This coming season MN Hockey is piloting a new 1:30 min penalty time for girls & youth levels. SEE MINNESOTA HOCKEY WEBSITE.

I have not been a big fan of USA/MN Hockey's foreward thinking in the pass but initial impressions of this rule change are positive. Any rule that keeps more girls on the ice is positive. A rule change that enhances the need for a coach or organization to put more emphasis on developing deeper benches and overall better team skill to win is positive......AND....I love any rule that will lesson the presious practice time coaches waste working on the powerplay & penalty killing.

Good points.

Devil's advocate thought: Will this result in more aggressive/illegal play because of the smaller price of infractions?

I suggest an amendment to the pilot: Leave the 1:30 for all the good reasons you state, but take away the right to ice the puck on the PK so it's harder to kill that 1:30. This way, the 1:30, while shorter, is more painful.

Now we're talkin'......What a concept....HOLDING ONTO THE PUCK,

I think the higher levels have been debating that rule change with the rationale, "Why should a penalized team be given a rule exception to ice the puck". A concern here is that the lower levels will just "ice it" anyway and the resulting whistles during a 1:30 penalty will burn four minutes off the hour clock and the same nine skaters haven't left the ice yet. Maybe it's as simple as changing our learned behavaivor...like we have done with the obstruction rules.
