfeld led the way with a big 4 point (3 goals & 1 assist) as they advanced to the 5A semifinals. They play at #2 seed Monticello who survived a serious upset scare from #7 seed Pine City. The Moose were able to score a late 2nd period goal to take a 2-1 lead and hang on for the win from there against the upset minded Dragons.
