Walser Tournament
Championship
Maple Grove 0, Breck 3
Three stories from the championship game that are obvious to me, just from reading the boxscore:
1. Breck's Sydney Breza scoring all three goals in the game, for a pure hat trick.
2. The same Sydney Breza, who took the only penalty called in the game, which was a 5 minute major plus a 10 minute misconduct in the 1st Period. But Maple Gove was unable to score on the extended power play...
3. Breck's Sydney Scobee, who stopped all 40 Maple Grove shots for the shutout championship win.
Breck winning the Walser Invitational Championship was a major upset, at least according to our "expert" panel. Amazingly, they never allowed a goal in the tournament, shutting out three Class AA teams: Grand Rapids/Greenway 2-0, Lakeville South 5-0 and finally Maple Grove 3-0. Nobody here predicted they would go all the way and win it, so congrats to the Mustangs for proving us all wrong.

2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown
Championship
Chaska/Chanhassen3, Minnetonka 2
Mollie Wise's second goal of the game, with 4:22 remaining, led 10AA ranked Chaska/Chanhassen to an upset 3-2 win over 3AA Minnetonka in the Championship game of the 2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown tournament. Lydia Passolt assisted on both of Wise's goals, and Bailey Jackson stopped 30 of the 32 shots that Minnetonka got on net.
No surprise here as nearly everyone (19/21) had Tonka winning this tournament...but they didn't. The only two who didn't predict a Tonka championship had Wayzata winning it, so again no points awarded in the final of this tourney. You would think SOMEONE would go against the grain in at least one of these tourneys...Such a strategy might have proven very successful this year...

2015 Mid-Winter Border Battle
Championship
White Bear Lake 1, Blaine 7
Paige Beebe scored two goals and two assists to lead host Blaine to a repeat championship in their 4th annual 2015 'Mid-Winter Border Battle' tournament. The Bengals dominated and outshot the Bears by a 34-13 margin.
This time our entire panel got it right: 3 points all around!
So, heading into the Kaposia Tourney, Knight7 maintains his 4 point lead. Looks like it will take some luck - i.e. a string of perfect scores - in the Kaposia to catch him.
1. Knight7 - 23

Hopefully someone on the forum was at the game, because I can guarantee you this box score is wrong.
A player can't get a 5/10 misconduct in the 1st period and score 3 goals later in the game....

Only one game being reported as a final so far from South St. Paul:
Hill-Murray 5, Bloomington Jefferson 0
Kenzie Prater, a senior defenseman who will be attending Quinnipiac next year, led the Pioneers with two goals. Freshman Ava Bailey, who has alternated in goal all season with senior Mari Johnson, needed to make just 7 saves for her third shutout of the season.
As might be expected everyone had the Pioneers winning. hockeybozo, easthockeydad and hockeyfan87 also called the 5-0 score and pick up the extra point.

It looks like the 15 min penalty as at 2:43 into the first period, that would mean the player would be out at the first whistle less than a minute into the second period. Looks like all the scoring happened after that. A misconduct does not result in a game misconduct.MNHockeyFan wrote:Excellent point, nu2hockey. Very astute, u12dad. I guess if the referee had called it a game misconduct the box score would indicate that. Instead it was a check from behind (which often does result in a game misconduct) plus an unsportsmanlike, so she had to sit in the box for 5 + 10. In any case it appears that when if finally expired she was 'pretty fired up', as she came back and scored the only three goals of the game! Now that's something you don't see very often!u12dad wrote:It looks like the 15 min penalty as at 2:43 into the first period, that would mean the player would be out at the first whistle less than a minute into the second period. Late reporting score from Woog Arena:
Kaposia - Lower Bracket Quarterfinal
Hibbing/Chisholm 1, South St. Paul 3
Abigail Felton had a hand in all three Packers' goals, scoring twice and assisting on the third. Mackenna Emery had first assists on both of Felton's goals. The Jackets had a 34-27 edge in shots on goal, but could only get one past SSP's Kaity McKenzie, who finished with 33 saves.
A slight upset according to our sometimes-expert panel, with only a third (7 of 21) predicting a Packers' win. There were no perfect score predictions.
Still waiting on the result of the earliest Kaposia game today between Mounds View and Blake. If it's not reported on before 2016 begins, look for an updated Leaderboard tomorrow.

From Minnesota-Scores.net, so game stats not yet available:
Kaposia - Upper Bracket Quarterfinal
Mounds View 2, Blake 5
Everyone went with No. 1A Blake, and there were three savvy prognosticators who also knew what the score was going to be: mnhockey3535, THEBUCKSTOPSHERE and READYtoPLAY.
With the completion of Thursday’s quarterfinals, Knight7 has maintained what looks to be a commanding four point lead:
1. Knight7 - 27
2. rascalbrock - 23

Hey folks just returned from the Gopher game and see that the Hub is showing the Blake/Hill-Murray game as a 2-2 tie? I assume that's the way it will go down in the record books, but for tournament purposes (and our contest here as well) one team needs to be declared the "winner" that advances to the final, even it came as a result of a second overtime goal, or a shootout. It would then be a 3-2 game for scoring purposes here.
So, which team advances to the final by a score of 3-2?
Also, does anyone know the result of the Elk River/Zimmerman vs. South St. Paul game?

Everyone had Elk River/Zimmerman advancing to the final, so two points all around. However only two (mnhockey3535 and puckdreams) had Blake advancing, and that result put mnhockey3535 in a very good position heading into tomorrow's championship game, as this contest could very well be decided by a tiebreaker:
1. Knight7 - 29
2. mnhockey3535 - 26

the teams played 2 OT's, with the second OT being 3on3Sparlimb wrote:I see a tweet saying HM didn't score in shootout, so Blake moved on to championship.
First blemish for HM on the season.
IN the shootout,Blake scored twice and HM scored once.
It was one heck of a game to watch, and the two teams played hard.
Final note, the crowd kept growing, and by the end was very large with most of the available standing room shoulder to shoulder, even the upstairs where the new addition extends above the ice. It was great that the kids on both teams got to experience that setting.
Sounds like it was a great game.nu2hockey wrote:the teams played 2 OT's, with the second OT being 3on3Sparlimb wrote:I see a tweet saying HM didn't score in shootout, so Blake moved on to championship.

These are probably the top two teams in the state. It's too bad they won't meet in the post-season to crown one champion. With only 116 teams in the state, one post-season tournament probably would suffice at this point and be more satisfying.

21st Annual Kaposia Classic Invitational - Championship Game
Blake 4, Elk River/Zimmerman 0
Carly Bullock's pure hat trick led Blake to the 21st annual Kaposia championship at Wakota Arena. Izzy Daniel also scored for the Bears and Sara McClanahan had two assists. Blake made the most of their 21 shots, while Anna Kruesel was perfect in net, stopping all 17 that the Elks put on net.
In our contest Knight7 held on to take the Tournament Prognosticator Trophy with 29 points. It did come down to the final game, as mnhockey3535 would have tied Knight7's point total and then won on a tiebreaker had the Elks prevailed...he correctly had Hill-Murray finishing in 3rd Place. But with Blake's relatively easy victory in the final, the trophy goes to Knight7. Congratulations!
Here's the final standings, which are unchanged from yesterday as nobody predicted Blake would win!
