In a week after Edina has lost and tied, and there is one remaining undefeated team in the state, these are your models rankings? Perhaps there’s a point in time after which a model outputs such obviously insensible results it’s worth questioning whether the model has any value.

Careful now, remember the models really don't care when the losses and ties occur. Most teams are around the 15 game count.. of the 3 (krach,lsqrank and qrf)more common "formula" rankings, i feel this is the time of year they tend to be more reliable ...now is the time where you can see how each "formula" values different data to rank the teams. I am wondering what you see as "insensible" here. All of us have ideas how the teams should rank and so I don't think a consensus would be reached if we tried.

NU2HOCKEY is correct. The LSQRank solution does not process W-L-T records, only score differentials related to sub-networks and combined networks of who plays who, ie. the game results by all teams in the combined ND-MN-WI network affects top to bottom depending depend the "geometry" of the game connection or linkage that any game creates.

The other important piece of information that J4241 is overlooking is the Standard Deviation values (ie. the Sxx column) which qualifies the precision of the rating values. All rating systems have these associated (Std Dev) values, but rarely do the publishes elect to show them to the detriment of their rating profile. The Sxx for both Blake and Edina are roughly 0.9 of a point (or goal). As more games are played, the magnitude of the Sxx values will become smaller, and by the end of the regular season, they are ~0.1 points.

Quoting back at me what your model does, when I told you I thought your model produces bad results, is non-responsive.

For grins, I went back and used both KRACH and LSQ for the tourney contest, and LSQ did out perform KRACH - it got 16 winners right versus 14 - well below the midpoint of correct games by those of us who know something about hockey.

For what it's worth, the hockey point I'd make to you is that elevating score differential over wins and losses is absolutely silly, especially when you do it to the point of turning a tie into a loss, or a win into a tie or loss. Coaches coach to win, players play to win, not to have the largest score differential (except apparently Warroad).

Blake is clearly the number 1 team (at least until any new info on January 20), and a ranking system that doesn't get that is not worth anything.

J4241, You missed my point about the associated precision of each individual rating score. The rating profile only gives you a list of numbers based on its numerical method, which is neither right nor wrong.With that said, the least squares math makes the best fit of the entire body of work (all games), but more importantly, it also gives you sigmas that describe the plus or minus to what the ranking scores represent, for example:

as of Jan 01, 2018

Edina = 1000.0000 +/- 0.923
Blake = 999.6263 +/- 0.912
.
.
EdenPrairie = 996.9053 +/- 0.935

If you interpret the information that I provided, the magnitude of the difference between Edina and Blake is ~0.37 +/- 0.9

Therefore, based on the current data to date, using the LSQR Jan 01 profile,
the 95% Confidence Interval of a neutral site game between these two teams would be approximately

[ 0.37 - (1.645*0.9) . to . 0.37 + (1.645*0.9)]

reducing

[ -1.11 .to. 1.85 ] notice that the left endpoint is a negative number so that the confidence interval includes the value of zero. The correct interpretation is that there is no clear-cut advantage to either team between these two teams, ie. the most probably game outcome is a tie game.

Back to your other concern, the Least Squares solution doesn't turn a tie into a loss or win or vice versa, if one uses only raw game scores. As new research this season, we decided to correct the raw scores for non-even strength goals for specifically the college mens games to research whether adjusting a corrected score differential yielded a more precise rating profile. Where in the college game, correcting power play goals are very crucial, for high school girls game they are less important in the overall scheme of things considering the amount of extra work required to look at and dissect each game log to apply the corrections. Other twists to the raw game scores that we apply is that we correct for ENG's , PSG's and make a correction for running time games based on the rate of scoring prior to invoking RT protocol. The idea behind correcting raw scores for RT is that you want to normalize each contest to a full stop-time (normal) game situation.

Which brings me to my question. I consistently think the northern teams are ranked slightly higher than they should be due to their lopsided victories of easier teams through their schedules.. The question is -

KRACH I think does an excellent job... but. Does the KRACH ranking put to much emphasis on score differential? If so is there a biased present in the formula when extrem casses like Warroad, and other northern teams play such high scoring/easy games (running the score up) on a consistent basis that it starts to reflect in a higher ranking as the year progresses...a false positive so to speak?

Roseau is ranked in Class AA (I believe) but to your question/point...

KRACH doesn't care if you win 100 to zip or 1-0 in OT. KRACH doesn't look at score at all - just W/L/T and against which teams you achieve these results.

Other approaches weight score in their calculations but should cap it at 6 goal differential so those runaway scores can't skew the equations/ratings/algorithms and many do this cap for the reasons you are asking. More on KRACH: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/ratings/krach.php

Looking at strength of schedule: Proctor/Hermantown has the 2nd hardest schedule in Class A. Alexandria is 3rd, and Warroad 6th. I think most of the stronger northern teams do a pretty good job finding as challenging of a schedule as they can. Yes, there are a few lopsided affairs, but most know that we must schedule tougher in order to compete at state.

I agree.

Breck is showing how strong SOS in Class A is leading to a top ranking. They have the #1 overall SOS in either class and with a sub-.500 record are sitting atop the KRACH class A rankings as of this AM as a result.
