Section 8 5A

Some have told me that it will come down between Brainerd and Bemidji.
Bemidji has a good QB returning and a phenom of an athlete at WR and DB plus a contingent of other O and D weapons.
I am not sold on their O & D lines, yet.

Brainerd has a strong program and always puts a quality product on the field.

Moorhead lost some weapons but again a big school and lots of bodies.

Ditto for Alexandria.

Sartell will likely be at the tail end but should show improvement from last year's young squad.

In 7 5A it has to be Andover.

Section 8 5A started slow.
Bemidji wins.
Brainerd, Moorhead, Alexandria and Sartell all lose in the first week.
Brainerd, Moorhead and Alex had tough opponents.

Good idea Elliott on starting a high school football message! I'd guess this will have some interest.

Bemidji has Big Lake at home Friday (9/7).
The Jacks gave eth game away last year in Big Lake.

I see Bemidji by 14 points in this one.

Owatonna continues to roll.
Caledonia has a top 5 winning streak in the nation, section 1AA looks to be very competitive though as 2 of the 1AA teams knocked off 2 1AAAA teams in week one.

Owatonna is a football machine.

Elk River seems to have developed a strong program.

Andover is also proving to have the keys to a good program.

Bemidji went to Eden Prairie about 8 years ago and copied their youth program. It is starting to pay off at the high school level now.

I have dealt with Mike Grant numerous times......picking up on what he does can't hurt. He rubs some people the wrong way and I get that. He runs a good program at EP, obviously Eden Prairie has certain advantages like a huge enrollment, low F/R lunch numbers, etc. But he still beats similar schools. His teams do not beat themselves.

The Owatonna coach is the son of a former John Marshall coach, Rochester did not hire him so he ended up at Owatonna. By and large he runs the same offense they have run at Owatonna for 50 years. He adapts it to fit his kids but the offense is nothing no one has ever seen, they just run basically the same 5 plays ( to left and right makes it 10) but they run it extremely well.

If you back to the 60's and earlier the Minneapolis paper put on a "Championship" game between the public school champion voted on as there were no playoffs and the top Catholic school team. Last year I would have liked to see EP play Owatonna.

Awesome move Elliot, wish we had a program in Rapids. Indian, err Thunderhawk football is horrible.
You one lucky man!

Oldtimer--
Why is Rapids football not very good? With them being a bigger school in 4A I would think they would have more numbers. Is it the better athletes just play hockey? Hermantown, I don't believe, have hockey kids out for the team. Cloquet doesn't have hockey players.

Just curious

Hermantown has a couple...
Elliott Peterson who is a 3 year hockey player is a captain on the football team and starts at running back and linebacker.

Wrong just Peterson.
But he scored both touchdowns in Friday night win, so big contribution from hockey.

Rocketwrister, Rapids has a really good Jaycee youth program but they lose a sizable portion of their stud athletes in football during 7,8 and 9th grade years. Have heard its just really unorganized at this level and kids move on to other interests. The lack of athletes at Varsity level is significant. New head coach has lots of enthusiasm so hopefully he takes to learning from the Bemidji model.

Caledonia continues to roll, 44 straight. Week 8 has Caledonia traveling to St Charles, :x a out of 3 to be state champ.

Owatonna has yet to be challenged.

FWIW the Big10 sucks

In section 7 4A I see Hermantown narrowly beat Denfeld. North Branch lost to Duluth East. Cloquet rolled Hibbing. Rapids beat Proctor.

Hermantown and Cloquet both without a loss.

Caledonia wins again, their under varsity teams are now playing the Rochester schools, with about 100,000 less in population. The last varsity loss was almost 4 years ago.

Caledonia is a power. But not in AAAAAA so not a lot of people know of them outside of Houston County.

Lots of good football down in southeastern MN.

Two Houston County teams won state titles last year, just South of Houston County is Allamakee County in Iowa who also had a state champ in Waukon.

Caledonia wins again, 45 straight, out scoring their opponents 186-13 this season, they travel to Chatfield next Friday in what could be their toughest opponent this entire year.

QRF sucks.......really #5Cannon Falls just beat #1 Breck handily. So did #4 Waseca over a #1, West beat a higher seed for the umpteenth straight year.

It really, really sucks.....Lee has a much better system.

QRF does an okay job where the teams play a similar schedule.
Otherwise you do not have enough games and do not have enough common opponents AND they give credit for playing up and detract when playing down a level. In MN football that does not mean much.

The last few years Duluth East has been given a 4th seed or so only to get blown out in the first game.
They play no 5A schools during the year but end up with a decent record with meaningless wins.

A 2-6 Cannon Falls team just won a section title (easily) as a #6 seed. They were seeded behind two Minneapolis City Conference teams and two top 7 AP Teams....Waseca just won title easily as a #4 seed. Lee has a much better system.

Playing a tough schedule means something, that is why Rochester Century can put up 20 wins and be a #3 seed under a .500 Lakeville team.

QFF needs work!

Bemidji wins again!

I hope they beat the sandbagging Cadets, of course then they get put in running time by the Owatonna Indians....err Huskies.

Tough road the rest of the way for the Lumberjacks.
But one day at a time.
We will see how practice goes this week.

Their high school coaches work extremely hard.
The leaders of the youth (3 4 5 grade) are non-parents and went and adopted Eden Prairie methods (with approval) and make it fun and developmental for the young ones and their parents.
And off course, success breeds success.

And the players are committed all year to getting bigger, stronger, faster and smarter.
