Old Time Hockey - Chicken Wire

Post by atthepoint » Sat Nov 15, 2003 8:13 pm

The other night I was discussing with a friend of mine things gone by the way in hockey.

Most of today's kids learn to play and play all their games in some pretty fine venues. Most will never have the experience of playing a game in a rink with chicken wire above the dasher. For the fun of it, where is the last rink anyone can remember where a high school team played with chicken wire instead of Plexiglas?

I used to make good use of that surface with opponents.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... hepoint at: 11/15/03 8:15 pm

Mt. St. Charles
Mount St. Charles Academy in Rhode Island still plays in a rink with chain link fence at both ends instead of plexiglass. Needless to say, this causes quite a few interesting bounces.

chix galore!

I grew up as a young kid in Crookston playing with chicken wire. It made for some interesting make-up jobs on the faces of certain players, as their were no face masks when I was a "Northland Crackshot" ($ 0.99 hockey stick, mind you) owner.

I think Devils Lake, ND was the last place I played where there was chicken wire, although I remember playing in a couple of crazy places up in Winnipeg akin to the Chamber of Horrors (and I don't mean Sean).

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> - "Chicken wire is by no means the same thing as a chain-link fence ... chain-link fences couldn't cut your face like the thinner cousin could!"

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> - wish me well in Reykjavik!

Videoscout my little buddy, I was worried that you had disappeared from the board. Postings have been a little boring but should pick up this week as the season officially gets underway.

Anyway, back to the topic. I do believe Baudette's rink had chicken wire as late as the middle 80's. Not as bad as the old Gardens in Warroad with no Plexiglas on the sideboards. This definitely kept the spectators along the boards alert for flying pucks and elbows. Also a little home ice advantage for the Warriors getting a little help from the locals with a little clutch and grab on the oppenent.

Ram Hockey

chickenwire

Post by rams1981 » Mon Nov 17, 2003 3:10 pm

Ha-Ha great topic, I remember the sleeve of my jersey getting caught on the chickenwire in Hallock and getting a nasty cut trying to get loose. I must have tugged for a good ten seconds before I yanked that sucker and it bit me good.
