No gferhock1, We absolutley should not do away with sports in high school. We shoud not, however , dismiss out of hand the possibility that high schhol age sports could be better if they were run by people involved in them rather than a school district.

Yes, politics will always be involved but the continued existence of these vital programs would no longer be a politicall issue.

And for those who asked , yes I am nuts and I need a phsyco the rapist.

hockeydad,
Everybody has their own experiences but to say that politics does not enter into who makes the team and who plays in high school is, I think, a minority view.

If hockey was moved out of the high school it most likely would be picked up and expanded by the present youth program. Then the levels may be similar to what bantams are now. Following this players would be required to play in the local program they live in and recruiting etc would disappear. Dissatisfactions with open enroll and privates would not longer be an issue.

Why do you say that Elliott? Do you think that there is a lot of underlying support for this that is afraid to come out, at least initially?

Might Come Sooner Than Expected

Post by JLS 81 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 3:01 pm

This may come sooner than we all like as budgets for schools keep getting tighter and tighter. The big questions will be how much of an impact it will have at the vey top of MSHSL. As we all full well know they make a pile of capital from the Boys State hockey tournment. Will the MSHSL relenquish this type of financial capital? My guess not without a battle to retain. On the other side of the coin is the growing cost to support and field teams in districts and the dollars being spent. How long will budgets allow for supporting extracirriculars....we will have to see what occurs here in the future. My hope is that we can retain some sembelence of allowing amature sports to be amature sports, thus allowing kids access to playing the great game as we all have come to know it. A triple "A" show down in 2010 is really not my idea of where things should head. One the original intent of amature sport would be somewhat lost in the mix. You would kiss the format we now currently have goodbye forever. It would dramaticlally impact the current state of affairs which IMHO are tainted well enough with "open enrollment".
That said it will be interesting to watch it all play out...will we have a 2010 state tournament under the operation of school budgets? Or will associations be funding the teams? We will just have to see what occurs. As far as associations running things...you may get a bigger beauacracy if USA Hockey runs things!!! If it is MAHA than we are in far better hands. Yet to retain balance and retain the great tradition of Boys State Hockey MAHA would need some "tough tooth" legislation to keep the all too eager Randolph types at bay. If open enrollment was a problem one can imagine what might occur should MSHSL lose it grip on Boys hockey. I fear we would digress to a triple A hode podge of teams and end up developing far less kids than we dare imagine. Sad to say just when single A games are closing the gap!!!

THIS IS THE DUMBEST BILL IN THE WORLD!

Post by hillhockey » Wed Mar 09, 2005 3:04 pm

If the bill passes, the state of hockey will lose its tournament. Attendance will drop, guaranteed. It will no longer be feasible to have it at the Xcel because numbers will be so low.

Another point: High school is not all about sports, but sports are a large part of high school life. Take them away from the school setting, and school would just be plain miserable some days. Most days. We do not want this to happen.

EzCode Parsing Error: size=5]EzCode Parsing Error: size=7]CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES, WRITE LETTERS, DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO STOP THESE IDIOTS BEFORE THEY DESTROY WHAT WE[/font]

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... lhockey at: 3/10/05 3:08 pm

i know a lot of people would not mind seeing this, but it would be the collapse of private schools. They would no longer exist if their students were not allowed to participate in cocurriculars, because a MAJOR emphasis is placed on being involved in your school.

Yes, I do think there are a lot of people within and without the State of Minnesota that would like to run AAA midget teams here. Mnay (if not all) see big $ signs here.

Others believe that the elite players (whatever that is) would be better served by more competitive practice, games etc... and the cost, well thats the price you pay if you want your kid in ... D1 college ride... the NHL.... or whatever other slogan the marketing departemtn comes up with.

That's one thing that scares me a bit about the elite league... while designed to make HS hockey better it also is a step (not intenionally)to developing an outside league that could replcace it.

Also, the Wisconsin fires is raiding(maybe not the best word) players from MN bantam teams. Why not MN high school players? And some leave for juniors - and with more junior teams - Fargo - Alexandria and now Owatonna - close by that jump is not so hard to take in. Setup 8 AAA midget teams play 60 games in league, out of the league and against some junior A teams and what is left in the high school.

And AAU is interested in challenging USA Hockey in thier monopoly over amateur hockey.

Things just seem pretty interesting.

Maybe my point was missed

Post by JLS 81 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 3:50 pm

packerboy,
I was not trying to come off as alarmist only think of many potential things that could occur should MSHSL decide to give up on the boys state high school tournament. What would or could be the ramifications? Would or could USA hockey do a better job? I do not know for certain? Would or could the associations as we know them survive? would triple A rule the upper ecehelons of the amature status ranks here is Minnesota? What could or would happen to outstate hockey and the subsequent associations? Could they surviuve? If it were to change how would and who would regulate? MAHA or USA hockey?? What would happen to the privates?
There is a whole lot of things that could occur. My point is we just do not know what the fallout would be. Maybe associations would run it all better...maybe not. I for one would be curious to know how it would all end up. My fear would be that triple A type teams would be on the rise and this would strip associations of talent maybe not right away but a natural migration would occur to these type of teams. Maybe and hopefully not but you just do not know for certain.
I would be curious to see how people would think it could get better in an age of instant gratification and many parents zest to raise the next D-1 "hot shot". I think our current culture could get this thing unravelled rather quickly but my synical mind needs some rebuttal from the veterans of this forum.

I might be missing something but if those things are going to happen, wont they happen anyway? And sooner if high school hockey doesnt change.

If we brought the high school age players into the community programs and played more games and did other things that the MSHSL wont let hockey do, would we stand a better chance at keeping what we have, albeit in a slightly different form?

If this bill passed would it destroy hockey as we know it or prevent that from happening?

See, my fear is that we cling too closely to what we have and as a result, we lose it.

You may be right. It is a complicated issue. Do you stand and fight? Do you look for a better (different way)?

I don't know the answer, but those of us that are concerned about hockey (even if we have different opinions) need to communicate and have some input in devolping the future.

private school collapse

Post by packerboy » Wed Mar 09, 2005 4:21 pm

hillhockey, CDH had over 600 kids apply for 325 spots for this years incoming class. Naturally, packerboy jr2 was one of the lucky ones to get a spot.

Anyway, I dont think private schools would collapse. They are in big demand and in a lot of cases dont have nearly enough spots to accomodate every one.

It certainly is a lot to chew on and please do not think that my comments on MSHSL in anyway make me a solid backer of the way they are doing things. You guys have addressed it very well in the thread. The future is coming and change is certain...how things will turn? Well we will all just have to see where it all ends up in the long run. Personally I would hate to see the day when my 15 or 16 year old kids have to run to Omaha or Fargo to play hockey because they hold the draft rights....sheesh that sounds pitiful. The kids grow up fast enough as it is and it would be nice to watch them grow up all the way through high school. Anyway if guys like elliot70 are running things to me the league would be in better hands than clueless wonders in MSHSL (by and large).
We will have to see how things transpire here in the future.

i certainly wouldn't like it if hs sports were done with and community programs took over. i wouldn't go to any games then. Who wants to watch people they don't even know. It isn't the same as watching your fellow classmates out on the ice/court/field.

extra curriculars to communities

Post by Knowlze » Wed Mar 09, 2005 5:41 pm

Packerboy sees through the smokescreen on this one. You doom and gloom guys need to see the glass as half full. This bill would have little effect on high school age hockey, except for potential improvement.

The community programs can easily participate in two end of season tournaments at the Excel, MSHSL can run the tournaments if they want. Generally, they have figures out how to run a tournament. They just need to stay out of everything else.

Community programs have done just fine up to and beyond high school sports. In fact, they can more easily address local issues (i.e. if enrollment indicates another team needs to be added, they will). Schools are governed by the state (MSHSL). They cannot make rules that are fair for everyone, even though they think they can. The demographics of each school are different and are better addressed locally.

Don't worry, this bill will not pass because the liberals in the nanny state (Minnesota) need extra-curriculars to use (by threatening to cut back) when more money is desired by schools, just as packerboy stated.
Furthermore, the MSHSL power would also be eliminated. I don't envision that happening very easily.
