Re: 2017-2018 Roseau Rams Boys Hockey Schedule

Tough schedule for the Rams this winter. What kind of team on paper we looking at for Roseau varsity hockey this upcoming season?

Agree , weaker than normal. But interesting.

New coach wanting to build momentum and morale into the playoffs?

Also, give the Skips credit for scheduling some emerging programs with strong momentum of their own. Some people believe the Chaska Hawks will be a 2AA contender in 2018-19 if no early departs.

schedule

Post by blueblood » Wed Aug 23, 2017 10:42 pm

Food for thought:

1) Skipper schedule was complete prior to the coaching change

2) Teams not on Tonka schedule from last year: Grand Rapids, Maple Grove and Hopkins (only playing Lake teams 1x this season)

3) Teams added this year: St. Louis Park, Chaska and Blake

4) Six games against Pre-season Top 5: Edina (3), East, Moorhead and STA. Who else has that for 1/4 of their regular season games?

5) Four additional games against pre-season Top 10: Ep (2) and Wayzata (2)

6) Six more games against other team likely in preseason top 20: Lakeville North, Prior Lake, Duluth Marshall, Jefferson, Blaine and Centennial or Hill

7) Game vs. Hermantown

That comes out to 17 games against top teams. With Rapids down this year, not as big a drop as you may think. Adding Chaska makes since due to section 2AA implications. Park and Blake are rising AA programs. Only real loss on schedule is MG.

Buffalo Bison schedule

2/13/2018 7:00PM Hopkins Hopkins Pavilion
2/15/2018 7:00PM St. Louis Park St. Louis Park Recreation Center

The season efinitely starts out with a bang, with two top-flight opponents right out the gate. As always, the Mississippi 8 schedule is a bit of a constraint, and Buffalo tends to overcompensate by taking on a few metro teams that are well above their talent level. But they should be on a bit of a roll entering the 8AA playoffs, as the back half of the schedule is pretty soft. We’ll see if the young talent and strong goaltending will produce results, but the Bison may still be a year or two away (and Moorhead is always looming as the 800 lb gorilla in the section.)

The two tournaments are the Tiger Turkey Classic (or something like that) and the Schwan Cup Silver Division. I’m not quite sure what the point of the Marshall trip is, unless they really want to see the fancy new arena or expose the kids to country hick life (my parents grew up on farms near Marshall, so I feel entitled to make that joke).

The rest of the schedule is pretty standard fare, with a handful of higher end A and AA opponents mixed in with the IMAC and sectional foes. The Moorhead and Wayzata contests may be ugly losses. The game against Hudson, the defending Wisconsin champs, is interesting from a cross-border comparison standpoint.

Two of the measuring stick games come early in the season, against Orono and Cathedral. Breck has essentially declared that they are getting out of the “hockey business” in terms of preferential admission and financial aid treatment for hockey players. So Breck probably only has a few years left as a state title contender, and Orono is the likely successor to the 2A crown. We’ll see early on if the Mustangs have the horses (pardon the pun) to return to state and make some noise.

It always bothers the heck out of me when posters (or more accurately, posers) act like they have knowledge of a situation when they don't. So tell us when, how or who essentially declared Breck is "getting out of the hockey business". You won't because you can't. It isn't true.

OK, first of all settle down and take a deep breath. If you are so concerned about my credibility, I will say that I am a Breck alumnus with familial connections to the school administration and played at Breck with one of the previous assistants. So it isn’t like I’m just spouting off random speculation with no basis in reality. Further, if you listen to the summer YHH podcast from last month, Tony Scott made essentially the exact same statement that I did regarding Breck. I think it is pretty common knowledge at this point that Breck is deemphasizing their hockey program, while Blake is putting serious investment into theirs.

If you don’t believe me, that is fine. The results over the next few years will show the direction of the Breck program. I sincerely hope they remain relevant and wish them well, but I don’t believe that the program will stay at the same lofty level.

Just as I thought. You are just spouting BS you heard somewhere. Surpising given your claim of connections to the program. You should know better. Don't echo things you know nothing about. It makes you look stupid.

There have been some references within this thread (e.g. 'Tonka Schedule) to the Schwan's Cup Tournament in December and teams' first-round opponents. Are those brackets / pairings posted somewhere?

I was wondering the same thing. I searched all over the internet, starting of course with the tournament website, but was unable to find a full list of the participants for each division. A bit strange since MN Hockey Hub had an announcement for the 2016 matchups back in March of 2016. And I actually did of educated guesswork myself with the two schedules I posted (Breck and Buffalo) that they would be in the Silver Division, since both played in Silver last year. Hopefully someone will have more insight or the full roster of teams will be released soon.

Blake Bears Schedule

02-13-18 7:30PM Rochester Lourdes Blake Ice Arena
02-16-18 7:00PM Minnetonka Minnetonka H.S.

This is a schedule I was really curious to see, given Blake’s move up to the AA ranks. Interestingly, the Bears are playing more games against teams from their previous section than within the new section (see breakdown below). Obviously part of this is due to Blake’s conference affiliation, but it also seems like scheduling is a challenging part of opting up. While Blake is unlikely to be a factor in 6AA this year, not having games against Benilde, Edina, Hopkins, and the Robbinsdale team will make the seeding process less than ideal.

6AA opponents: Holy Angels, CDH, Wayzata, St. Louis Park, and possibly Minnehaha Academy x2 (at least as currently listed)

2A opponents: Minneapolis, Orono, Breck x2, Providence x2, and Delano

The two tournaments are Wayzata’s own Turkey Trot, which features the same four teams from the past few years, and the Hilltopper Classic. The lineup for the latter is Anoka, Bemidji, Brainerd, Cloquet, Hermantown, Roseville, and obviously Duluth Marshall and Wayzata.

According to Holy Family's schedule they will play Greenway January 5. It does make sense in that Holy Family plays Rapids the next night. They could easily reschedule the Eveleth game. Got to check that out. If true, I'll say this about Clafton, he's not afraid to play anybody. This is a far cry from when Greenway was playing Bagley, Ely, Hallock and Walker.
