hockeymanyeah ... maybe you should check your history books before making a comment like that. Unless you went to the school in question ... which I doubt ... but I'm thinking you went to the public school in Crookston ... you should quit looking at your Region 8A program (book that they sell at the tournament) and listen to us alumni of Crookston Cathedral.

Let me explain.

Crookston had five high schools at the same time believe it or not. The Agassiz School (which is now U of M - Crookston), St. Joseph's Academy, Crookston Central, Crookston Cathedral and Corbett College (which was actually a catholic girls high school).

Since I am an alumnus of Crookston Cathedral I know what the hell I'm talking about - trust me.

But ... before you think I'm jumping down your throat ... I want to thank you for bringing this up ... because you are partially right.

The "Ag" school became the college ... St. Joseph's Academy shut down and combined with the Corbett school to become known as "The Mount". Crookston Cathedral was an all-boy school before combining with "The Mount" in 1968. At that time ... the school was still known as Crookston Cathedral in the hockey world but soon became known as "Mount-Cathedral" and also known as Mt. St. Benedict Academy during the latter half of the last decade of it's existence.

Us hockey players from that school prefer the moniker "Crookston Cathedral" because of the tradition in hockey its' name elicits.

So ... if you are not from Crookston ... and you looked up the story that I related about us playing against Roseau in the Section Championships ... you are right ... they called our team "Mt. St. Benedict".

But us hockey players prefer to be remembered as Crookston Cathedral ... much the same way as Greenway Coleraine prefers to be remembers as "Greenway" and not Coleraine.

It's a personal thing.

So ... as you know (and I take no offense to your legitimate comment) ....

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> - "I've got my history straight" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

The Crookston Cathedral 'Blue Wave' is the team that beat the division one powerhouse the SIOUX from the University Of North Dakota! That's who...

Love, Slapshooter. Ole Slaphappy is right!! Crookston Cathedral did beat the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota. As a matter of fact ... their all time career record vs. UND remained at .500.

During those years Crookston Cathedral had a hard time finding quality opponents as they used to literally pound Roseau, Warroad, Thief River Falls, and the Grand Forks teams.

While those other teams were allowed to "go to state" by the Minnesota State High School League, Cathedral was held back at the reins only to search and destroy those that dared step in its' path.

Finally, Cathedral coach Sergio Gambucci challenged the "Fighting Sioux" and UND accepted. UND coach Don Norman was at a loss for words as he witnessed his team fall to the mighty "Blue Wave". (And "yes" slaphappy .... all those involved were Catholic).

I can't think of any other High School team that can lay that claim to fame (playing a Division I powerhouse and beating them).

Sergio Gambucci came to northwest Minnesota from Eveleth. He coached Cathedral before moving over to Grand Forks in 1960 to coach those great unbeaten Grand Forks Central Redskins teams. While Gambucci lived in Crookston he brought over some "ringers" from the Iron Range - namely Pat Finnegan and completed the roster for the Crookston Senior Pirates who incidently won the National Amateur Hockey Championship against a team from New York in 1950 or 1951.

As I have mentioned before ... you won't see "Crookston" in any print in your State Tournament Programs; thanks to the brilliant foresight of the MSHSL.

Cathedral was in the league for only 6 years (1975-80). At that time it was the second smallest school in the state (behind Indus). In 1977 when they lost to Roseau to go to the MSHSL sponsored state tournament in the Section 8 Championship game, they had a total of 39 boys in the whole school (grades 9-12). 30 of them played hockey. Many of those 30 were damned good players too.

Does that answer your question hockeymanyeah1 regarding ... "Who the hell Crookston Cathedral is?"

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> - "Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form on inert facts." -- Hannibal Lector, Silence of the Lambs

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil"> - "Put the lotion on the skin..." -- Buffalo Bill, Silence of the Lambs

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/uvideoscout.sh ... eoscout at: 3/23/02 12:00:23 am

Not beat truck, but beet truck.

Ever try to BOX with a BEET TRUCK? That is what I meant to say above when describing my apprehension towards finding yourself on the 'wrong side' of Gary Sargent in a Hockey Game. A little 'Spell Check' never hurt anyone, but you know how it is. Re:Clarification on Crookston Cathedral Blue Wave.Dynamite!

Excellent Again Video Scout! regarding your story on the Mighty 'Blue Wave' of Crookston Cathedral! Crookston Cathedral Grade School ( grades 1 through 8 ) was the only school in Crookston where the nuns would allow enough time for the boys to 'lace up' for a quick game of hockey for recess as well as lunch hour, and every boy in the class, whether in a league or not, would be out on the ice playing the game until the nuns finally blew the whistle to get back for class. Of course nobody would be on the bench during those games so you might have up to fourteen or more players on a side, all out on the ice at the same time, depending on the size of your class. A good place to hone your stick handling abilities as well as your speed. A lot of rivalry in those games too as the boys were keeping track of their win, loss records in those hard fought twenty minute games. The interesting thing was,(among other things)
that the kids refereed themselves and there was rarely, if ever, any disagreements among the players. At least none that a good fist fight or shoving match couldn't resolve, and if it came to that, the nuns would usually let the the boys resolve any disputes on their own terms without tossing anyone out of the game or school. No Social Workers in site in those days or Counselors to
'dilute' the intensity of those match's. Anyway, loved the story on the 'Mighty Blue Wave' of Crookston Cathedral.

Love, Slapshooter. ( a legend in his own mind ) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

P.S. Many of those games were played in well below zero temps with even colder wind chill factors as the grade school was located right next to central park where three outdoor full size rinks were waiting. Those were the days when you played strictly for the LOVE of the GAME! Frozen toes and all...
