Re: Select 16 FINAL Minnesota Team
Where are Beau Christian, Jascha Pettit (Wadena?) and David Fischer from?

Re: Select 16 FINAL Minnesota Team
I believr Fischer is from Apple Valley, Pettit is from Wadena, and Christian from Moorhead. Congrats and good luck to those who made it, and keep working to those who did not. It was sure fun to watch the scrimmages.

canzenello made it as a forward?...crazy stuff

last years team
Would have been better to keep last years team... much better selections.

Re: last years team
A question for Spud followers, If Beau Christian is indeed from Moorhead, are he and Jordy twins, cousins or not related? I have the program from the high school tourney and the state bantam tourney and can't find Beau in either one, was he the J.V. goalie this year?

look at the at large players
They have Trent Palm on the At Large team... they know what they're doin for sure... And seeing as I'm a forward not a goaltender... That makes me r. tenny***

Re: look at the at large players
Who should be off the team so Palm could be on it. The team is loaded and good players are going to not be selected. That will happen every year.

Select 16s
I watched all of the 16s scrimmages, and here's a couple of thoughts. I've heard alot about both Palm and Forney, and they are both very good players. But looking at just what happened on the ice that weekend, Palm wasn't in the top 5 D, and Forney looked slow and questionable. Indereiden was hurt, but he was a bubble kid in last year's 15s and I doubt he would've made it. The goalies that stood out were the ones who made it. The two kids who impressed me the most were Beggs and Levine. Beggs was hands down the best technical goalie over the weekend, and seems very athletic as well. If he continues to train, his upside is large. Levine scored half of his team's goals and probably prevented twice as many from being scored by the other squad - without a doubt he's the most underrated of the top 88s in MN and the most complete player I saw there.

Did anyone see how Jordon Van Guilder (sp??) did during tryouts.

van gilder
He did pretty well. From what I saw i thought he stood out. In a good way.

Re: last years team
Beau and Jordy are cousins. Not sure at what level Beau played this year, but I am guessing it was the JV level.

Re: last years team
Beau was the Goalie for the JV team. Played amazingly the times i saw him.

austin lee...
how did he not make the team? did he have a bad tryout, he traded off with senior goalie drew glowa for jefferson as a sophmore and had a record like 12-2. very suprised to see him as an alternate..

probably cause
He is not as good as everyone hypes him to be. He is decent at best.

austin lee
He had a very good tryout. thats why hes an alternate. He shouldn't have been in the top 51 in the first place. But he took advantage of it.

Re: austin lee
Would tend to disagree with that analysis. Thought he had a great festival to get into the 51, but then had a tough weekend. That's what should be expected at age 16, to have some highs and lows. Keep in mind any of these festivals are single snapshots of a player's ability, not something to bank on. Lee will do just fine. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Re: austin lee
I agree - Lee is a good goaltender. I would'nt put him ahead of Beggs and Christian.

Considering that Austin is young, he he'll be fine. Even though he is a soph at Jefferson, he should have been a 9th grader. He advanced one year in school while at Shattuck - why he one would do that - I don't know.

Downstroke on Lee is that he doesn't move real quick. However, his position play is very sound which makes up for his quickness. I didn't see the tryouts, but I would guess quickness played a factor.

National festival will test Blake hockey player
Brian Stensaas, Star Tribune
June 23, 2004 WLOUWERSE0623

At the conclusion of practices last season, Blake boys' hockey coach John Hamre would often stage fun three-on-three drills.

When players such as Rob Page, J.T. Wyman and Will Engasser took the ice -- all at least 6-feet-tall and more than 200 pounds -- more often than not, 5-foot-8 freshman Mike Louwerse was there, eager to take one of them on.

"I like the speed and stick handling of hockey," Louwerse said. "But I like the hitting, too. I like to get roughed up in practices. It makes me better."

Beginning Saturday, Louwerse and three other west-metro hockey players will be off to the weeklong USA Hockey Advanced 16 National Festival in Rochester, N.Y. As part of the Minnesota district team, Louwerse can expect plenty of rough stuff to go along with tough competition in the annual event.

"The competition at these festivals is the best there is," said Kevin McLaughlin, director of youth hockey for USA Hockey. "It's not just good teams that will be out there, but the best depth. There won't be much dropoff from line to line."

Joining Louwerse in Rochester will be Joshua Levine of Benilde-St. Margaret's, Taylor Matson of Orono and Wayzata's Kevin Wehrs.

The four will be among 20 players on the Minnesota district team, one of 11 districts participating in the festival-style tournament along with one at-large team.

The teams will practice once each day and play a game against another district every night. At the end of the festival, one champion will be crowned. Of all the participants, one team will be selected to represent the United States at the Nation's Cup in Germany this August.

Scouts from all realms of hockey will be present at the festival, including representatives from every NCAA Division I program and many semipro and professional teams.

It's an opportunity of a lifetime for these players, but only if they fit the bill the coaches are looking for.

"Because of the exposure they receive, we've really seen the number of kids and participation grow," said Mike MacMillan, this year's Minnesota district coach, who has been involved in USA festivals on and off since 1990. "Really, there's maybe 40 kids who could be on this. But we put a team together, the guys who fit the best into the type of team we want to bring out there and compete."

MacMillan points out that when Elk River's Paul Martin fit into this age category, he didn't make the team. The former University of Minnesota standout now plays for the New Jersey Devils and was third on the team among defensemen with 24 points last season.

Louwerse isn't looking that far ahead yet. He still has three years left at Blake -- all of which, he said, he will play instead of leaving for a Junior-level team -- and for the time being he is just focused on this coming week.

"I want to showcase my skills as best I can for the scouts," he said. "It's an honor to be playing."

Brian Stensaas is at bstensaas@startribune.com.
