I explicitly remember Freshman Dave Spehar scoring two goals in one shift at the start of the 3rd period for East, then Jeff Tiedeman and Ted Suihkonen responded for Virginia later in the period to sew up the win. Virginia was the 4 seed, and East the 5 seed. I remember Randolph complaining about being seeded behind Virginia and having to play on the road. Cloquet was the top seed that year and they ousted Virginia 2-0 in the semi's.

cloquet beat virginia that year 3-0 in the semi's then went on to avenge their only loss of the year to Denfeld by beating them 7-2. And then promptly got beat by Moorhead 6-5 in the quarters.

I think Boblee's seeding predictions will be very close. Toss up with Brainerd and Cloquet. The #2 seed may come down to the rematch in CEC. Man I have been waiting it seems FOREVER for Rapids to even be in discussion for the #1 seed. Damn this is sweet.

Martell played impressively. He came back from his injury a lot better and quicker than I would have imagined.

I like the little Kurr(Sp) kid also. The goalie (Siefiert??) looked good also (poised).
And I LIKE Sarsland.

Lee is right about East and their D (at least in theis game).

I think Boblee has the seedings nailed. Grand Rapids just has to win the big games coming up and it is theirs.

Oh, and I like my crow medium well.

I only caught a few minutes of this game. Just wondering the name of Duluth East's #17?

I saw some nice hustle from #17, but I only saw a few minutes of this game.

I thought that he played well too. Robbie A. Johnson played okay too (#21 I believe). Turnbull got a little bit too greedy with the puck (#14). Leis was very good again, but he would have had to post a shutout to win. What an odd number Leis wears...63.

_________________

BOB

That made it 3-1 with 5:03 to go, but Seibert and the Elks said "no more" to the Iron Range visitors.

You can just sense Sarslands intensity in his comment about seedings and winning three games and not making a difference if it's at home on the road or on the moon. That guy cracks me up. pun intended.

I have to agree, flaherty looked quite good. he is very consistent, and plays basic fundamental hockey. I heard that he has drawn interest from the NDTP. I cant confirm it as truth, but it wouldn't suprise me. Turnbull over handled the puck no doubt. I did notice that he is virtually alone when his wings can't catch a pass, or they don't finish a golden opportunity. He needs to bare down and just work hard. I saw that Randolph tried to make some adjustments with his line, but it was to no avail. Though East may be young, I think heart and toughness are missing at this point. The pathetic play of the defense does not help the situation or the team moral. Leis is playing very well, and will continue to improve. I feel changes are coming for the defensive corps. The saga continues...

Sarslands postgame interview just goes to show all the haters what he and his program are all about. The man is about teaching kids good hockey and some critical life lessons. Although he may not always be a class act i love his blue collar style and his hockey heart. He gets rid of the nonsense and exposes his kids to what good old fashoned hockey is all about.

East

Post by EHS2006 » Wed Jan 04, 2006 2:34 pm

East needs to put it together starting now as a first period team, and first goal team. They are not pumping themselfs up enough to get into the game until they are down in the 3rd period and try to make a come back. They need to come out shooting, and start putting the game away early, or at least not letting other teams walk all over them in the first period. The defense i think is pretty solid. Downing is a force to be messed with and is a very smart player(nice shot too), they need some hustle that was lacking in last nights game. Leis is playing strong, but the rebounds are killing him. If Leis could hold onto that puck and not give away so many rebounds he would be a top goalie in the section.

perhaps you need to look at how many times the D coughs up the puck in their own zone. every one of their D can be walked quite easily, and I have never seen so many D fall down while skating backwards. A force? You better see the whole game. Downing is the best of a poor group. The upside is, that the D played much better last year, and hopefully will pull their heads in time. If they counted assists for turn over goals, a defenseman would be leading the team in scoring!

As I'm new to this board, I sure hope that kids on these
teams that are mentioned by name or referred to as part of a
group (defense) don't read these messages too often or
feel like I do for them....pretty sad, especially when you know how hard they work to get better everyday. Every team often
has a weakness, it's easy to see where East's is this year; however I believe we could all leave off indivdual names
when stating a point of negativity.

Queen Bee,
I think that these boys are at the stage of life that the warm and fuzzy feel good philosophy needs to go. Players that cannot handle reality are being set up to fail, Of course these kids are working hard in practice. The point is, is that these kids are capable of playing much better, and are big under achievers. Now is not the time to coddle, but rather the time to pull your head and start playing to your potential.

I think her point is that they are kids and not professional athletes. We all take it a bit too far in thinking that "free speech" gives us the right to blast some kid(s) for not playing at a level we feel is up to our standards. Keep things in perspective.

Knowing Downey & Trachsal, I think they both would admit that they did not have a good game against ER.
I know they are both very capable of playing better than they did in that game.

Point well taken, but on the flip side of "freedom of speech" an earlier post said that a certain player is a force to be reckoned with... He obviously has his opinion about the player, just because he has a positive opinion doesn't make it a crime to disagree. Ultimately, they are only opinions. For anyone to take to heart what is written about them, whether positve or negative as the gospel, will go crazy with the rollercoaster of self doubt and or swelled head syndrome. Ultimately, sometimes we as humans do not like to hear about our short comings. Perhaps I am just a dinosaur that feels that sugar coating anything is a ticket to failure. Just my opinion. I respect your opinion as well as everyone, I think that is the key.

Thanks Northlander - I personally do not think the "pumping up" is any better than the "beating down" for a kid. Let them be kids and when they are getting paid we can all get on or off their bandwagon. Just my thoughts also.
