Wallace C. Odell


Odell, Wallace C. age 94, formerly of Elk River, MN, died Sunday, February 25, 2018. Memorial Service Sunday, March 4, 2:00 PM at the Moravian Church, 115 E. 4th St., Chaska. A private family burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chaska. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Wally was born January 9, 1924, in Chaska to William and Ida (Blair) Odell. One of six children, he grew up with lots of DuToit, Klammer, Flink and Ottinger cousins. Graduating in 1941 from Chaska High School, he attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served in the 884th Field Artillery of the 70th Infantry Division, the Trailblazers, for 2 1/2 years during World War II seeing combat in Europe in 1945. After being discharged in February 1946, Wally headed back to Westminster College and arrived in time to hear Winston Churchill give his famed Iron Curtain Speech. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a law degree in 1950 and practiced law for over twenty years before changing his career to commercial real estate. Wally worked with Darkenwald Realty for many years before finally retiring in January, 2016, at the age of 92. His other passion was youth and amateur hockey. He began volunteering his time in the early 1960s with the Minnetonka and Wayzata Youth Hockey Associations. He worked his way up in the MAHA/Minnesota Hockey and AHAUS/USA Hockey organizations and was recognized many times for his commitment to the development of youth hockey players. He is survived by his five children, Susan (Wesley) Sund, Judith (Richard) Poe, David Odell, John (Erin) Odell and Robert (Bridget) Odell; by eight grandchildren, David and Laura Sund, Meredith (Dustin) Fenley and Elizabeth Poe, Charles and Marissa Odell, Keegan and Kaitlin Odell; by three great grandchildren, Eliza, Clayton and Bennett Fenley; and by his brother David (Patty) Odell. He was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers, William, George and Richard, and his sister Ruth Bruhn. Bertas Funeral Home, Chaska (bertasfh.com)
