Post-high school fiscal self-sufficiency is something to laud in every situation. And if it is the case that this was a kid-driven goal that required lots of lawn mowing and personal penny-pinching, the story gets even better.

Edina isn't the only place in Minnesota where rich parents live, but there is a higher concentration of wealth there than in most other places (how many other cities need a full-time permit coordinator just to supervise tear-downs? How many other high school teams have hot tubs in their locker rooms?). It is fair to generalize, and to say that a kid playing on Edina's JG team will likely have more family resources available to them than kids on the JG roster in, say, Moorhead or Tartan. And that they also had more resources available during their youth development. (there's a valid business reason why Minnesota Made is located where it is).

So he got cut so Beaupre's kid could play--back up goalie. Sorry to say it, but I don't feel too sorry for a fringe senior who loses a spot his senior year to someone else (who in this case happens to be another senior). To those who bemoan seniors losing their dream because they are cut in favor of more talented underclassmen, it was junior starter Willy Benjamin, not senior back up Conner Beaupre who pushed him out. Benjamin took Edina to two state tournaments and a state title. Meanwhile, the political pick of Beaupre hardly embarrassed himself. He was 6-0 with a 1.14 ga and a 93.48 save %. He obviously played the easier games that back ups play, but there's nothing to suggest that he didn't prove himself as a solid senior back up.

The key to the story is that it isn't about getting cut. It's about enjoying the game and making the most of what life deals you. Fringe players will always be in danger of being cut, and it looks like this kid benefitted by playing more games in junior gold than six games as a senior back up. The point is that he accepted what happened and made the most of it and now is playing D1. That's a true success story. Cutting younger better players to allow less skilled seniors fulfill their dream is what makes mediocre programs. And the reason it's a dream is that it isn't guaranteed. This kid will be far better prepared for success in life because of having to overcome a setback than had he been given a spot as an entitlement. This kid is a role model to every kid who faces a senior year without a spot on the varsity. He didn't let it stop him and that's awesome.

You are completely uninformed. Nobody cares if you feel sorry for the kid or not - clearly he doesn't need your sympathy. The facts are a fringe senior, whose dad was a coach, was taken over another fringe (your words) senior who was a better player. That's the key - he didn't deserve the spot because he was a senior, he deserved it because HE WAS BETTER. In fact, both goalies at junior gold that year were better than the backup at varsity. Likely your kid never got cut as a senior since you have no sympathy.

Now I'm confused. Didn't someone post earlier that every senior got cut that year? If there was a senior goalie, then it doesn't sound like all the seniors got cut. What else was posted that is inaccurate?

Every senior was cut besides the returning junior captain and the goaltender Beaupre. Many had Beaupre behind the two junior gold kids in the depth chart.
