Rankings mean nothing!

Post by ilovethepit »

This goes to show you that rankings mean nothing: Blaine (ranked 9th) beat Centennial (ranked 7th), however Elk River (ranked 13th) beat Blaine which is ranked 9th, on top of that Centennial is still ranked 7th! doesnt make much sense to me? Anybody can win on any given night

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ethepit at: 12/17/05 2:37 pm

That's why they call 'em "Rankings", not "Standings" or "Seedings"

its true, they mean nothing...but people love to see their team ranked well. Kind of gives people a general idea of who will be at state and has a chance to win it...anyone agree?

Well of course they are not standings, i didnt say that. Im just stating that people always get so worked up about what their team is ranked. Many times it is one persons view of what a team should be ranked. Very rarely are teams ranked according to their record, they are ranked by what they are expected to do. It is just stupid politics

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ethepit at: 12/17/05 2:36 pm

ranking

everyone knows the old saying.... the game isn't played on paper... a lower ranked team beating a higher ranked team is exactly why we play the game.

Why are we getting so worked up over who beat who, this team beat this team so they HAVE TO beat this team. It is high school hockey, 50-60% of the teams could win on any given night.
Moorhead sets a new state tournament record!

rankings

Post by mathrunner »

In addition the thing that you are forgetting is that in the beginning of the season, last years' season is taken into account. That's why AHA was number 1 when they were 0-0-0. And there's a lot more taken into account than just who they played and if they won or not.

Next time you look at the "rankings", note the number of first place votes in parenthesis. It is FIVE. FIVE people decide the rankings of hundreds of hockey teams. Most of it is name recognition and bias. Until they get a better ranking system (coaches or AD's from around the state) it means nothing to me, no matter where my two teams (Centennial and Moorhead) are ranked.
