High School Hockey Coaches with 300+ wins

Post by northstars » Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:03 pm

Little Falls head hockey coach Tony Couture recorded his 300 win with the Flyers on Friday night beating Fergus Falls 5 to 1. Couture is in his 20th year as head coach of the Flyers.

Who are the other coaches that have recorded at least 300 wins in their career? Edina's Wilard Ikola I believe has the most at 616.

The ones that immediately come to mind:

Lorne Grosso, Rochester Mayo--I believe he has now passed Ikola
Tom Saterdalen, Bloomington Jefferson
Roy Nystrom, Albert Lea (maybe not all in MN, though?)
Mike Randolph, Duluth East
Tony Sarsland, Elk River (though he doesn't have as many wins as the record books claim he does)
Bill Lechner, Hill-Murray
Terry Skyrpek, Hill-Murray
Dave Morinville, Moorhead

Grosso did pass Ikola in 2011 against JM and 94 wins for Nystrom came in North Dakota.

Larry Ross (International Falls) ranks way up there somewhere, maybe No. 3?

He had 566 wins, 169 losses and 21 ties, and his teams went to 13 (single class) state tournaments, winning 6.

Wow, Lechner has that many losses. I'm guessing a lot of them came from his previous location.

Hey Pioneers, can you give us Skyrpek's year by year record at HM? Just curious how his last few years compared to Lech's first few.

I was shocked to see a losing record for Lech in 2001. Do you recall if there were any issues that year?

Here is the history of coaches at Hill snd H-M These came from the hmpioneers.net site Great site for H-M history. 2001 was a tough year. Very weak defensively. They scored plenty of goals, but gave them up even faster.

Oscar Almquist

Post by RoseauHockeyFan » Tue Dec 11, 2012 3:02 pm

Here's what it says about Oscar Almquist from his US Hockey Hall of Fame page:

"When Almquist gave up coaching to become strictly athletic director and high school principal, his teams had posted a record of 404 wins, 148 losses, and 21 ties., including a 49-game winning streak from 1957-1959. A member of the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame, the "Big-O" was truly a "Giant of the North."

Randolph is currently stuck at 299. If things go according to plan he should get to 300, thursday, vs rival Cloquet.

No, he's at 499 going on 500. He joined the 300-win club long ago.
