First glance at girls AA I wonder why Chaska/Chan isn't on list or why Lakeville South isn't above North?

Once again the top teams all play each other, so #1 at the end of the season will earn it. HM plays 8 of the top 12 teams (and they are one of the 4 they aren't playing). They don't play Tonka, Hopkins or Mounds View during the regular season. Although they might get Roseville or Mounds View in the Kaposia classic, assuming those teams are still in it.

Going to put this (Kaposia bracket) here because I never can find it come holiday time:

5 of top 10 are scheduled to play in EP holiday tourney. While 7 of the 8 participants are ranked in top 17 teams in AA should be some good hockey!

LPH hockey rankings share a lot with figure skating judging. Results are based as much on what you've done in the past (as in last year) as what you are doing now. How are Minnetonka and Edina ranked higher than Roseau? Roseau's tie with International Falls occurred after the tally. The same prejudice goes for Blake over Breck (undefeated at the time of the poll).

Could be a little truth to that, but then we see Dodge County (no wins over top teams) and Maple Grove (only one win over a ranked team) ranked higher than Tonka, for example, which would have everything to do with what they've done recently. Tonka has basically played only ranked teams, winning all of them easily, and happened to stumble once against a very good Roseau team. We can get into the SOS debate again, but I think there is a lot to it. We've seen time and again where teams with gaudy records against average opponents lose at the end of the year when they finally have to play a top-tier team, while teams with less pristine records against top-tier teams during the season win out at the end.

Should H-M have dropped out of the top 20 after starting the season 0-2 when we're all pretty sure that they'll be near the top at the end? That's what using recent experience would force you to do. But we all know better than that. Should Roseau be ranked higher after nice wins over Tonka and Edina, but then a loss to Class A Breck? Maybe. EP has certainly earned their top spot, both by playing top teams and by winning, and is probably the only team that you can't argue about their current ranking. So, it's much more multi-dimensional than past history vs. current results and each voter has his/her personal biases and rationale.

Again, the teams that win at the end don't much care what their ranking is at the beginning of the season. Yes, it's nice when a high ranking happens for the first time and it helps build excitement and perhaps confidence, but I'll always take the February ranking over the November ranking.

In defense to Dodge County they did beat Benilde game one which they were #8, Jefferson #20, as well as Hopkins #13. Again these are rankings only by coaches who have not seen all the teams. All that matters is playoff time and good luck to all as there have been some great games this year.

Good point, Mav, I was looking at current rankings only, but there's still a long way to go, as we all know.

When was the last time that Roseville wasn't ranked somewhere in the Top 20? I bet they will be next week!

Or as the HM girls are most certainly saying, the late February wins over the November ones. In high school sports rankings mean nothing. Every team gets their chance to be the best at the end. Any rankings along the way are just for fun.

Well stated, but they do give us fodder for discussion and some sections use computer rankings as guidelines for seeding.

A team that is 0-10 is the 15th best team in Class A at this point in the season?

Either all of the coaches completing the rankings are super, super knowledgeable about every team in Class A or, even though I know this is the remotest of possibilities, they're in large part going through the motions once they get past #5.

Pretty much throws out any credibility the Class A rankings would have from LPH. Class A should probably just rank a top ten and welcome to the NWSC for Grace, Looks like they have only played one Class A school though.

See the pre-season vs. current Class A rankings . . . almost no change.

Interesting that MG is stealing a few first place votes from EP despite EP still undefeated (as is MG). EP has more ties than MG (3 to 1 margin), so maybe that's swaying a few voters.
