Is this the best tourney ever?

Post by kpryan88 » Fri Mar 10, 2017 11:31 pm

I've been watching the tourney since the late 80's and my dad started taking me to the tourney in 1989 (the first game I remember attending was the title game, Jefferson vs JM. I was cheering for JM all the way). I was there for the last single class championship in 1991; I was there in 1996 until 2 am and when I haven't flown back to attend the tourney, I've watched every year from my living room in Seattle since I moved out here. I'm sure there are others who remember many more tournaments than me but in my best recollection, I don't remember another tourney with as many competitive games and a field as open as this one. I don't typically watch the single A games, but even those games have been extremely competitive. In a year where it was expected that Hermantown would run away with the title and they have been taken to OT twice! I really wish this was one of the years I was able to fly back for the tourney, it would have been worth every penny!

I think it might be.

I'm also glad the Injuns didnt waste their big 7AA wins. I feel they owed it to the section to play well in St. Paul. They didn't disappoint.

In class A there is no question. This year rewrote the book. The first day in A is usually a joke. This is unquestionably the best year ever.

For AA, not a chance. I hope the final is a great one though!

No the '85 and '86 tournaments were by far the best no questions asked

'77 was special

Burnsville fan? :) Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to really remember those years. I remember watching the championship game in 1986 but that's about it. Gorg was solid in nets for both of those tourneys.

Between the consistent quality of the games and the all-North final, I'm certainly thrilled. And despite some bitterness that will linger over the press pass fiasco, I've really had a ton of fun being in the stands for this one and just getting to meet people and drink it all in. Class A has reached a whole new level of enjoyment, even if tomorrow does wind up being a laugher, and AA has delivered time and again. Curious to see how we'll cap it off...

Oh, and hockey59: great burn on Tony by the elevators there at the end of the night. :)

Tom Dennis was in the nets in '86

The braves won big school football in '85 and hockey in '86, nobody else has won those 2 titles in the same school year

Cool, I didn't know that. I knew Gorg won against Hill once, was he in net in '83 or was 85 the only year he played in the championship?

It would need a good Saturday to top some of my favorites.

1995- The year Spehar and East burst onto the scene derailing the Jefferson dynasty on Thursday, steam rolling Edina Friday night and winning the all north Final on Saturday. Also a classic North-South semifinal with Matt Cullen scoring the winner in 2OT to beat Rochester Mayo. I'Falls also had a fun run to the class A title.

2001- I think Greenway played in 3 OT games and Moorhead played in 2 before running out of gas in the championship. Fun tourney for people who like cheering for the northern schools.

'83 you say Elliott....

Reggie and the Miracles shut out Edina in QF
Hill wins 28 straight. I can still hear that chant going off in the old Civic Center

Best A tournament by far, all the championship bracket games have been very good and intriguing.

I don't think it is top 5 in terms of AA/single class. Just like a great novel you need the antagonist; Eden Prairie with Mittlestadt certainly wasn't that.....You need the team that whole arena cheers against.

Agree, agree, agree. The class A has been unreal. Yesterday was great. Hope MAML can add to it today.

AA has been solid but needs an epic game tonight to make the it truely memorable.

Good to meet you and Danny last night, but the highlight for me was sitting next to boblee during the intense third period of last night's game and enjoying the GR fans and boblee's celebration as the buzzer sounded.

It may not be 'best ever' but last night's EP-GR game was very, very good, like watching two elite heavyweight boxers go at it for 15 rounds. One of the better semifinal games I've seen.

Oh, and hanging out at the Liffey with Neutron and Sparlimb while Hill-Murray went down was a highlight too. Maybe Hill lost 'cause their good luck charm had left the building?

Class A was most entertaining I've seen in a long time. Class AA was fun also. What I didn't like this year was 2 different sessions, 2 different locations I had 2 gabbing ladies behind me talking about everything but hockey. Please be courteous to others around you trying to enjoy hockey and don't care about your personal relationships, gossip and home lives. Thanks!
