Girls locker rooms versus boys locker rooms
Curious what different teams have for their girl's locker rooms. Is it comparable to the boys? Does JV have their own? Co-ops, do you share costs on improvements? Reason...up here in the Hinder-lands our program is just beginning to get our own locker rooms after 16 years of existstance. We have had public locker rooms that have to be vacated when needed for various reasons. We're a coop, with two rinks. Nothing malicious why we haven't had one...but more or less a by-product of the way things have always been and having to move rinks every other week. Some people still believe they shouldn't be equals in regard to amenities. Anyone with glaring disparities? Worth causing a kerfuffle over?

Of course the girls should have equal amenities to the boys. I would assume this is the case throughout the State. Your situation may be a little different though if you have two rinks and are only there every other week. That's a lot of wasted locker room space when you're not there, unless the Arena has lots of extra locker rooms.Hard water fan wrote:Curious what different teams have for their girl's locker rooms. Should we mention the $700,000 H-M just raised to build new locker rooms and an elevator in a public owned facility? My assumption is they will be shared with the boys and girls teams, although the article is lacking in that information.

Wait, wait, wait... Hill Murray's home rink is Aldrich?? Bill Halbreder has been saying for years that Aldrich Arena doesn't give Hill-Murray any home field advantage for sections because they mostly practice elsewhere...And moving the section playoffs to different locations would be crazy, and would just give other schools a home rink advantage...Do you suppose HM will be able to keep their locker room at this so-called neutral site when the rooms are finished??

When you say Public locker rooms, did the girls actually have to dress with strangers while getting ready for practices and games? I think you would have a case to present to the School Board in that event.Hard water fan wrote:Curious what different teams have for their girl's locker rooms. Is it comparable to the boys? Hill does not have a school board (elected) - they are a private school.
They have a Board of Trustees and a Foundation.
If the newspaper article is correct, the girls program was left out of the plan.

The addition of two new locker rooms on the west side of Aldrich Arena should be completed in mid-December. The county-owned arena is located at 1850 White Bear Ave., Maplewood.
The addition also will include coaching offices, shower rooms and laundry facilities.
The new locker rooms will accommodate the Hill-Murray varsity as well as the junior varsity hockey teams.

No Froggy, by public I meant not their own- you know... the kind you get when you book ice. We will have our own next year, but it seems that like other programs the boys rooms are far superior to the girls. The MSHSL handbook on title IX is clear about locker room equality...even in amenities. We just wanted our own and some bathroom facilities.
BSM Girls Locker Room was far superior to the Boys at Saint Louis Park Arena. That was made possible by a donor (Press) otherwise it never would have happened. I heard that Tonka Girls just got remodeled their Locker Room! Made possible by a very active Blue Line Club...Raise the money, get it done, quit the whining!
Girls locker rooms
My daughter plays for a co-op. They practice at a different country arena than they play at, and don't have their own locker room. Between practices they either haul their gear home, or leave it in an unheated shed inside the arena, so if it's especially cold their gear is frozen. The only ice time the county would give them was 3-5, so the junior high girls on the team that don't get out of school until 3:15 miss half the ice time.
For the most part, the boys in the same district practice where they play games, have their own lockers, and can leave their gear in a heated space.
All in all, it's a pretty awesome setup for the girls.

Not whining pan. Please realize that the MSHSL is very clear in what programs need to provide for compliance. Booster money can be used, but in the end it is the school districts responsibility. Sponsors are sometimes harder to come by for girls programs, that's why it is clear that funding comes from the school if needed. Now if you are in a rural location, it can be even more difficult. In order to be compliant, the quality, availability, maintenance, exclusivity and preparation should be equal.Google MSHSL compliance and you can read it.
Our booster program has put together funds to help pay for the remodeling of an existing locker room. We asked for financial participation from the school, which they happily agreed to, so we are appreciative that next year our girls will have a shower, toilet, sink, lockers and a sign on the door. Through this, we realized that others may have similar circumstances...and that it doesn't have to be that way. As the saying goes: You can't call her a girl hockey player- she's a hockey player who happens to be a girl.
