I'm not sure if this is the right spot for it, but YHH just did a podcast dedicated to girls high school hockey, including some early picks:

Worth a listen!

1. Hornet
* Defending heavyweight champion. Lost some big guns but have some help on the way via Idaho and u15. One could argue that the 2 best new HS players in Minnesota will play for Edina this year. (First 2 games of the season vs Andover and Blake could be great games or just confirm to many that Edina is far and away the deepest and best HS team in the state of hockey)

2. Bears
* Lost 2 games last year, both to Edina. Returning their leading scorer and 3 of the top Jr forwards in the state and the HEAVY favorite to win Ms Hockey. A big ? at goalie. (Edina/WBL/Wayzata the 2nd week of the season should be interesting)

3. Huskies
* YOUNG. GUNS. Lost a goalie and top scorer but lots more firepower finally old enough to play in Anoka County. (Game #1 vs Edina and game #25 vs Blake)

4. Pioneers
* Supposedly lost their top goalie to Gentry but return have a bunch of solid returners and should make another appearance at Xcel.

5/6. Troj-ippers
* 4 kids at the top 66 Camp this summer in Maine (the most of any team). Can the 3 very high end D put up a bunch of points and hold it down in the D zone?
* Not tons of individual accolades other than Wisnewski (yet) in Trojan-land but a way better than average and pretty deep team with solid goaltending. It will be a battle for 2nd place in the Lake between these two. I think the edge goes to the Trojans.

Best of the rest in no particular order:

Eagan
Brainerd
White Bear Lake
FLAKE (despite losing their goalie to boys...if she plays girls they could be somewhat of a challenge to Andover in sections)

Mustang v Warrior in final for the Class A Title at Xcel in February and Breck gets 2nd state title. I believe that the Mustang could be a top 5 team in all the land by years end. Warroad has a nice nucleus of players coming back and have heard they picked up another piece that should put the puck in the net a lot this winter.

*****MN Girls HS hockey season games are 4 weeks away from tonight! Two big games that night...NWC v St Cloud and EDINA v ANDOVER!!!
From a month ago...

1 Blake ( their roster losses are less than Edina, goalie questions)
2 Edina ( strong feeder system, goalie questions also)
3 Andover ( too high, lots of speculation until later in season)
4 Brainerd/LF ( will win a lot of games with that schedule)
5 Forest Lake ( ?, was Andover before Andover, yet high expectations haven't been met)
6 Hill-Murray ( replacing 9 players, last year's stories of hazing, harassment, and dysfunction, plus having co-head coaches this year, Too high)
7 Wayzata ( at times played well, not sure who scores for them)
8 Roseau ( probably better than people think, they seem to always be well coached)
9 Eagan ( team depended so much on one player last year, now gone)
10 Maple Grv ( lots of kids, may be a bit of a rebuild)
I wouldn't be surprised if 4 of these teams aren't in the top ten,(HM, Flake,Eagan,MG) at year's end, but, winning lots of games against weak schedule tends to keep teams rated higher than they should be..I don't see a juggernaut anywhere, but, Blake and Edina should be 2 steps ahead of everyone else...provided the goalies perform..

I understand the aim of the MSHSL is participation and not balanced competition, but they're undercutting the argument for the current girls' hockey sections with what they've done for football and the knockout tournament.

I think the MSHSL is leaving a lot of money on the table by not going to a straightforward tournament knockout format for AA. There are 65 AA teams, just move one team down (looking at you Irondale) and use the KRACH rankings to seed the teams. This year would likely lead to a final four at State of Edina, Blake, Andover, and Wayzata. I don't see a downside to that.

Probably makes too much sense to do it. You would have mostly metro teams but would have to account for travel to/from some of the northern teams, particularly Roseau - at least 5 hours from the twin cities.

I could see if it the bottom 32 go first and 16 receive a bye and the top 16 a double bye. I have no interst in seeing Edina or Hill-Murray face * fill in the blank random bottom AA team *
Be kind. Rewind.

What difference does it make? They're already rolling through their first opponent in the first round of their current sections. Enough with the double bye BS. You can thank the Big East basketball folks for that silly idea.

I think something like this could work with reseeding the teams that make the section finals. Maybe look to host a state round of 16 games for both AA and A at the D1 representatives other than UM. Bemidji/SC/Kato/UMD. Then host the State Semi's at ridder/X whatever the MSHSL needs/wants.

An opportunity for 8 more teams from AA and A to play at a college rink and have a cool "state type experience" on a weekday night. They could go the route of D1 women and make some travel modifications for Warroad to not play Lourdes in Mankato or Luverne to not play in Duluth or Bemidji. The losers would not make it to X/Ridder but would be way cooler than playing at Parade or Red Wing or Forest Lake...

If Blake loses to Edina then Andover could/should be the new #1.

UNLESS...Blake wins by a few goals and then loses to Wayzata by a few goals...

Andover could be #1 for a long time if their goaltending and D stays strong. They absolutely will score a lot of goals but could run into problems against way above average goalies (Stoterau), great D (tonka), or well balanced teams like MG or Blake during the holiday tourney or Breck right after)

What then!?! Wayzata looks STRONG so far 2 games in.

Side note...anyone see this boxscore?

Shots 58-4. Nikki Harnett...so fun to watch.
