Ooops. Seems as though the selection committee made a few errors. I don't see Polacek, Lee, Reber, Reagan, McMahon, or Horstman on the select 15 list. Must be a mistake.

Think about it guys. At least the Orono HS coach chose one of his Orono A Bantam players; it shows that politics never play a role in the selcetion process. Try again guys.

In all fairness to the kid from Orono, he had more points than anyone else in the festival. Some of his goals were tap ins but hey, you have to have some hockey sense to get in position for those.

I talked to some of the other dads that didn't have their kids (some of the ones you named) chosen and you know what?
Some of those you named didn't have the best camp. That happens, this is development in young men. They will be back next year if they deserve it and they will prepare and know what it takes to make the final cut.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... oorrink at: 6/30/04 7:21 pm

Thanks for the response. Fortunately, I watched many of the games and have been involved in the selection process before. A few players who were left off the list had avery good camp, but were not selected. Working hard does pay off, but leaving players off the final selection like Horstman, Lee and especially Polack is not correct. These players are some of the best in Minnesota.

I appreciate your opinion, but add that the non-selection of many players is a dis-service to Minnesota Hockey. I have coached all three of the players mentioned above and I believe that it is not right to leave them off the list in favor of some other players. No offense to Orono - it just seems rather convoluted.

Some of the comments on here are why sports get a bad name. The adults put these ideas in kids heads and then everyone thinks they were wronged.

Herb Brook's dad handled it much better when he was cut from the 60 team. Simply put many adults need to grow up and realize your modeling behavior that is simply detrimental to our youth!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I concur. They didn't get selected. As I would tell my kids: If they played to less than their ability, they know why they didn't. if they played to the best of their ability, then they did their best, then you did all you could do and it was out of their hands. Either way, go home, use it to motivate yourself to work harder because next year you want to leave no doubt that you're a player to be considered.

As for complaining about it here... It's public breast beating, and sounds of "My kids wuz robbed", which is embarrasing for the kids, and non-productive. I certainly don't want my kids to think that non-constructive complaining is an appropriate response to a questionable situation.

Change is from within. Write your MN Hockey reps and discuss bettering the process in private and change the system.

and I learned early on in hockey, two things... 1) there are a lot of politics in selections of players and coaches of teams (who then select players) - deal with it. 2) If the kids have good role-models, they will mature into the best players they can be, no matter what teams pick or don't pick them.

I agree with previous statements about the roster. I don't see a lot of the players who would be expect to be on the team. I am sure that each player was scouted and carefully chosen, but with that also comes which scout was looking at which player. Ben Blood, yes he is a good player and hes amazing knowledge of the defensive game but he has an ego the size of the metrodome, attitude on and off the ice should be taken into account on this kind of team. Alex Fong is a great player and he deserves a spot on the team. Other young men from surrounding cities should have been scouted though. There are more players out there that aren't from the top 10 schools in our state, more players that go unrecognized just because their school or association hasn't won state titles and what not. I think those who selected the players on the team should have thought more wisely about what kind of players they want.

Great responses guys. It is good to have an opinion and those opinions should be valued. Politics play a bigger role in sports theses days. If it were not for politics, some players may not be given a chance to show their skills.

Regarding the comment of a dad complaining that their kid was off the list, please note that I am not the father of any of the kids on the list or not selected to participate. I am a coach who has watched or instructed many of the players at the camp. I disagree with the non-selection, but I am not going the length to say that it is an injustice. I believe that the players non-selection is unfortunate, as they belong in the top category (not based on their name recognition).

The players that I mentioned, Polacek, Lee and Hostman are hard workers who belong on the final roster. I render that opinion based on monitoring their development over the past five years.

With that said, I believe that the players that should have been on the roster will work harder to showcase their skills. I am just a little concerned as I watched most of the camp games and some players left off the list played very well in the camp and deserved a spot.

I am happy, though, that some of the new players on the final team received the chance to showcase themselves. I just hope that they are able to compete at the new level. We will see in August at St. Cloud.

Post by Hockeystud016 »

Vandersmut, the bantam A from orono had 12 points in 5 days the most out of anyone in the last two years, last year the most was 11 and your saying he didnt deserve to make it? are you kidding me????????? Plus the orono coach wouldnt have that much say in it anyway.

Settle Hockeystud - Read and understand. I am happy that the player from Orono made the team and please understand that I am not saying that he did not deserve to make the team. Any player that has more than 11 points in a select camp deserves consideration.

My only point is that it is my opinion that a few players that should have been on the roster were not selected (these are not pre-Madonna). I hope the player in question from Orono showcases himself in the National camp and does as well as he did in the MN Select Camp.

Vandersmut, i see where you are coming from. i also think some of those kids should have made the team. not mentioned was tyler kiefer he didnt make it and i saw a couple of his games and he looked like the most solid defensemen besides fairchild and jaskowiak
