Forum NCAA Tournament Pick'Em 2017

Post by karl(east) »

As has become the norm, we'll hold an NCAA Tourney pick'em on here. (Thanks for the nudge, MNHockeyFan.) As always, this is my annual chance to prove that any knowledge I may have on HS hockey does not transfer to college.

My excuse should I do poorly in this year's pick'em contest:

"As evidence, four of the past six N.C.A.A. champions were first-time winners. Only half of the 16-team field of last year’s N.C.A.A. tournament returned for this year’s tournament, and no conference tournament champion repeated in 2017. More than half of all Division I teams (34) have reached the N.C.A.A. tournament in the last five years."

The last time all #1 seeds won in the first round was 2005.

Only one perfect board after the first day of games.

Hard to believe only 2 of 23 picked Air Force to beat Western Michigan. #3 seed over a #2. North Dakota, as a #3 seed, was a surprise to most of the field as well.

Update with the Frozen Four field now set:

Still a half-dozen or so guys here still in the running. Looks like it'll come down to whether UMD or Denver wins it all, with the group pretty evenly split on these two. If one of these is crowned it's likely that the "total goals" tiebreaker will decide it.

HOWEVER, should Harvard manage to win two and claim the championship, "TheMNhockey1" would appear to be your winner.

AND, if underdog and unseeded Notre Dame is the one, all bets are off.

P.S. In total across the country there were 7,869 total entrants, yet going into the Frozen Four there are only 3 who have correctly picked all the winners in the four regionals. Not ALL luck, but it's right up there with some of the lottery game odds.

No shortage of goals either. By my count, there have been 78 goals so far in the tournament with three games to go. Teams combining for 6.5 goals on average.

I agree with your math! I guessed 88 total, so with 3 games to go it's highly unlikely the teams will combine for just 10.

Big congrats to bardown27 who takes this year's pick'em contest! His point total of 28 topped zooomx's 27 by a single point. Had they tied bardown27 would have won the total goal tiebreaker, as his guess of 92 was remarkably just one off the tourney's actual goal total of 93.

Great job all around! :)

P.S. Nationally, out of 7,869 total entries, there was just one - "alexgallose" - who correctly picked all the winners in this year's tournament. I hope he also bought a lottery ticket today...

I missed the UMD-Harvard semifinal. If Harvard would have won (hit two posts in the closing seconds! :() I would have come out on top...

Oh well, it was sure fun playing.

Nice win bardown27! I thought UMD was going to send that national championship to OT the way they were playing down the stretch. Alas, my chances of winning the group bracket challenge in my debut were dashed as the clock struck zero. It was fun. This was one of the better NCAA tourneys I've seen in a while. A handful of games went to OT.

Congrats to bardown. I managed to put together a remarkably bad score despite getting the two finalists right.
