Class AA – Lower Bracket
#5 Mounds View 2, #4 Lakeville North 3 (3 OT's)

Dani Sadek capped a great game, scoring the winner for Lakeville North in the third overtime period, to finally put an end to what was a thrilling 3-2 contest pitting the No. 4 and 5 seeded teams in Class AA. Up until Sadek's winning goal, both teams had numerous great chances to win it, but the Panthers' Abby Cooper and the Mustangs' Mary Dingman kept coming up with great saves to keep the score knotted at two apiece, until Sadek finally broke through early into the 3rd overtime.

In our contest 19 of 27 had the Panthers winning, and there were a total of seven who correctly predicted their winning 3-2 score: Knight7, clutterbucket, ted2you, wolfman, Silent But Deadly, MNHockeyFan (yeah, finally!) and MinnGirlsHockey.

Our leader - ted2you, who is a rookie but up until this point is looking like a seasoned veteran all-star - predicted 3 of the 8 quarterfinal scores for a batting average of .375, which is clearly up there in Joe Mauer territory! Very impressive start, ted2you, but with the real important games coming up, can you keep it going :?: For now at least, ted2you can enjoy his narrow one point lead:

1. ted2you - 27

2. Sparlimb - 26
clutterbucket - 26
Maverick2000 - 26
Silent But Deadly - 26
blondegirlsdad - 26

7. hockeybozo - 24

Class A Upper Bracket - Semifinal
#2 Blake 5, #3 Red Wing 4 (2OT)

Blake's sophomore standout Carly Bullock scored 38 seconds into the 2nd overtime to win in for the Bears in an exciting, hard fought battle between two very talented, Class A teams. For Bullock it was her second goal of the game, while the Wingers were led by Ms. Hockey finalist and Minnesota State Mankato recruit Nicole Schammel who had two goals and an assist. Shots on goal, at 33-32, reflect how even this game was throughout.

23 of our 27 contestants forecasted Blake would win the semifinal matchup, and in so doing earn 5 points each.

Class AA - Consolation
Roseau 3, Mounds View 4 (2 OT)

Both Consolation games today go to OT, this one double OT, with the Mustangs' Bailey Thompson scoring the winner at 11:18. It will be Andover vs. Mounds View for the Consolation Championship, and 4 points to those here who correctly predicted who wins.

Class A Lower Bracket Semifinal
St. Paul United 2, #1 East Grand Forks 3

St. Paul United's Alev Baysoy scored twice in the first period to put her team up 2-0, but East Grand Forks mounted a third period comeback, scoring twice on the power play, to pull out the win. After making it a one goal game in the first period, Alexa Mack got the game winner with 3:39 to play. The top seeded Green Wave move on to face #2 Blake in tomorrow's championship game.

The result was no surprise to our group, as 25 predicted a Green Wave win and pick up 5 points each. Heading into tonight's Class AA semi's, ted2you maintains his one point lead:

1. ted2you - 37

2. Sparlimb - 36

Class AA Upper Bracket Semifinal:
#2 Hill-Murray 1, # 3 Eden Prairie 0

Class AA Lower Bracket Semifinal:
#1 Benilde-St. Margaret's 2, #4 Lakeville North 1

It's down to #1 vs. #2 in both Class A and AA. In today's semi's all four games were decided by a single goal, with one requiring OT to determine the winner. Can't get much more exciting than that!

And, for the first time since the MSHSL went to two classes, there will be a private school champion in AA. Since everyone knows the story lines in these games - and since it's very late - I'll get right to our contest.

In the first semi 20 of 27 had H-M advancing, but unfortunately for me I am not in that group...which absolutely crushes my dreams of winning this last contest of the year! Oh well, sometimes it's just not meant to be...

In the second game 24 liked the No. 1 seeded Red Knights to win...but it wasn't easy by any means. With a bounce or two the Panthers could have easily pulled the upset.

In tomorrow's championship games our group is pretty evenly split, so whoever gets both games right (20 points) AND a Third Place/Consolation winner or two - or it might even take three, it's that close - will come out on top. In total, there are 36 points up for grabs in Saturday's six games.

1. ted2you - 47

2. Sparlimb - 46
clutterbucket - 46
Silent But Deadly - 46

5. hockeybozo - 44
Nimrod - 44
fishfreak11 - 44
sinbin - 44

9. wolfman - 43
capitalpride - 43
MinnGirlsHockey - 43

12. Misterright - 41
Maverick2000 - 41

16. D16Dad - 39

17. Knight7 - 38
MNHockeyFan - 38
D6 Girls Fan - 38
spars46 - 38
hugo_lucas - 38

22. FishEye - 35
hockeyfan87 - 35

24. Two with 33

26. One with 32...

and, of course:

Class A Third Place
#3 Red Wing 5, #5 St. Paul United 2

Nicole Schammel scored twice and Reagan Haley added a goal and two assists for the Class A Third Place Wingers. Alev Baysoy scored both goals for St. Paul United, which had a slight 23-20 edge in shots on goal.

17 of our prognosticators correctly predicted that Red Wing would eventually end up as the 3rd Place winner, and these 17 add 4 points each. Among the point gainers are Sparlimb, clutterbucket and Silent But Deadly, who are tied at 50 points and at least temporarily take the lead from ted2you. Now tied for 2nd, at 48 points each, are hockeybozo, Nimrod, fishfreak11 and sinbin.

Should be an interesting final day, both on the ice and in our contest.

Class A Consolation Championship
#4 Proctor/Hermantown 4, Alexandria 1

Sophie McGovern scored twice, including what proved to be the winning goal at 6:15 of the 3rd period, to lead the Mirage to the Consolation Championship.

There were 11 who had Proctor/Hermantown winning this game, and those 11 include our three leaders - Sparlimb, clutterbucket and Silent But Deadly, who remain tied for the lead at 54 points each, two ahead of their closest competition.

Class AA Consolation Championship
Andover 1, #5 Mounds View 0

Mikayla Goodin broke a scoreless tie with just 1:42 remaining to win the Consolation Championship for the Andover Huskies. In goal Maddie Rooney stopped all 18 of Mounds View's shots to earn the shutout.

Only 4 in our group saw Andover winning Consolation, and among our leaders just Sparlimb got it right and adds 4.

Class A State Championship
#2 Blake 3, #1 East Grand Forks 2

Sylvie Wallin scored the tying goal, and then the winner less than three minutes apart in the third period, capping a three goal comeback as the Blake Bears win the Class A State Championship over the top-seeded East Grand Forks Green Wave. Alex Lovaas got the primary assist on both of Wallin's goals, with sophomore standout Carly Bullock also assisting on both and scoring Blake's earlier goal in the second period which started the Bears' comeback. Haley and Alexa Mack scored for East Grand Forks to put the Green Wave up 2-0 in the 1st. But maybe the No. 1 star of the game was Blake's 8th grade goaltender Anna Kruesel, who came up huge repeatedly to not only keep her team within reach but also to preserve the lead later on as East Grand Forks applied tremendous pressure towards the end. Kruesel finished with 29 saves on 31 shots, many of which were from point-blank range.

Just 8 of 27 picked Blake to win and they add a big 10 points each. One of them was Nimrod, who as a result takes over 1st place with 62 points. Another big mover since yesterday is Maverick2000 who also picked Blake and in addition got both the Class A 3rd Place and Consolation winners correct. He jumps all the way from a tie for 12th to all alone in 2nd. Like so many of the actual games in this year's tournaments, our contest is going down to the wire. And there are 14 points still out there...

1. Nimrod - 62

2. Maverick2000 - 59

3. Sparlimb - 58

4. Misterright - 55
blondegirlsdad - 55

6. clutterbucket - 54

Class AA Third Place
#4 Lakeville North 5, #3 Eden Prairie 1

Lakeville North bounces back from a close semifinal loss to #1 Benilde to defeat Eden Prairie and take home the 3rd Place trophy. Goal scorers for the Panthers were Maddie McGlade, who scored two, and Dani Sadek, Alexis Joyce and Heidi Winiecki with one each. Sadek also had two assists for a three point game. Abby Cooper stopped all but one of the Eagles' 16 shots to secure the win.

In our contest this game proved pivotal. Sparlimb was one of only five who predicted that Lakeville North would win 3rd Place, and the 4 points enabled him to tie Nimrod for the lead headed into this evening's Championship Game. And one of these two is assured of being the winner, as Sparlimb predicted Hill-Murray would ultimately prevail whereas Nimrod has BSM winning it all. So our contest boils down to the last game, which in these two very exciting tournaments only seems fitting. I'll post the final point totals later this evening; in the meantime, thanks to everyone for participating and making this fun for all.

Class AA State Championship
#2 Hill-Murray 5, #1 Benilde-St. Margaret's 3

Jess Bonfe scored two goals and Sarah Bobrowski added a goal and an assist, leading the Hill-Murray Pioneers to their first girls' State Championship. Just as important, the Pioneers' defensive corps was stifling, limiting Benilde-St. Margaret's high-octane offense to relatively few quality scoring chances. The Red Knights captain and leading scorer, Kelly Pannek, did manage to break through on three occasions, getting the hat trick. Congratulations to the entire Hill-Murray team and coaching staff on a job well done!

And, all considered, I believe this was one of the best-played, most competitive state tournaments - in both classes - in state history. Congratulations to all of the girls who were fortunate enough to have participated.

In the combined opinion of our panel, Hill-Murray's win was somewhat of an upset, as the majority (17 of 27) thought BSM's would emerge as State Champ. But there were 7 would picked the Pioneers to win it, and among those was Sparlimb, who wins this year's "2014 State Tournament - Pick the Winners Challenge". Congrats to Sparlimb on HIS championship - very well done! And a tip of the hat to Maverick2000, who closed real strong to finish all alone in 2nd, just three points behind our leader. And also to Misterright for coming in 3rd - his best finish of the year. Now if he could only teach his twin brother a thing or two...

I too would like to thank MNHockeyFan for the great season long contests. Perhaps the surgeons will finally separate me from Mister right this year and I will be free to pick anyone in the future.

If it's a case of you two being Siamese twins you would think the right hand would know what the left hand is doing! Or maybe the right hand is a bully and always wants his way? Whatever, thanks for adding a bit of levity this season! :)
