Pick'em Week 1

Post by MNHockeyFan » Tue Jan 01, 2019 9:28 pm

A little late, but later is better than never, right? For each of the last five weeks of the regular season I thought I'd start a simplified version of past years prediction threads, so we'll get started with Week 1. Just a handful of games each week where you pick just the winners of the games listed, no scores. One point for each correct pick. And just for fun I'll include one "outlier" game each week, typically a rivalry game involving non-ranked teams.

So here we go - be sure to post by the 5:30pm puck drop for Thursday's rivalry game:

Thursday, January 3rd
Rochester Century vs. Rochester Mayo (rivalry game)
Eden Prairie vs. Wayzata

Friday, January 4th
Blake vs. Breck
Brainerd/Little Falls vs. Grand Rapids/Greenway
Alexandria vs. Sartell/Sauk Rapids

Saturday. January 5th
Breck vs. Andover
Eden Prairie vs. Minnetonka

Edit: Correcting the day for the Rochester rivalry game to tonight (Thursday) at 5:30pm.

Thanks, massalsa for pointing that out. I'm correcting my original post for the Rochester rivalry game to today (Thursday) at 5:30pm. This will change the deadline for this game for those who haven't already posted their picks. Sorry for the error and confusion!

Century beats Mayo 9-2. It appears that Makayla Pahl did not play, which probably explains the lopsided score, as Century's first 5 shots all resulted in goals.

Wayzata tops Eden Prairie 2-0 on a 22 save shutout performance by Stephanie Garvis.

Great calls by zooomx, the only one to pick Century in our first game.

For those who might have missed it the Hub has a big article on one our games here tonight, that being the matchup between Brainerd/Little Falls and Grand Rapids/Greenway. Our six member pick'em panel here strongly favors the Warriors to come out on top, with Lake South Alum being the only dissenter.

Top games: Grand Rapids/Greenway and Brainerd/Little Falls showcase two of Greater Minnesota's best

Or maybe Blind Squirrel somehow found out Pahl was not going to play?

All three of our games this evening were great matchups that seemingly could have gone either way:

Blake 3, Breck 2
The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead which they held until 3:04 of the second when Georgia Pettygrove tallied to make it a one goal game. Breck was able to hang onto their 2-1 lead as the clock wound down in the 3rd, but the Bears were able to put two past Breck's Uma Corniea in the final 3 1/2 minutes for the 3-2 comeback victory. Blake's Izzy Daniel figured heavily in the scoring with a goal and two assists.

Brainerd/LF 4, Grand Rapids/Greenway 2
After a scoreless first period the Thunderhawks got on the board just 51 seconds into the second on a power play goal by Quinn Kasell. But Cheyenne Abear tied it up just 21 seconds later to make it a 1-1 game. From that point forward Brainerd/Little Falls used their depth to outscore GR/G three to one to make it a 4-2 final. SOG were pretty close at 32-25 Warriors. Interesting that on the teams' combined 6 goals no player had more than a single point.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids 1, Alexandria 0 (OT)
It took overtime for Brooke Walters to score the game's only goal to win it for the Storm'N'Sabres in a tight, defensive battle. Their goaltender, Chloe Stockinger, stopped all 32 shots she faced for the shutout. At the other end the Cardinals' Jordan O'Kane, with a .947 save percentage, also proved tough to beat until Walters scored the overtime winner.

In our simplified pick'em scoring system we also have a tight scoring battle brewing. Here are our totals with Saturday's two games yet to play:

zooomx - 4 points
massalsa - 4 points
MNHockeyFan - 4 points

LZ94 - 3 points
goaliedad31 - 3 points
Lake South Alum - 3 points

Scores from this evening and a brief commentary:

Andover 4, Breck 3
Another nail biter, following the pattern of our Week 1 games. The two teams traded goals throughout the entire game until Andover's Gabby Krause scored the game winner on the power play 2:35 into overtime. The Huskies did outshoot the Mustangs 35-24, and had a 5-0 edge in the two and a half minute overtime period.

Minnetonka 4, Eden Prairie 0
Based on their KRACH rankings you would not expect the 8th ranked Eagles to get blanked and fall by 4 goals to the 13th ranked Skippers, so the result (and goal differential) has to considered an upset. But Tonka outshot EP by a 31-23 margin, further proving that their win was no fluke. With a goal and an assist, junior Lacey Martin - a BC commit - was the game's only multi-point scorer. Big kudos also go to their sophomore goaltender, Lacey Martin, who is a Cornell commit. Martin, who stopped all 23 shots that the Eagle put on net, helped her team to this well-earned win in the always tough Lake Conference.

The first week of our Pick'em Contest ended in a tie between zooomx and massasla, who each predicted the winner in five of our seven games. =D> Interesting that no one got both of tonight's games right, and in fact I was wrong on both of them and couldn't add to my 4 point total heading into these final two games of the week. #-o

Look for Week 2's interesting slate of games to be posted shortly! And as always we encourage all girls high school hockey fans to participate and join in the fun. \:D/

I believe Breck is is going to be a different team the next time they play Warroad (in the A chip)...they are playing a much harder schedule than Warroad and competing with a win vs Hornet and then a 1 goal game with Blake and an OT loss vs Andover.

Minnetonka 4, Eden Prairie 0

- No Maggie Nicholson for Tonka today is remarkable too.
- BTW - Lacey Martin is a F who is going to BU and Brynne Duloc is a Soph G who is heading to Cornell with Soph D Guilday.
- Cornell getting some STRONG Minn players the next 3 years with those 2 plus Daniels from Blake, Breza from SSM (both 19's) and Delianidis from Blake in 20.

The Hub shows Miss Martin to be a BC commit; is that in error?

Crazy, isn't it? I see where Forest Lake passed Edina to claim the No. 3 spot in the latest overall KRACH rankings. I've looked for what would appear to be competitive matchups to include them in our Pick'em games, but their Strength of Schedule has been a little on the weak side (No. 33 on KRACH).

Is interesting that after Edina creamed FLAKE a couple of weeks ago they are now rated higher than them. It feels to me like this system and my personal feelings/rankings align a little better than KRACH (but the loss to #53 Blaine will hurt when calculated and may drop the Hornet a bit):

http://www.minnesota-scores.net/classqr ... 0&class=-2

(F)LAKE could very well be a 1 loss team until they meet (B)LAKE on January 29th. Could potentially be a battle of two 1 loss teams but Edina, Breck, and others will be tough games for (B)LAKE before that matchup. GRG appears to be the toughest foe for (F)LAKE before that game.
