elite classic, selects, super series

Post by dereu » Sat Jan 28, 2006 12:29 am

are these tournaments truly "elite" - "super" & "selective" and why does a summer tournament cost around $1200.00 and a winter tournament cost only $500.00. oh, where do the proceeds from the elite classic tournament go and where do the proceeds from the select tournament go (I believe the proceeds from the super series benefit the "blades" org.)

First, those end of the year tournaments are meant to gather several good quality players from different areas and have some fun playing a N,S,E,W tournament...it is not necessarily the best players (they may be busy or out of town etc.) but it does include a lot of very good players. Most coaches who are in charge of organizing their area team want to win so they try and get the best players they can find from the area they can select from (they usually have areas, teams or Districts assigned to select from).

Second, summer tournaments do NOT have gate fees for any fans who want to watch because they build it in to their tourney entry price ($1200.00). Winter tournaments usually collect a gate fee and charge the smaller tournament entry fee ($500.00). Many have talked about trying the higher fee in the winter but, with so many tournaments to choose from, no one wants to risk scaring teams away from their tournament.

I agree with the previous summary on the quality of players of these tournaments but the main reason for a 1200.00 fee versus a 500 fee is strictly for the host club can make some serious money. Typically if a winter tournament doesnt have a gate fee they will raise the entry to 675-700.

Most of the Blades players play in the Super Series tournament since it is basically a fundraiser for the Blades organization, so it usually draws good talent.

I played in Selects for four years, last years festival being my final one. From what I saw and playing in it the talent level did drop. Oh and Lapic beat me almost every year in the final round of the show down super skill, the jerk.
_______________________________

The average teenage boy thinks about sex once every seven seconds; in Minnesota he thinks about hockey the other six.

"BLADES OF GLORY"

I agree that the talent level has dropped in this tournament in the last couple of years. My son has played goalie for the past 3 years in this tournament, and has not faced alot of quality shots.

Also, the cost is outrageous. In regards to tournament costs winter vs. summer. The Superrink still charges a gate fee at alot of their tournaments, in addition to $1,200.00 entry fees.

The guys that run this don't do anything else. They used to run 2x's a year now down to 1. It's like having a food stand at the fair.

i played a couple times in the elite - the rules say no more than 3 players per assoc on one team - 2 years ago there was a bantam team that had 7 players from centennial on it. they will list the players as being from lino lakes, shoreview, etc, to hide their association. dad is the coach, dad's fishing buddy is the assisitant, dad's fishing buddy's girlfriend is the mgr. - what an elite team that was !

Wow, seams like a lot of bitter players. I have been in all of the above tournaments. And they by far have some of the best players playing. The Elite Classic is on a different weekend then the Super Series and the Selects.
And I don't remember any of you playing. The players that play in these tournaments are the players you talk about on these posts. And if you never were ask to play then keep working.

Elite Classic

The Elite Classic tells the coaches to try to get the best players they can, and a lot of the best players do play.

From the 2003 Elite Classic South Mite Major team, just for example, there were quite a few top players - Seth Ambroz, Benny Walker, Ben Marshall (I think, maybe he was on the East squad), Andrew Ford, Brady Riesgraf, Michael Sit, Max Smith, and Sean Madigan (from Burnsville). Those guys are basically still all at the very top of PeeWee A hockey now.

A few kids play that you could argue are not the best, too, but mostly it's a great tournament. There are some pretty good kids that don't play, because of various reasons.

I help coach a team at the Super Series Tourney. I can tell you that we do our best to get the "best players" to play on these teams. HOWEVER, both the Super Series and the MN Select Tourney is on the same weekend. There are many things that are considered by the players that are asked to play in these tournaments.
1. Which teams asked the player to play first has bearing in some cases.
2. Location of the player - Traveling time.
3. Where are their friends playing.
4. Family conflicts - Family Vacations etc.
5. History - where have they or their friends played in years past.

Many things affect how coaches select players for these teams as well.
And you are absolutly right, when you say, a lot of it is "who you know." Such as the following ... When watching a Peewee A game for example, how do you know which players are first year Peewee's? Or, who is a 94, 93, or 92? To select a team you really need to know which players are what age. By knowing that info, you can then watch them specifically. Also, when you know a player, you can watch/scout them specifically and find out about others their same age as well, on their teams. These are just some examples as to why the "who you know" comes into play.

so you have coaches volunteering their time (in many cases these coaches are dads) perhaps leaving work early for practices, you have parents putting in their time at the concession stand or working their assoc.'s tournament in one way or another, you have "bars" selling pull-tabs (gambling) - all so their assoc. can keep their costs down, and, pass those savings on to the member families. then, all these parents turn around and pay $175.00 so a couple of guys from some spring tournament can give your child a silk screened jersey and let you believe your child is an "elite" player. Now, is your child an "elite" player by virtue of the selection process, or is he an elite player because you, as a parent, "ponied - up" the $175.00.

Like I said, you sound bitter. This is a great tournament, no mater what the cost. Why don't you get last years Selects program, they list all current and past players. Then you tell me. It’s pretty impressive. Like I said, I take it you have never been asked to play. Just keep working!! And maybe we'll see ya in St. Cloud.

My experience with these teams is that they do get some of the best players, they are well run, and a good time.

Do not expect it to make your kid a better player!!

The best part of it is your kid gets to know and develop friendships with some of the other kids that he plays against during the winter.

Buddy,

"The best part of it is your kid gets to know and develop friendships with some of the other kids that he plays against during the winter. "

That was a great line! Hopefully parents and coaches play a part to have a child make a freind in each association they play at. Introduce themselves, learn people skills too! Not to exploit that they are our enemy! The game is a competion.

Elite Tournaments

Post by slapshot 69 » Sun Feb 26, 2006 7:54 am

Hey Pucker 78 Actually the truely elite teams are all Canadian. Hockey in Canada the players, coaches, and the way the game is played is all around better. The Blades are able to compete and do well. But other clubs dont. There are some american clubs Little Ceasars Jr Bruins Mission They all struggle. Western Canada also has some great teams. Fact is if you really want to see where you stand go to Canada.

mn selects

Post by kpete » Sun Feb 26, 2006 12:18 pm

This tournament is not a fundraiser for any hockey club, it is merely a tourney put together in hopes of bringing some or most of the best player in the state together, However, some kids(or shall I say parents) get their nose bent out of shape and eventually put their own tourney together in order for their own to participate. It is then that talent gets spead out in more than one place. Mn Selects has no open gate. No fee. They just want to put together an opportunity for Minnesota players to play at a higher level. Other group just want to cash in on the dough!!!

Canadian hockey is no different then hockey in America there about the same skill wise. I used to play for a Canadian team U.S. teams are just as skilled as any other team in Canada. There just more careful about who they pick for teams and some teams play all summer some half its just that the kids are really committed and dont skip practices for other sports.
And the tournaments they dont let just anyone in they make sure there a good team and if there not very good they dont let them back the next year. When they set up scrimmages to they try to play the best teams not just any team to get ice but literally the best like Saskatewan Wheatland, Mn Blades, and many other teams.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ystud27 at: 2/26/06 5:20 pm
