North Dakota "FIGHTING SUE"

Just cross out the letters IOUX several thousand times in the arena and replace them with the letters UE. New jerseys, marketing materials and for sale merchandise can easily be changed.

So simple, why has everyone overlooked this? [/u]
Good one  Fighting Sue is a perfect fit

Since this topic has been bumped I will let everyone know what I've heard regarding the nickname change.

This will be the last season they will be called the Fighting S***x. And the word is that they will be without a nickname for at least two full seasons. So, those of you waiting on a new nickname, it's a few years off. I also heard about the "Flyers" idea, but apparently that was just a rumor. One thing is for certain, it's going to be a messy situation with the arena (with the thousands of logos tattooed all over the place).

One thing I was hearing in NoDak country was the heck with having an official nickname. What happens if the University has no official name and the fans do what they want???? Are they going to stop the fans from callign them the Sioux???? Will they confiscate shirts and jerseys and hats and pants and ....underwear at the door????? Maybe they'll hand out prison uniforms to cover up with????

There will be no nickname.
Simply called the "University of North Dakota Hockey Team".

Ludicrous.
Did you catch the little blurb in the StarTribune this weekend?
It basically called out the ridiculous inconsistencies in the whole deal. It is "offensive" for the U of M hockey team to play the "Fighting Sioux", but on Nov. 26th, the U of M football team will play the "Fighting Illini", and that is just dandy.
Now, I absolutely understand the "tribe signoff" requirement, but seriously.

How about the Florida State Seminoles? They even have a white guy dress-up as an indian, ride in on horseback and throw a spear into the field!!!!!! They also have no problem selling thier afke tribal crap at the casinos for a little profit, wheres you pride and respect there??

Its all about MONEY just like everything else. The Sioux tribe members get to attend UND for FREE.

FSU has permission from the Seminole nation. The natives in return get a cash settlement for FSU to use the name.

I have one that is even WORSE than the Sioux, Seminoles and the Fighting Illini... The Washington REDSKINS.

Knew they had permission but just an example of money taking advantage over basis of the rule. One thing to use the name but to go to the exptreme of the horse and rider is another. Heck look at how much money they made just over that Jen Sterger in the stands for a few games.............

The Fighting Sioux nickname battle wages on:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/02/07/or ... h-dakotas/

Are people growing tired of the battle to save the “Fighting Sioux” nickname?
Or should its backers stay the course?

One great reason to continue, is to put a stake in the ground, with respect to the political correctness and inconsistency insanity.

Any NCAA team can continue to play the Florida Seminoles, the Fighting Illini, The Utes, etc., but the “Fighting Sioux???” Oh no, not THAT!!!

And why is race singled out as the sole basis for inappropriateness, when it comes to team nicknames?

• Nationality isn’t? Fighting Irish? Fighting Scots?
• Profession isn’t? Cowboys? Steelers? Packers? 49ers?
• Names that elicit associations to questionable subject matter? : Cougars? Trojans?
• National disasters? : Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Cyclones? Is this not insensitive to disaster victims?
• Religious Connotations : Devils, Red Devils, Blue Devils, Friars, Saints, Vikings, Crusaders?
• People who killed, robbed, or committed other sundry crimes? : Pirates? Buccaneers? Pirates? Spartans?

Could not anyone associated with any of these groups take offense to their name/image being misrepresented via a sports team?

Should we simply eliminate team nicknames altogether, and save the endless debates that are bound to arise? Would it be better to just give teams a “color” for a nickname, much like 5 year old soccer teams?

Orange? Green? Grey? Those seem safe, right? Okay, maybe not.................. “Blue” which elicits associations to depression, and “Yellow” which elicits associations to cowardice…………..and throw in “Brown”, “Black”, “Red” and “White” while you are at it, for obvious reasons.

We either need to just suck it up, as a society, or skip nicknames altogether.

People need to suck it up. The pussification of this country has gone far enough.

Oh please.
Enough with the hyper-sensitivity, already.
Who in the world is emotionally damaged by "We stole your land?"
There isn't a one, among us, that isn't a descendent of folks who lost wars, lives, and property.
And we are talking about college kids, taunting other college kids, here, over a hockey game. (a game which featured absolutely no one of Indian heritage, by the way.)

Give the PC hysteria a rest, already. The sky is not falling.

WayOutWest, I agree with you - realize that I posted the article because I found it interesting, nothing more.

I never was and never will be a Fighting Sioux fan, but I like the NCAA's PC initiative over this nickname issue even less. So typical of unelected bureaucrats...

Yep. I wasn't going after you..............just the PC Nazi's. (OOps, I probably should not have used that term, huh?)

I actually like the Fighting Sioux. I think they should stick to their guns (oops, there I go again) and fight the NCAA policy as long as they can, and expose it for how ridiculous and inconsisent it is.

And when you start trying to muzzle students, how far away from outlawing signs and celebrations? (We wouldn't want the other team to feel badly, you know?)
Do we not have MUCH bigger/better things to focus on, rather than the name/image on a college hockey sweater, or what comes out of a student's mouth, in support of their team?

I hope they fight it out with the NCAA too. The longer it drags out, the more damage their athletic department suffers. 8)

And sadly for them, this is what's happening. The real losers in the whole thing is UND itself.
