KMSP coverage sucks

Post by Metallica » Thu Mar 11, 2004 2:51 pm

I just got done watching the player introductions for the Wayzata/Tartan game and I have to say that the camera work sucks. Technical difficulties...my ass. Whatever the excuse is I know it wouldn't happen if the tournament was on Channel 4 WCCO. Who wants to see the players’ backs and numbers? That's kind of the point of the introductions, to see the players' faces. It gives you a better sense of who these participants in the greatest high school hockey tournament in the country are. Almost as if to bring the game right into your living room. Only KMSP channel 9 could screw it up. I think it's about time that WCCO retakes the tournament and reestablishes some respectability that the tourney has lost since KMSP took over.

Not only the camera work but how about the commentating? I have never heard so many errors in years.

I don't know if it's 'CCO over KARE but at least one of the stations where the sportscaster has at least played the game of hockey!

Randy Shaver seems to really understand the game and the importance and draw to HS sports. Perhaps they should give it to him to take over.

Whoever this "9" guy is...he couldn't even ask Whitey Aus some decent questions!??!

Randy or Rosen would have made that a bit more interesting.

Nanne is about experienced as you get in hockey and hockey broadcasting and he is still terrible.
But at least you can turn down the volume and watch.
But when the cameras dont work you aren't left with much.

KMSP is batting 100%. Remember last years evening game? They didn't even have the player intro's on the TV. Something to do with some presidential coverage, so they couldn't get their broadcasting feed.....right!!!!! Great coverage!! How about last night's game against Hibbing vs. St. Cloud Cathedral....technical difficulties!!!

I'm not a fan of the "hometown" news coverage on CCO or KARE, but I think that feel works effectively like it did back when CCO was still covering the sport. Rosen and crew use to cover short school specials and team videos that represented their respective schools.

At KMSP it is pretty much b&w with a few "Achievement Awards" handed out by corporations that reside in local areas.

I strongly disagree with the Nanne comment because he brings a much needed antique quality to coverage that doesn't have all that much high school feel about it. In years past he had always lifted my eye with much insight that no one else either noticed or talked much about. His years of experience works well here.

The one person I'm not certain about is the man who sits left of Woog and the center announcer. I just do not get any insightful knowledge from him and feel it is best for the future of KMSP and the league to find someone a little more experienced in the booth.

The other two alternate announcers work much better. The brunette is a bit glossy, but the other heavier set man with the reseding hairline knows his stuff pretty well. The highlight for me was hearing that man was the goalie for the '85 Burnsville team who won state with Scott Bloom. I can only wonder what Bloom is doing these days? It was his late goal that won the championship for B'ville and made him a high school star. Back then I use to think of the B'ville teams as football players on skates. During that era they were amongst the hardest hitting teams.

I remember the pretourney build-up that WCCO did, the videos and interviews. They made the state tourney something special and treated it with the respect it deserves.

KMSP seems to treat it as an interruption to their normal programming. Just don't get that same feeling.

I like Lou, he will criticize kids, not many will do that. He is honest and up front, praises the kids he likes and says when they screw up. Kids could learn allot listening to him.

Post by rams1981 » Thu Mar 11, 2004 11:13 pm

Read in the paper today Louie is looking at retiring, finally, couldn't happen soon enough for me. Sad part is they want to replace him with son, Marty. First we have to put up with Wally and now Marty, not any nepotism there<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> ..The coverage just seems to get worse every year, actually liked the corny school videos and profiles; brought the tourney to what it is a high school EVENT. Have to agree with the gent that said it seems as if the coverage is a pain and an interuption to regular programming for the station......<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">

Alot of people have criticized Lou Nanne on this site, but he has done a heck of alot for the state of Minnesota as far as hockey is involved in the last 30 or so years! I remember him and Tom Reed amonst others, going around the state playing for the NorthStars alumina team and after the game , staying and signing sticks and autographs ect.. for the kids. He may not be the best announcer, but who is "WOOG"??? and i'm sure Louey knows as much or more about the game, then those that criticize him! Just my 2 cents worth!

Lou is fine but not Marty

Post by upucker » Thu Mar 11, 2004 11:40 pm

Marty has been riding on his dads name way back when he tried playin for the Gophers. What a joke he was, guy couldn't skate. I want BENCH WARMER BOB back and good old Al Shavers. Those were the days. Lou's voice has been around the Tournament for years and does keep the memories alive.

Lou has a hard time seeing the ice and his monitor, also gets fixed in on all the hype of a particular player. Maida for East gets the shutout with 21 saves, gets no recognition whats so ever, when making a save, he refers to "East" making the save, and referring to O'Brien as the overall star of the game. No problem with him getting one of the 3 stars of the game, there sure was no one else to give it to, but 2 five hole goals and 5 pipes, lets give recognition where recognition is due.

I'm just going to comment on channel 9. First off, Lou, Wally, and most of their crew is usually very bad. Luckily I don't have to put up with them, I go to the game. There used to be a time where I taped all the games because they had such great coverage on 4, I didn't want to miss the videos, and the games were awesome.

I think the worst of the worst though, is the "technical difficulties" they had during the Wayzata/Tartan intros, and they used the "goal cam". No wonder Wayzata was fired up and won! They want their FACES on television, not their backs. At least the goal cam cought Tartan's faces.

The new format they have for the teams is horrible too. Every year as the player skates out, his name was always underneath the pic, on tv. Now it just says the team name, and the coaches are the only ones introduced live with their names on the screen.

I don't know how we can get them to see they suck. Maybe a petition at the games?

In an unrelated issue, does anyone wonder where the millions of dollars taken in by the league goes? I heard they rent the building for a $1 a day rental charge. The arena does this to keep the tournament in Saint Paul, and of course they still make money from the concessions, and their people are hired to work. Think about it! The average ticket price is $10, last year's attendence take was $1,155,240. Yes I know its not pure profit, not anywhere near it, but they also earn revenue at the tourney from Souvenir sales, concession revenue, and lest we all forget ADS. Advertising alone has to make the total revenue over 2 mill. You have in ice ads, board ads, digi ads on the wraparound display, digi ads in the top level displays, the "extra digi ads"-those like Jostens and Wells Fargo that go throughout the whole wraparound display at times, score board ads, the tv scoreboard ads, the program ads, and of course the ads where the announcer mentions the sponsor. Where does all the money go? According to the program, the first year like 6,000 people saw the tournament, and the gate receipts were enough to cover all expenses, and make a modest profit. With 115,000 fans, it seems to rationalize that last year's profit was humongous, especially comparing it to the first year's.

Why is the league so cheap? Why don't they spring for the XCEL "extras", like putting out a full team name on the display, using all 8 sides of the scoreboard, using the fog and horn? The XCEL lets the colleges use it, so its not exclusive to the pros. Its just the league doesn't pay for them.

Another gripe, why doesn't the league allow replays to be shown? I think its horrible what they do to block it. No replays of goals, good plays or penalties. The league is blocking it.

Puckster

www.wildpuck.com

where does the money go?

Post by hockeydad » Fri Mar 12, 2004 12:56 am

The league is audited every year, and the state legislature and state auditor's office keep a close eye on the money. The league board of directors is made up of school board members and administrators from around the state.

Most of the profits fromt he few state tournaments that make money go to pay for the non-revenue programs the state runs.

As for tv coverage...I understand that the league recently hired a former executive at Channel 9 as a consultant for tv contracts. I don't know if that is good or bad.

So in other words, rather than pay for a grander, spectacle of a tournament, which brings in the most revenue; instead our ever increasing ticket prices and rising program fees to pay for sports that don't make a profit?

The tournament was created to be self sufficent, if it had not covered its costs, it would have quickly been eliminated. Why must it be dumbed down while its fans are paying ever increasing prices to subsidize non self sufficient tournaments?
Puckster

www.wildpuck.com
