Career 100+ point scorers

Post by dueling21 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 4:54 pm

Working on a pet project to gather as much of a list as I can of all the players who have ever scored 100 or more points in their high school hockey career in Minnesota (and yes, I know that the number is way into the hundreds and I'll never ever get them all, but it doesn't mean I can't try).

I'm looking for input on the list from all the historical geniuses on the board!

I think I'm pretty good on the 200+ point guys:
405 – Ben Hanowski, Little Falls, 2009
378 - John Pohl, Red Wing, 1998
304 - Dave Spehar, Duluth East, 1996
283 – Joey Benik, St. Francis, 2010
282 – Gino Guyer, Greenway, 2002
273* – John Mayasich, Eveleth, 1951

But under that is when it gets dicey. Some programs have a good list on their websites (Anoka, Brainerd, Eastview, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Rochester Lourdes until 2006, St. Cloud Tech, Tartan, Thief River Falls and Spring Lake Park), but the vast majority do not.

Help?!? 8)

FYI - the lists on the team websites are not always kept up to date.

Anoka actually has 15 - 100 point career scorers (this data came from their 2011-2012 official game program - also included on their website, but included under news & notes - game programs.

Not sure where you are getting the numbers from but I am suspect. As an example, Neal Broten had roughly 125 his senior year alone and was on varsity for at least 4 years. I can find out the number though and let you know.

hockey59-which Anoka team was better? 98 or 03?

Yeah, definitely interested where you got some of these numbers? (not arguing that they are wrong) definitely thought Dan Welch had more career HS pts than Jeff Taffe at Hastings though...

Thanks for the list, hockey 59. I did know that most weren't current, but Anoka's had seemed pretty recently updated. Guess not. That's why it's such a tough task!

Most are from very reputable sources, but the ones with asterisks are truly just that, estimates. If there is better documentation on those guys, I'd love to have it!

FYI - the lists on the team websites are not always kept up to date.

Anoka actually has 15 - 100 point career scorers (this data came from their 2011-2012 official game program - also included on their website, but included under news & notes - game programs.

Since Reg Berg only would have needed to score 44 points as a senior to reach 177 points...most likely he breaks it if he stayed...but he moved on to the USHL.

I believe (but I'm not 100% positive) that the top 4 - Hartje, Magnusson, Alley and Forbes put up their numbers in 3 years; as did O'Neill and Berg...while Hendrick, Reinholz, Scott and Belisle played 4 years of varsity hockey...I believe the others (Jon & Todd) Manthey, Coe, Lester and Miller played 3 years.

It should be noted that the 1998 and 2003 Anoka teams were made up of players from Anoka and Andover (prior to the split) and both were excellent teams...but the edge has to go to the 2003 team because they closed the deal at State.

Reg left early in his jr year and only played 2 1/2 years. Ryan Forbes played 4 yrs. Right on the rest of the players.

Yeah I think you're correct SAT81...I seem to re-call...they were actually playing Reg on D for a while during his junior year (due to no depth at that position) and at some point during his junior year he left (not sure if it was after Christmas break or at the end of the regular season) for the USHL. Certainly at great player...as he proved playing for the Gophers.

Conspicuous by their absence are any dudes, or many dudes, from Moorhead, Hill Murray, Grand Rapids, IFalls, Hibbing, Eveleth, Southwest, Johnson, et al. Not an easy task you've begun.

Guess I was wrong on Welch having more HS PTs than Taffe.

Terry Steinbach as in former MLB catcher? Didn't know he played hockey.

The reason I know the answer to this question is because I moved to Ramsey in the summer of 1994 and my (two houses down the road) neighbor (Mike Johnson) played on the 1994-1995 Anoka MAHA Bantam A State Championship team. Reinholz was a 9th grader in 94-95 and graduated in 1998, but was not a member of this Bantam A team (as he was playing on the high school team).

One name I see missing that should be on there for sure is Matt Niskanen (Virginia - 2005).

I don't have his stats prior to his junior year, but he had these his junior and senior year for sure:

2003-04: 24G, 37A, 61Pts
2004-05: 27G, 38A, 65Pts
