In all seriousness, I think a part of it is we rarely know what Holy Family’s roster will look like and how they’ll gel with all of the summer recruits each year (except for that summer they tweeted out all the college commitment like “Welcome To The Family” posts and then had to delete them...). Most pundits can only look at who teams lose and how many stay, and the returning production. Holy Family lost a lot of production from last year. We know about a great goalie recruit and a solid forward, but otherwise we’re just guessing. BSM lost less, kept a very good freshman goalie from last year, and gained several dynamic players. HF might have gained more than we know and could have great players coming up from jv, but we don’t know that, and BSM could as well. Doesn’t really matter anyhow, as they’re in different sections and conferences.

You play Litchfield, Mound, Hutchinson, Delano and Waconia some of them twice. That is why.

As I essentially said later in my post... but yes. That’s why many pre-season predictions end up being incorrect.

With HF a member of the Wright County Conference, the opportunity for a 20 win season will always be a possibility.

As compared to the other Class AA teams on the list, HF has not won a Class AA state title.
- CDH, HM, BSM & AHA have all in the last 13 years

As compared to other Class A teams on the list, HF did not win a Class A state title when they played at that level.
- Breck, STA & TG did

As compared to all privates listed, HF has not won a section title:
All of the above listed teams, plus SCC have

That leaves HF and Blake.

True, but I've been reading for years about how your the greatest private school in the state and yet I never see you at the X. Why is that? You have had some nice squads, but respect is earned. Keep winning. Make state. Do something once you get there.

1. St Thomas- some nice senior forwards
2. Benilde- really deep, lots of top young players, great D core and outstanding goaltending
3. CDH- top line will be really good
4. Hill Murray- young but talented
5. Blake- nice top line but depth lacking. Goalie can be really good but has had a average fall season
6. Holy Family- Senior transfer goalie saves the season, top line should be good, depth lacking and D core average
7. Cathedral- Big names but have not seen jump in progression, should dominate class A teams
8. Totino Grace- Couple nice transfers will help but still a rebuild
9. Holy Angels- Not deep at all, have better talent than previous seasons
10. Breck- down grades schedule will help but talent level way dow

Apologies for dragging the discussion back to a couple of the less relevant teams on the list, but I just wanted to add a few comments regarding Breck and Torino Grace.

Breck is in a situation where the record will look better than last year due to the more manageable schedule, but they will actually have even less talent on the roster. The Mustangs were senior heavy last year, and graduated a significant number of their better players. Of the six double-digit scorers, four graduated, as did both goaltenders (neither had great stats, but one anchored Breck's state tournament run two years earlier). There were a few solid freshmen on last year's team, but not nearly enough reinforcements coming up from the younger classes to make up for the departing seniors. Looking at the schedule, most of the dominant AA opposition is gone, though plenty of landmines still remain, including Cathedral, Mahtomedi, Blake, Hudson, and Fargo Davies. I would estimate the over/under for wins in the 13.5 range.

With regard to TG, I know others are more familiar with the incoming transfer situation, but I wanted to point out that they had two players (a forward and goalie) participate in the Select 15 development camp this summer in Buffalo, so there are a few solid building blocks from which to start already in place. They should definitely take a decent step forward from last year, even if there is little chance of challenging Mahtomedi for the section title.

In comparison to most private schools, that is right away. Though, perhaps they should have stayed in A and won a couple titles with Gersich and co.!

Thanks for the clarification. I saw the goalie listed as being from TG on the Minnesota hockey website, and a different school on the USA hockey rosters, and I wasn’t sure which one was accurate. USA hockey scrubs their website so quickly that the rosters are no longer listed. Do you recall where he transferred, out of curiosity?

ETA: TG has quite the ambitious scrimmage schedule, with matchups against Cathedral, Eden Prairie, and Hermantown. Apparently they want to test themselves right off the bat. (And they have nonconference games against EGF and HT during the season.)

No - he didn't like the school. But doesn't make a lot of sense to play Varsity as a 9th grader - then go somewhere where you aren't going to play. Not sure why you wouldn't look at somewhere to play.

No - he didn't like the school. But doesn't make a lot of sense to play Varsity as a 9th grader - then go somewhere where you aren't going to play. Not sure why you wouldn't look at somewhere to play.

Hockey isn't everything in these kids lives. An education should come first. Just because you might not play on a varsity team, doesn't mean that you can't get a good education that could set you up better for college. Some schools may not offer any CITS or PSEO courses, and I'm not sure if TG or Andover do or don't, but that is something to be considered.

I am not too versed on this individual story, but this is what just came to my mind initially. I don't know where this kid is from or anything else about the kid, but this was just my first thoughts.
