I would say I am a little surprised that Georgia has more than NoDak, but considering Georgia has a population of over 9 million and NoDak has a little over 600,000..... well......

However, the fact that Cali, Penn and Illinois have more than Wisconsin is not really surprising.

- California has a population of 37,691,912
- Illinois has a population of 12,869,257
- Pennsylvania has a population of 12,742,886

Meanwhile.....
- Wisconsin has a population of 5,711,767

As a percentage of population Wisconsin actually does pretty well relatively speaking at producing D1 talent compared to most of the rest of the country.

Minnesota and Massachussetts are definitely outliers in the number of D1 kids they produce compared to their population. It's a credit to their development methods and traditions in those states. Michigan performs about how it should relative to the rest and considering location and population. IMHO New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois actually underperform considering their location and population and I'd say even Cali really underperforms based purely on total population regardless of their location. I'd like to see Wisconsin do a little bit better because of location but population wise they don't do too badly and are growing and I'd say Colorado & Connecticut also don't do too badly based on population and location

Let's remember for some of these states that they tend to lose more players to the CHL than others.

I was only teasing you Mitch.

and China and India together have 2,000 million people, zero D1 hockey players.

North Dakota has almost 3 times as many registered youth hockey players as Georgia and they probably play better competition.

Do you have any numbers on Americans in the CHL?

Guess I figured that any that go up there are just a drop in the bucket numbers-wise compared to those who go the NCAA route.

It is a good point that e.g. it would only take a couple of CHL Dakotans to put them back above Georgia.

Have you ever been to North Dakota?

With the high school programs, college, and junior programs one would think North Dakota would have more players than Georgia. Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck combine for about 300-400 people?

I said I was still surprised and your comment about registered hockey players is true though so that does make you scratch your head about the Georgia/NoDak thing.... but using your same exact logic about registered hockey players then you should not have been at all surprised about ILL, Penn and Cali having more than WI since all three have more registered players than WI........

I hadn't checked those. You are right about IL and PA having more youth players than WI.

I believe CA still has far fewer youth players than WI. As of 2010-11 Wisconsin had ~14,600 players (18 and under) whereas California had ~8,800

Connecticut (with their 35 D1 players) will be trying to keep more of their in-state players at home if UConn makes the switch to Hockey East:

I was going by total USA hockey registrants and Cali had 22,000+ and WI had 18,000+.... but since you brought it up look at the numbers again. Why is Cali such an odd ball. How can you have 22,000+ total and 13,000 be 19 and older whereas WI has 18,000+ and only abut 3,600+ are 19 and older??? What am I missing about this picture? Florida seems to have that anomoly too, but everywhere else 18 and under are the majority of registrants... why in these two states is it totally reversed from everywhere else?

It might be Junior Hockey. CA has a lot more Junior teams than WI??

I had that same initial thought but USA hockey website says Cali has 1 Tier II Junior A team and 5 Tier III Junior A teams for a total of 6 Junior teams, whereas WI has 1 Tier I Junior A team, 2 Tier II Junior A teams, 2 Tier II Junior B teams and 1 Tier II Junior C team for a total of 6 Junior teams. So I don't think that's accounting for roughly 10,000 more 19 year olds and older, nor does it account for the huge imbalance between youth and adult in Cali, if anything had they had more junior teams you'd think 18 and younger numbers would be larger as well. Also, WI has twice as many registered officials and WI has consideraly more registered coaches as well which would theoretically boost 19 and older registrants. Nationally 18 and under registrants outnumber 19 and over registrants 3 to 1, but in Cali 19 and over have roughly 13,000 to the roughly 9,000 for 18 and under. It's not making sense to me. Trying to find the variable that makes this so.... ?? very odd???

Let's also put this spin on it, Minnesota has over 54,000 USA Hockey registrants total (conmpared to Cali's 22,000), now Minnesota only has 7,730 registrants that are 19 and older (and MN has 12 junior teams....), yet Cali has over 13,000 registrants 19 and older. It doesn't add up.... :o

Do the pros and their minor leagues have to register when playing in the U.S.? California has three pro teams to Minnesota's one and Wisconsin's zero

Again I like the way you are thinking but I still don't think that's enough to account for roughly 10,000 more 19 year old and older registrants.

Also, Wisconsin does have an AHL team (I'm sure Cali does as well so the probably have more than 3... just saying there is a pro team in WI, it's just an AHL affiliate of the NHL Predator's rather than an NHL team)

My guess is that the difference is adult rec league players....perhaps these players are more likely or required to register with USA Hockey in California and a few other states.
