All-Minnesota Cities

Post by Wild4hockey »

I recently moved to Alaska because I was foolish enough to think that I was missing something living in Minnesota. After being gone for a while I realize how great Minnesota really is and can't for the life of me think of why everyone doesn't live there. So the real question is what is the best town in Minnesota? (Factors that must be defended are obviously Hockey, Outdoors activites, hunting, etc..) Let the debate begin.

Bemidji is a nice place.
It may not be the best but has a lot to offer without living in the TC.

2 universities and the Tech college.
College hockey is D1 so lots of quality players here and visitors.
Good shopping, gambling, several good restaurants. Quality theater (not movie houses, although there are about 9??? choices).

4 hockey rinks.
Curling capital of the USA.
Fishing, a yeahlots of good fishing.
Hunting, ah so about 8 deer this morning. Bear capital just north, birds yep.

Quality regional hospital. Good family docs and specialty docs.
Good school system.

And if you need to get someplace bigger - Winnipeg, Grand Forks, Fargo, Duluth, St Cloud, and the TC are very easy drives.

Sits right on two nice lakes with the Mississippi flowing to several others (and others not on the main river).

Lots of good stuff.

Elliott70,
You make some great points about Bemidji, I haven't been there since I was a kid attending Bemidji Hockey School with Bob Peters. My brother-in-law recently graduated from BSU and while in school he worked at the 4 Seasons resort. From the sound of it, I really missed my opportunity to take in a very nice place.

I'm a big fan of the Brainerd lakes area. Though I'm not much of a fisherman, I truely enjoyed being around the trees and lakes.

White Bear is a very nice place to live. We have the second biggest lake in the metro area (but unfortunately no lakeside restaraunts!)

A few years back, The Pioneer Press did a feature on the "most minnesotan city" and if my memory serves me well, it was spring lake park.

I dont think they brought hockey into the equation though. They just mentioned small town feel, the "nice quotient", etc.

I would have to say the Brainerd lakes area, but the way its going these days, its starting to look like the dells. Nisswa is pretty minnesotan feeling.

wild4hockey, how long have you live in Anchorage? Less than a year? It takes time to get used to a new place after being in one spot for so long. After a year though I was hooked on Alaska. This will probably be my permanent residence forever. Go to Minnesota for the HS playoffs and it's all good. Anchorage is so much more culturally diverse, and people are so active here I love it. Plus Anchorage's economy is tops right now. I know there is no way Grand Rapids compares when it comes to money making possibilities. For instance I made about $150/hour shoveling roofs 2 years ago. I think in Rapids I would have been shot for trying to charge that much.
Now, Grand Rapids is a nice small town, and there was a time when I thought the scenery was good there, until Alaska blew me away. Getting up in the morning looking at Pokegama just doesn't compare to snowcapped mountains and the ocean. Plus the weather is so much nicer here. I guess you can go to Fairbanks if you want the real Minnesota type weather. I'll stay next to my warm ocean current.

If I had to live in Minnesota again I would probably live in St. Paul. I love life in the fast lane and seemingly more forward thinking people. The older generations are in northern MN, so if you like slow things like ice fishing and playing cards, have at it. I hate small towns, but each to his own.

I have lived in Anchorage for about 8 months now. Don't get me wrong Alaska is amazing. Skiing, mountains, hiking, fishing etc...but the one thing they are lacking is good hockey. Their are great benefits to living in Alaska such as no income tax, dividend check, higher wages. Down side is it is expensive to live here. Food and housing are really high priced in Alaska. I loved growing up in TRF but their isn't a lot to do, Pennington county is the only county in Minnesota without a lake. I am leaning toward the Duluth or Bemidji area. Those cities have everything Alaska has to offer except mountains.

Bemidji mountains...

We have Buena Vista, if you have ten seconds you can ski it twice.

(That's not fair to them, they do a nice job up on county Road 15, at least for MN.)

Elliot...that made me laugh. I have skied Buena Vista many times. I always have a good time. I was reffering to cross-country skiing though. There are trails everywhere here in Anchorage/surrounding area. It truly is a winter playland like no other. That being said Minnesota is still my home and I can't wait to get back.

I'll scratch behind your ears as long as I don't have to read your "book". I will give you this, "Bermidji" is a great town - a rare success story in No. MN.

wild4hockey, have you been skiing at Alyeska yet? Not the biggest mountain in the world, but you probably have to go heli-skiing to find a more challenging mountain, especially North Face. BTW, for good food in Girdwood, Chair Five or the Double Muskie. Double Muskie won an award for best steak in the United States last year.

I haven't had a chance to go ski there yet. I have been to busy with school and work. A lot of people I work with go to Hatcher or Turnagain for some good backcountry skiing.

I have heard about the food at the double musky, I heard it was great. Honestly I hate driving that damn seward highway, especially as of late with all the closures. You are taking a chance of being stranded for a day or two when travelling that road. I will try to make it down to Alyeska over spring break.

500 inches so far for the year. They average 800 inches a year, so they've got a ways to go.

I know a guy I work with said that he was skiing that day at mid-moutain. Every time he rode the lift back up there was a fresh blanket of snow so he could make fresh tracks. That is an epic day of skiing.
Check out this link Alyeska Mountain

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... 4hockey at: 2/15/06 2:03 pm
