Quote:
Psh, who cares. VFW means close to nothing. Good for White Bear Lake but honestly,

I think it is too bad that you feel that way. It was the best tournament I have ever been to. yea really. A state title is a state title, hands down. WBL got some tough luck in regions and came back and won that state championship... just shows there determination. Good for them. Awsome season WBL

Where did the VFW state tournament take place? Who were some players for WBL that looked good? Who do you think might make an impact on WBLs next year?

Game was played at the Little Ralph in Thief River Falls. Stand out players for the bears: Goalie: Owen Collette played very well. Got a shut out against Duluth in the final. Defense: Brent Putney played very well as well as Forward: Matt Sura. All three have a great shot at making the varsity team next year. Matt Pasma... the only 1st year on the team had a great tournie also.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... s>chips at: 3/28/06 7:42 pm

Aslo for forwards, #10, Tony something. Im not sure on how many points he had, but hes fast, and probly the toughest player ive seen all year. That kid is an animal. Hes not that tall, but he will toss anyone in his path. Kids crazy. But Owen Collette is was probly the best goalie in the state. Or it was between him and Mike Lee.

Colette had a good tourney no doubt, but did you see how Mike Lee carried Roseau in their Duluth East game. WOW! And I somewhat agree with SnipinGinos, but not fully. There were a lot of weak teams there, but WBL had to play two good teams DE and Chaska (both of whom they killed). Congrats to WBL!

Mike Lee is the Roseau team. You have to give him a lot of credit to the teams success this year. As far as weak competition in the VFW... The same thing happens in the other state tournie also. Not all the best teams make it there. State Champs Centennial did not make it. Most A Bantam teams on any given day can beat any other A Bantam team.

Great point Chips. It is a State Championship and I know of a team that would have loved to have played in it.

Ask those State Champion Centennial Cougars if they would have liked to play in that tournament? I promise you they are bitter for not being there.

It's a joke that they call it the state tournament. There is ONLY ONE state tournament, and it is the one run by Minnesota Hockey. This is no different than winning a tournament during the season. For example, should the winer of the St. Cloud Center Ice Classic next year have a banner that says "St. Cloud Center Ice State Champions". I mean come on, what a joke.

But congrats to WBL on winning the tournament.

The VFW state tourny has a longer history than MAHA. There were many good teams there and it was played in hands down the best arena in the state. Some great games were played including 3 ot between DE and Roseau. I bet every Bantam player would like to extend their season.

I didn't say it wasn't a good tournament or there wasn't good team or that it wasn't a nice rink. But please drop the "State Tournament" part from the name. It is the VFW tournament, and nothing more!

Well much like the team you are associated belongs to a governing body that hosts a state tournament to determine the champion of its membership (you know this as Minnesota Hockey).

The VFW hosts a state tournament championship that determines the champion of their group as well. It is played off between teams that must win a district tournament and represent that area determined by the VFW to be that district.

The fact is no matter how you want to rate the tournaments there is no question that each has value to its membership. Would Centennial give up its MH state championship for a VFW state championship? I would say probably not... . But I'm pretty sure they are proud to be competing for both. So instead of trashing something you don't really understand, why don't you talk to your coach about getting your team a VFW sponsor so you can compete for that state championship as well next year.

I'm sorry but it is a state tourny where you have to win a district tourny to get there. That is the definition of a state tournament.

First off I am not trashing the tournament, just saying that its not a state tournament.

Second that is not the definition of a state tournament. A state tournament means any team in the state has a chance to win it. Here only VFW teams have a chance to win it. It is an invational tournament for VFW teams. So what if you have to win a "district game" go move on.

So if you play in a regular round robin tournament invational tournament (like the st.cloud or eden prairie touraments), can you call the round robin games "district games", and the the semis and championship the "state tournament"? So now we have a state champion from every torunament!

There is only one state tournament (this isnt high school hockey ), so deal with it!

Congratulations to WBL for winning this tournament. This is a great honor to represent your sponsor, your local VFW. Also this goes to the previous 50 winners.

As MN HOCKEY NUT pointed out this not a MNHOCKEY State tournament. This is a tournament sanctioned by USA Hockey, and MNHOCKEY, just like every other association (invitational)tournament in the state.

The word "State" comes form the VFW committee in the State of Minnesota that holds a tournament for all eligible Bantam A teams that are sponsored by a VFW post, the entire season, registered in/under MNHOCKEY. This is a tournament that your team registers for by the end of Decemebr. NOT ALL BANTAM A TEAMS IN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE. If not, you do not get to participate in the tournament. This tournament also has rules that are specific in regards to the host getting a slot in the state tournament and other issues that I am unfamiliar with that are different from a state tournament participation through districts and regionals, where EVERYONE is able to participate.

Once agin, this is not to take anything away from WBL, you won a great and honorable tournament, but this is not a MINNESOTA STATE TOURNAMENT under MNHCOKEY. This same issue was discussed last year when Rosemount won the tournament.

information obtained from:
www.vfw.state.mn.us/hockeyrules

Could anyone make a tournament that said "Hopkins, MN State Hockey Tournament?"

Listen MN HOCKEY NUT and any other morons:

The VFW State Tournament has been around for 51 years. It is not Joe's State Tournament, The Hopkin's State Tournament, etc

No one claims that they would not rather have been to or won the MAHA State Tournament. But this tournament had 4 teams from the MAHA tournament, the MAHA State champ was beat out in the VFW district play-offs, and the tournament was won by a team that should be rated in the top 3 of the final rankings.

If you want to do away with the VFW league, playoffs, and state tourney, then I say let's do a serious restructuring of the MAHA regions (including the arbitrary placement of metro teams in two distinct 8 team brackets) so that lame teams do not make a mockery of who should really be there.

FYI that is happening. The MAHA is redistricting next year. Not sure what the final plan is but it will be different.

The VFW really needs to redistrict, the fact that most of the metro play is in one region is a joke. The props should go to EP for escaping that district. AS for WB, all i can say is.

DA Bears are a State Champ.

MN HOCKEY NUT,
You are infact a moron. The VFW state tournament isn't just a random invitational tournament. It has its own regular season and playoffs. Just because some teams don't participate in the VFW league doesn't mean that the VFW state tournament is at the level of the St. Cloud classic or whatever. Are there really even that many teams that don't participate in the VFW league? The only team I know of that doesn't participate in the VFW league is edina (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not saying the VFW is at the level of MAHA, or that many players would rather have a VFW state championship over MAHA, but it still isn't a bad thing to have and it deserves the state tournament name.

I am curious to the ones talking down on the VFW state as if it something less, how many titles has your program won? here is the list of the past vfw champs and I find it impressive.

2006-White Bear Lake, clearly better than every team in the state and could beat Centennial or Edina game to game.
2005-Rosemount, think they had bad team last year lets talk
2004-Moorhead, they won both
2003-Centennial, they played white bear in both state title games
2002-Centennial
2001-Chaska

catching on. some of the districts are out of whack you still have to earn your way there and beat some damn good teams. Congratulations to White Bear especially after playing your maha state tourney at anoka.

By the way where were all the District 3 teams that were yapping on here all year why arent you talking now. NO maple grove, no hopkins or FINK, no Osseo, no Orono where has MNlightning39 been havent seen his name since there embarrasment against White Bear. enough said.
