Conflict of Interest?

Post by summer » Mon Dec 17, 2012 6:03 pm

Is it a conflict of interest if a boys high school coach is coaching sons of coaches coaching his daughter in youth hockey?

There is one boy getting the most ice time with very little points to show for it, and his father is a coach for the high school coach's daughter, detirmining her ice time.

The high school coach was an assistant coach for his daughter's team last year at the same time he was coaching the high school team. There are at least four other families that have siblings on both teams, so where there is familiarity could there be favoritism? And conflict of interest?

The circumstances don't sound all that unusual, particularly in smaller towns/associations. Looking for hidden reasons why your little Johnny isn't getting the ice time that you think he deserves? =;

Leaving aside the issue of whether there is favoritism being shown, what would you propose as a remedy?

Did anyone else with any qualifications apply to coach the team?? Its impossible to eliminate all perceptions. also do not just rely on Points as a measuring tool to base talent. also - maybe i missed it, but what age level we talking about here?? maybe if their still little kids (lets say 12 and under) its all equal anyway ?

If you want the real answer, ask the coach in question.

Thanks for the replies, I have no skin in the game, just looks a little odd. The talk is that the girls coach is threatening to take the boys out of the program if they are not played on varsity.

Sounds like the parent - or better yet the player if they are high school age - needs to talk with the coach, of course in an adult manner....

Sounds like you have a real good source, maybe a disgruntled parent? I'm sure if they are not playing on the varsity they will pull them out, get real!

The short answer is yes...if the coaching HS coach's direction is to establish relations with the coaches coaching his daughter with the intent of the other coaches son's benefit...than obviously the coaching HS coach's daughter is benefiting from the other coaches protecting their sons. It's all in the MN hock handbook.
