Minnesotans on Rosters of D1 Minnesota Schools

Post by The Exiled One » Tue Nov 26, 2013 12:02 pm

Gophers: 21
Bulldogs: 19
Huskies: 11
Beavers: 9
Mavericks: 6

By comparison, Air Force has 11 Minnesotans on its roster and Nebraska-Omaha has 7.

Just wanted to throw this out for the MNHSL fans to see if anybody has an opinion on out-of-state recruiting. Obviously, UMTC and UMD are looking in-state first and are landing a bunch of their targets. SCSU grabs at least as many Minnesotans as any out-of-state school, but it's a fair amount less than half their roster. I know they've attempted to land a few Minnesota kids in the recent past who ultimately ended up elsewhere... about half of them ending up out-of-state.

You list Penn State as having zero players from MN but to my knowledge Eric Scheid (Blaine High School), Nate Jensen (Minnetonka High School), and Max Gardiner (made it to the state title game with Minnetonka High School right???) are all from Minnesota. Your numbers appear to be inaccurate based just on that. Where do you get your data?? Just trying to clarify, not being a jerk here.....

Well, it looks like nobody is bothered that the Huskies, Beavers, and Mavericks tend to look out-of-state as much as in-state. I suppose that's just as well, because it opens up a lot of opportunity for Minnesotans to experience college hockey life outside the state of hockey. At the same time, it allows for multiple, highly-competitive colleges within the state.

Not surprising, as traditionally the Gophers have tended to land the most highly touted (although not necessarily the best) guys from in-State. I think the other coaches are at a little bit of a disadvantage in this respect and realize they need to look elsewhere to supplement the Minnesota kids they do get.

I agree with this take. While there clearly are a number of eligible in state players that does not mean those players are "impact players" for those schools. My guess is UMD, and the Gophs land most of the "impact players" for the in state schools, many of the other "impact players" from MN likely look to higher profile schools like Wisconsin and North Dakota etc... thus the Beavs and Huskies and Mavericks etc.... probably need to look outside the state to try and land players who can have that type of "impact" and allow them to compete at a high level, my guess is that if they went with solely in state players they would be often be getting the "left overs" or just "role players" with few to no impact players that would allow them to compete at a high level... hope that makes sense

Indeed. Funny thing is, the Huskies graduated (or lost) four Minnesotans from last season's Frozen Four team, three of whom were clearly "impact" players (LeBlanc, Hanowski, Jensen). This season, SCSU has a couple of impact Minnesotans who simply flew under the radar of the other Minnesota schools (Brodzinski and Prochno). The other impact players (Dowd, Morley, Faragher, Gravel) are from out-of-state. Basically, it seems like SCSU's recruiting reputation is on the rise overall, just not in the state. See the three Finns and one Finnish recruit as evidence.

Mankato, on the other hand, seems to be doing better with in-state talent. In particular, I'm thinking about Zach Stepan, Hunter Warner, and C.J. Franklin. I think that might just be the effect of Hastings recruiting what and where he knows best.

Bemidji is just Bemidji.

I think impact players will still slip to Mankato and SCSU from in-state, but probably because the player became highly desirable after the Gophers no longer had room. Mitch Slattery is probably a good example of that. Avery Peterson could have been an example, but I'm not counting any recruit of Dean Blais. UNO is NOT a place you play at, Blais is simply a coach you play FOR.

As for highly touted sophomores and freshmen, I don't think there are any that would jump at the chance to be a Husky quite yet... maybe after a Natty or two. ;)

Winning consistantly raises your profile which raises your level of recruiting. I can see where SCSU is probably on that trend and don;t get me wrong, I am not saying "zero" impact players from in state go to those schools they probably are just at a point where they cannot get ENOUGH of them and hence have to go to out of state recruiting to suppplement.......

With Stepan, I wouldn't really say Mankato and Hastings "landed him", it was more of a function of Oseicki leaving Ohio St. and him decommiting from there and wanting to go to the U and them not having any roster spots available at the time. For Warner, I don't think he will be a major "impact player" but time will certainly tell.
